Description

“Amy Lea’s Woke Up Like This reminded me that the exciting and complicated feelings of our teenage years never truly fade away. The book perfectly captures high school nostalgia . . . It’s a feel-good story for the young and young at heart.” —Mindy KalingFor two high school seniors, it’s seventeen going on thirty—overnight—in a magical romantic comedy about growing up too fast and living in the moment.Planning the perfect prom is one last “to do” on ultra-organized Charlotte Wu’s high school bucket list. So far, so good, if not for a decorating accident that sends Charlotte crash-landing off a ladder, face-first into her obnoxiously ripped archnemesis J. T. Renner. Worse? When Charlotte wakes up, she finds herself in an unfamiliar bed at thirty years old, with her bearded fiancé, Renner, by her side.Either they’ve lost their minds or they’ve been drop-kicked into adulthood, forever trapped in the thirty-year-old bodies of their future selves. With each other as their only constant, Charlotte and Renner discover all that’s changed in the time they’ve missed. Charlotte also learns there’s more to Renner than irritating-jock charm, and that reaching the next milestone isn’t as important as what happens in between.Navigating a series of adventures and a confounding new normal, Charlotte and Renner will do whatever it takes to find a way back to seventeen. But when—and if—they do, what then? Read more

  • This is SUCH a cute read! A 17-going-on-30 YA romance that is fun, witty and sweetly romantic.
This is SUCH a cute read! A 17-going-on-30 YA romance that is fun, witty and sweetly romantic. It’s a wonderfully written ‘fluffy’ romance that had me hooked from start to finish, and I enjoyed every moment! Charlotte is a high school senior and a smart, driven perfectionist. For the entirety of high school she has been working to a plan, and she’s hitting all of her goals, except for the ones ruined by her arch-rival, J.T. Renner. Renner is everything Charlotte is not – popular, carefree and laidback, and their best friends are dating, so he’s always in her face. While Charlotte is charging ahead planning the perfect prom, Renner is constantly in her way, culminating in a decorating mishap which has her falling off a ladder directly onto her nemesis. And things take a dramatic turn when Charlotte wakes from her accident in an unfamiliar bed with Renner ride by her side, both of them now in their thirty-year old bodies, and engaged. It’s a great set up, and this story is lots of fun. The dynamic between Charlotte and Renner as 17 years olds is snarky but buzzing with hidden, mostly unwanted, attraction, and I loved both of them pretty much immediately. When they wake in the future, they are forced to work together to figure out what happened to them, and how to undo it all. In the meantime, they get to experience their adult lives and learn what happened in the intervening 13 years – learning some pretty big life lessons in the process – and they are by each other’s side through all of it, with only each other to lean on. Forced together, faking an adult relationship, and being each other’s support changes their relationship forever, but will they ever get back to their real lives? And if they do, will they remember what happened to them? And what do they do with all that they’ve learned about their future? Though this is a fun and light read, it does have some important and heartfelt themes. Both Charlotte and Renner are dealing with some drama in their lives, and I loved that even though they’re dealing with it as the teenagers they are, they also get a glimpse of the consequences of their actions in the future. It’s real and it’s relatable, and I thought it was so well written. “For some reason, I always thought adults made decisions with purpose. That they knew what they were doing all the time. But maybe adults are just like teens, bumbling around aimlessly, unsure if they’ve gotten it right.” And of course there’s a romance, and I loved the relationship between Charlotte and Renner. There’s more to it than initially seems, and despite the years of animosity between them, the forced proximity and the bizarreness of their situation draws them together, and the love story is really cleverly done. I loved this book. I loved the characters, the writing, and the way the story unfolded. It brought back memories and made me think, and left me feeling fluffy and giddy with happiness. ... show more

  • A sweet and satisfying romcom that'll leave you nostalgic and hopeful.
Star Rating: ★★★★☆ Favorite Quote: "Friendships can change. Sometimes people drift apart. That’s just life. It doesn’t make it any less painful, though.” "You fight with people you love. You ignore people you don’t care about." Overall Feel: I need to confess: 13 Going on 30 is one of my absolute favorite rom-coms. And that is 100% what I thought of when I read the synopsis and was 1000% what I expected as I started reading. But (dare I say it?) I enjoyed this more than the movie. It has all of the sweetness and innocence of a high school romance, from the friendship drama to the silly misunderstandings. And prom. Of course, prom. But what really elevated this book was how it took some of the tropes I expected then added layers and layers of depth to all of the characters involved. Thoughts on Plot: The plot is full of the types of big events you love to see. Student council and school scenes. Prom. A big party. The late night hangout. It also follows the right-when-you-think-it'll-happen-BOOM-interruption sort of unfolding story. BUT, I do think there was enough of a balance between events and the characters' thoughts that it felt like it all moved at a good pace. Thoughts on Characters: I am incredibly pleased with the characters and their relationships throughout the story. I think the most refreshing thing is that there wasn't a "bad guy" that we were all supposed to hate throughout. Amy Lea created such real, well-rounded characters that you could probably think of someone in your own life that reminded you of each one. A lot of rom-coms give you flat supporting characters but I think I enjoyed every friend and family member that contributed to the story. I also really enjoyed the budding romance between Charlotte and Renner. It felt like something easy to root for - the frenemy/competition tension was so enjoyable and it made little sweet moments even sweeter. Recommendations: I think this would be a great read for someone trying to read something nice and sweet. The language made the story flow easily and it was such a satisfying story to follow. It makes you a little nostalgic for the friends you might have drifted away from while also reminding you to be present in your moments. ... show more
