  • Nice tool, well made.
Model: Rollable Blade
Nice item, bit larger than the write up and photo would suggest, but larger in a nice way, good “heft” to it. Not something I will use everyday, but when you need one, here it is.

  • Well-made with sturdy materials. Easy to mark lines. Measurements are metric.
Model: Rollable Blade
This is a quality knife made of several sturdy metals, with the type of metal being appropriate for that part’s function; blade is made of steel, the knobs are made of brass, etc. Pros • Easy to mark lines due to sharp blades. • The freely rotating blade is unique, and some might find this more useful over the type with the fixed blade. This is expanded in greater detail in the section titled “Rotating blade vs. fixed blade” • Two separate locking mechanisms. Once engaged, the shaft won’t budge. Cons • The measurements on the shaft are in metric units. This isn’t a negative in and of itself, but I live in the US where everything is in imperial units, so this isn’t very useful. Perhaps the manufacturer can produce an imperial version keeping US consumers in mind. • The measurement lines are only on about ¼ of the shaft’s circumference. See photo. This is annoying because the shaft rotates freely when the locks are not engaged, so you need to take the extra step of making the lines visible in the small window before engaging the locks. This seems like an annoyance caused by a fundamental design flaw that could’ve easily been prevented by making the lines wrap completely around the shaft. Rotating blade vs. fixed blade I got the version with the rotating wheel blade. My previous marking gauges all had fixed blades, and I was curious about the difference. With a fixed blade, you mark by pressing down on the wood while pulling the knife toward you. This requires a fair amount of lateral force, and in my experience it sometimes caused the round face of the gauge to shift, resulting in bent or curved lines. The rotating wheel works differently. It still requires a similar amount of downward force, but far less lateral force, since the wheel blade rolls along the surface as it cuts. This also allows you to mark lines in both directions with similar ease. A good analogy of the difference between the two types would be comparing a standard kitchen knife to a pizza cutter: both cut, but one slices while the other rolls. Personally, I find the rotating wheel version easier to control and more useful overall. 4 stars. I have every intention to continue using this in the future while dealing with the few annoying things mentioned in the Cons section. ... show more

  • Seems decent but only in metric
Model: Rollable Blade
The scribe comes with an extra blade and screw, which is nice. There are not any instructions included in the box (slightly unfortunate), but if you look through all of the pictures and watch the video from the manufacturer it is pretty easy to figure out how to adjust the scale rod. The scale rod only has metric measurements which is again unfortunate but you can either math out the conversion to imperial or use a different measuring device to set the correct distance from the brass plate to the cutter. The scale rod can spin around when not locked down so if you are wanting to use the markings on it, you will have to pay attention when tightening the rear knob to make sure the markings are in the window. I found the easiest way for me to do this is to loosen the know while the rod is locked by the lever, undo the lever lock, slide the rod to the desired setting, engage the lever lock, and then tighten the locking knob. Then, if needed, undo the lever lock, adjust the rod using the fine tune knob, and finally reengage the lever lock. If I did not follow that sequence I found that I may not be able to tighten the locking knob enough to hold the rod in place. The 0.2 mm scale on mine seems to be off. The 0 mark on the window is accurate, but the 0.2 mm lines do not line up with the lines on the scale rod. I do not forsee myself using the scale in the window so it is not a huge issue for me, but it is something to be aware of if you plan on using it. The fine adjustment knob has about 1/2 cm of adjustment for one end all the way to the other. I feel like this is plenty forgiving to make sure you are at the exact setting you are wanting. The blade leaves a decent mark in pine when going with or against the grain. The blade also left a mark on walnut (a bit shallower though) so it does seem to work on hardwoods as well. Some paper instructions would have been nice. Leaving a flat edge down the length of the scale rod to prevent it from spinning when trying to set the desired distance would have been helpful. I really wish they would have included imperial markings on the scale rod. Overall though, it leaves marks in wood like it is supposed to and I can't be upset about that. ... show more

  • Great value for rolling marking gauge with micro adjust
Model: Rollable Blade
This is a very good marking gauge, made of quality materials, with attractive look. It came without any manuals but it's not too difficult to figure out how to use. You have two screw type adjustments and one locking lever. 1) You adjust the gauge to desired marking length, then you twist the outermost knurled knob on the shaft to lock in position. This locks the approximate location so the shaft doesn't move. 2) At this point, you can adjust the middle, larger knurled knob to micro adjust. The micro adjustment has a little over 5 mm range. 3) Once happy with the setup, then you twist the locking lever to locked position which then locks the gauge. The micro adjust will not work in this position. I checked the accuracy of the markings. They are close but not perfect. I set the gauge on top of 3 /4" setup block and the dial shows 18.8 mm (vs 19.05), so 0.25 mm or 1/128 off. I then added a 0.5" setup block for a total of 1.25". It measured 31.6 mm (vs 31.75 mm), so 0.15 mm off. I wish there was a way to zero out this error (the micro dial could have been made adjustable). Still, the errors are too small to worry about for most woodworking tasks and one should be able to work around it easily enough. ... show more
