I ordered this just before Christmas. It arrived about three weeks early. Took about a week to get here. It was well packed. Foam inside a box, then another box with foam outside that. It's heavy.. .no joke.. I rebuilt the shelf in the picture with real birch wood to support the weight. The MDF bowed. It's well made. Looks fantastic. Sounds even better. I am running Martin Logan motion 15's which are nothing for this amp. I am using my Marantz as my DAC and only using the PRE-INPUTS on the Willsenton. This allows me to control the volume through the Marantz. The remote on the Willsenton is well made but there is not enough control over volume. (Moves in too large of an increment.) Finally, this thing gets hot. You could easily heat a small room. That's the case with any tube amp though. But if you want something high quality that doesn't break the bank this is it. I think you would have to spend many times this amount to get the warmth that this unit produces. I love listening to John Coltrane, or Kenny Dorham, or even Norah Jones. It's just sooo smoooth...

I have owned and listened to a lot of tube equipment, including both versions of the Willsenton R8, and the Willsenton R800i is on an entirely different level. I give it five stars because, for the money, I believe it delivers a level of construction, scale, refinement, and musical involvement that would normally require spending considerably more. This is not a lightweight “entry-level” tube amplifier. The R800i is an enormous, extremely substantial piece of equipment. The transformers are massive, the chassis is beautifully finished, the controls feel solid, and the overall presentation gives the impression of a genuinely serious amplifier the moment you unpack it. But the reason I give it five stars is the sound. My version uses the 300B as a driver tube feeding the 805 output tube, and that combination produces something very special. You get much of the richness, dimensionality, and texture associated with a 300B, but with significantly more authority, dynamic capability, and bass control than I normally associate with low-powered single-ended amplifiers. The midrange is outstanding. Vocals have body, texture, and presence without sounding artificially warm or exaggerated. Male vocals have weight and chest resonance, while female vocals can sound incredibly open and natural. Piano, acoustic guitar, strings, brass, and percussion all have a convincing sense of tone and physical presence. What impresses me most, however, is the soundstage. With a good recording, the R800i does not simply place instruments between the speakers. It creates depth. Performers can appear forward of, between, and behind the speakers, with individual instruments occupying their own space. On the right recording, the presentation can become almost holographic. I use the R800i with Klipsch Cornwall IVs, which are revealing enough to expose noise, harshness, or poor electronics very quickly. The combination is exceptional. The Cornwalls provide the efficiency and dynamics, while the R800i gives them body, refinement, depth, and a level of tonal richness that makes long listening sessions extremely enjoyable. Bass performance deserves special mention because this is one area where some people have preconceived ideas about tube amplifiers. The R800i does not sound soft or weak in the bass. With the right speakers, bass has real weight and authority. It is controlled, textured, and capable of producing impressive impact while still maintaining the natural character that makes tube amplification so enjoyable. It also responds extremely well to tube rolling. I have experimented with premium modern-production tubes and NOS tubes, and the R800i is transparent enough that changes in the 300B, 805, 6SN7, and other positions can be clearly heard. You can fine-tune the amplifier toward more warmth, greater detail, stronger imaging, or a different tonal balance depending on your preferences. That said, you do not need to immediately replace the supplied tubes to enjoy this amplifier. The R800i is already a very capable amplifier in stock form. Tube rolling simply demonstrates how much potential the platform has. Another thing I appreciate is that the R800i can sound extremely refined at lower listening levels while still having the headroom and scale to make large recordings convincing. Small jazz ensembles and vocal recordings can sound intimate and delicate, but orchestral music, rock, and large dynamic passages do not cause it to collapse or lose composure. I also own the Willsenton R8, and I think the R8 is one of the best values available in traditional tube amplification. But the R800i is clearly the more ambitious amplifier. It produces a larger presentation, greater dimensionality, more effortless dynamics, better low-frequency authority, and an overall sense of refinement that puts it in another category. There are certainly more expensive tube amplifiers in the world, and I have no doubt that some of them can outperform the R800i in particular areas. But that misses the point. The question is how much amplifier you are getting for the money, and in that respect the R800i is exceptional. It combines the musicality and dimensionality that make people love single-ended tube amplification with enough power and authority to work with a much wider range of speakers than a traditional low-powered 300B SET. After living with it, comparing it with other amplifiers, experimenting with different tubes, and hearing what it can do with highly resolving speakers, I have no hesitation giving the Willsenton R800i five stars. It is not simply a good amplifier for the price. It is a genuinely excellent tube amplifier that happens to be priced far below what I would expect for this level of performance.

I have had this for almost 2 years now and in the meantime have added the R8 as well. I have 4 tube amps at the moment and these are the cheapest. These are great amps. Heavy but that is what you want. I strongly urge you to swap out the tubes that come with it and upgrade over time. This amp is as good as the tubes you put in. Currently have WE 300B replicas and these makes this thing sing. Tube amps (good ones) are usually expensive and the price point here is low for the sound.

Use as intended, great sound, great potential to roll tubes for even better sound. I replaced all the tubes with better sounding units. Psvane Acme series 300B and 805, Sophia Aqua 274B, Psvane CV181, these units greatly improved the character of the music becoming much more lifelike. A greater soundstage with more depth and clarity, the notes have a sustained presence. Vocals now feel like they are in my room, horns are also devine. To this point, I am very impressed. I own Audio Research D 79,SP10, McIntosh MC60 mono blocks, Ampzilla, Precision Fidelity C4, NAD, Willsenton R8, and more

I just received the R800i, as soon as put it on noticed a huge hum noise, try it xlr, single ended and as a power amp. I have a true balanced DAC and it will not work with the R800i, the xlr input are not true balanced. It's not my first tube gear, the hum balancer doesn't do anything (the screw diver is missing), will give it a couple of days to see if it miraculous improve, after that will send it back. Not happy at all with this amp.

The amp sounds great when it works, but it has design issues. Swapping the 12AX7 and 6SN7 tubes can improve sound quality, though gains are small unless you use top-end tubes. The two 330µF 450V caps next to the rectifier put too much strain on the 274B tube, causing it to fail in about 10 months and making the caps swell. Each time the amp powers on, it sends a huge surge of current to the 274B to convert AC to DC and fill those large caps, which the tube wasn’t designed for—no more than a 10µF cap should be next to it. Willsenton will replace the tube and caps for free within a year, but this doesn’t solve the flaw, so it will happen again. To fix it, I installed a 10µF DC-link cap for AC/DC filtering and doubled the capacitance on the other 330µF 450v cap to 820µF 500v. if you buy a 820uf Rubycon or Nichicon, it will measure around 680uf or 700uf. Adding a soft start circuit can also slow the inrush current down. The 10µF cap slows the current way down, reducing stress on tube and letting 274b tube work as intended. WE300b, Mullard4004 12ax7, Linlai 274b is a good stock rectifier tube, Tung sol 6sn7 or Psvane Summit 6sn7 reputable Companies only is your best bet or go nos. many fake an used tubes out there, is why you only buy as I suggested

Very happy with this purchase, great sound quality, notably nicer than my Yaqin Mc-13s push pull tube amp, clean background, no hum or hiss or anything. Great build quality, nice finish, looks top-tier high-end hifi gear! Highly recommended!!!

So, first off, the good. The amp sounds fantastic. Much better than the R8 I have. When working properly, it's great. The not so good: After 6 to 12 months, I noticed a channel had stopped working. Turned out to be one of my 300B Gold Lion tubes. Swapped in the Willsenton stock tubes, and the amp would not bias properly. I couldn't get it within the required specs...both channels too high. The bad: There are design issues with this amp. How do I know? Because I sent it to Scott Frankland to get fixed, knowing he would be able to diagnose not just the problem, but any issues with the design. The R800i shares plate voltage nodes between the L and R channels. Because of this, it needs bypass caps. There are none. Scott added 4 caps and a bunch of resistors. Also, there isn't enough filtration for the hum. Scott added more. It's well known that Skunkie Designs took apart the WIllsenton R8 and identified numerous issues. It should be known by more people that the R800i has some as well. And if you spend this much money on an amp, it shouldn't require ANOTHER $600-$800 to address the design/cicuit shortcomings.
