  • Close. But not cigar
I have done swatches of all 48 colors of the Winsor&Newton Studio series pencils. I have also begun two drawings of a rose on different papers, in order to assess the quality and usability of the line. Even before finishing, I have a pretty good notion of both. The pencils seem to be well made (in Vietnam), and they lay down well. They are moderately highly pigmented, and while not as buttery as Prismacolor or Luminance, they are easy to work with. They layer and blend nicely, similar to Polychromos. Now for the bad news. They are only available in sets (12, 24 & 48). Winsor&Newton says they have no plans to ever offer then open stock. That's a deal-killer right there for me. Their statement as to lightfastness is nebulous. They just say they are. Full stop. No numbers. No method given. Another potential deal breaker. The color selection, however, leads me to believe them. The colors are heavy on colors that are typically Lightfast and lean on those that generally are not. They mentioned no plans to expand the available color range. On the positive, the prices are quite good, even less than Prismacolor in many cases. I paid less than $35.00 US (€29.00, $45.00 Aus). For the full 48 color set. Good price, but not worth it to replace one or a few pencils. I can't, in good conscience recommend these, given the problems and questions about them. I had high hopes. I am disappointed. ... show more

  • New Product that I hope stays.
Received my pencils earlier than was supposed to. They came in a nice silver tin with 2 plastic trays. Had a hard time finding out answers about these pencils and finely the Company that makes them. Finely received answers. These pencils are wax based and they have been lightfast tested just hasn't got info together to show whether on pencils or site. The colors are brite but really limited except on greys. Not very many pastels either. Colors close to Arteza and Koor I noor. There is a crumbling problem, instead of large chunks coming out these just crumble and some all the way to the color caps, but is limited to certain colors. Other colors have had no breakage. Hope these colors can be replaced. Have let the company know and the company that sells them will let me know. Will update about after I get info These are not real soft or hard. They keep a point, even arrive with one. Color lays down smooth and rich in color. Layer pretty good and blend okay. It can be worked with. They are not as hard as the Artists by Derwent. I'd say Medium. Not as hard as Tombow pencils. There are colors I love. They have names no numbers and color caps not the same as leads though some come close. Would definately buy again if it had more colors. There is a small amount of dust and I mean small, haven't had any smudging. Replaced damaged pencils. Hope they will get their good reviews to continue making them then larger sets. ... show more

  • Great, artists' quality pencils
Windsor and Newton are a trusted brand of fine artists' materials for decades, although they are relatively new to the colored pencil market. So I had high expectations for these pencils. So far, they do not disappoint! At $28 for 48 pencils, this price is a STEAL. I'm guessing this is a promotion to introduce their brand to colorists and artists. They hold a point well, so they will feel a bit harder than Prismacolors, more like Polychromos. Very pleasant to work with. I included a coloring I did that was mostly done with them. The blue dress and the skin tones were done with other brands. (I was testing purchases) So far, I haven't experienced any crumbling or breaking leads. Hopefully they will expand their color range, although these do blend pretty well. But of course, we all want MOAR COLORS, lol. If they keep this price point, that would be even better! I'll update my review as I use them more if I develop any issues. ... show more

  • Wonderful pencils but one bent and wood cracking/can't use
These pencils lay down beautifully and blend almost like paint. I have used Winsor & Newton paints, paper, and brushes since I was 4 years old, and that was a long time ago, and still love and trust WN for my art work. To see the production of color pencils and watercolor pencils from WN is truly exciting, and I hope they maintain and extend these lines. They are super quality. I am longing for the appearance of a yellow ochre pencil, but no matter--I have enough sets of quality pencils that I can supplement for now. The sole reason for the omission of one star is that one pencil--cool grey 5--is bent like a twig and the wood at top is cracking--so one pencil slipped by quality control. But the quality of the rest of the pencils is 5 or higher. Great job, WN. Thank you. ... show more

  • I was - surprisingly - not at all impressed.
I expected better quality from Winsor & Newton, so was surprised that these actually are of very poor quality considering the brand name. I have much cheaper off brand pencils that perform better than these. These claim excellent lightfastness - but I can't find a chart anywhere (yet) with ratings. If it is true, that would be the only good thing about these. IMHO the pigment payout is poor, the performance is poor. These pencils do not 'feel good' during use, and since I make art purely for pleasure, these are not likely to see much use. I won't return them simply because it is a hassle - plus I myself have been on the short end of that return stick where you get something you think is new but which is actually a returned product that was sent back out by Amazon as new - I would not want that to happen to someone with this set. Bottom line, look elsewhere for higher end pencils, these fall short. ... show more

  • Does not lay down color easily
I was excited to get these pencils thinking the colors would blend nicely. The colors are dull and do not really blend well. After using these for a few minutes I went back to using Crayola. I have small coloring pages with fine details. It was impossible to color these without smudging.
