Description

From Stanley Tucci, award-winning actor and New York Times bestselling author, a deliciously unique memoir chronicling a year’s worth of meals. “Sharing food is one of the purest human acts.” Food has always been an integral part of Stanley Tucci’s life: from stracciatella soup served in the shadow of the Pantheon, to marinara sauce cooked between scene rehearsals and costume fittings, to home-made pizza eaten with his children before bedtime. Now, in What I Ate in One Year Tucci records twelve months of eating—in restaurants, kitchens, film sets, press junkets, at home and abroad, with friends, with family, with strangers, and occasionally just by himself. Ranging from the mouth-wateringly memorable to the comfortingly domestic and to the infuriatingly inedible, the meals memorialised in this diary are a prism for him to reflect on the ways his life, and his family, are constantly evolving. Through food he marks—and mourns—the passing of time, the loss of loved ones, and steels himself for what is to come. Whether it’s duck a l’orange eaten with fellow actors and cooked by singing Carmelite nuns, steaks barbequed at a gathering with friends, or meatballs made by his mother and son and shared at the table with three generations of his family, these meals give shape and add emotional richness to his days. What I Ate in One Year is a funny, poignant, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying serving of memories and meals and an irresistible celebration of the profound role that food plays in all our lives. • A good read
I have three thoughts with this book. 1. This book made me hungry with all the listings of meals and food. 2. This book is sectioned out as a journal, so it was a quick read. 3. I really enjoyed this book with his musings on food, thoughtful observations and humor. I would recommend this book.

  • A Year in the Life of Stanley Tucci
"Yes, hope is hard to find, but it can often be found at the table. And tables are easy to build." This book took me a long time to get through, mainly because of the style in which it's written. This isn't a memoir per se, it's more of a year-long journal about the different things Stanley and his family did and the foods they ate along the way. I really liked the immersion into his life, but this isn't really a "read it in a day" type of book. I think it gets tedious to read more than a few sections at a time. His food descriptions are both simple and complicated, and definitely quite varied and inspirational (or aspirational if you like to cook at all). There are a few recipes scattered throughout, but this isn't really that kind of book, those are just bonuses. I really adore Tucci's writing style, it's congenial enough to keep my interest, but it's also a glimpse into a life in which I have no experience. The life of celebrities is so different from my life, but this book also shows me how many things are similar. If you enjoy Stanley Tucci--his movies, his show Searching for Italy, his previous memoir Taste: My Life Through Food, or even if you just know him from his internet cooking and Negroni making videos--you will find something to like about this "year in the life" book. ... show more

  • loved it, a great read
Stanley Tucci is not only a great actor but fantastic story teller, his descriptions of the recipes, places they visit, family stories are great. I loved this book.

  • I need some pasta, NOW!,,
This was a good book! Stanley keeps one interested in what he has to say - even when it’s about boiling pasta. Being Italian myself, I understand the NEED to have pasta - it’s a craving. He is humorous and interesting- this was a nice read.

  • Disappointing…
I loved Stanley Tucci’s “Searching for Italy” and was looking forward to reading his food diary. Unfortunately I found it somewhat disappointing and a bit repetitive. Yes, he loves pasta all its forms, marinara, eggplant, etc. but it became rather boring to read. I found the pretentious tone and name-dropping a bit off-putting and got tired of reading about his numerous dislikes. There were passages that shone as he described an exquisite dining experience, but for the most part those were few and far between. ... show more

  • For Already-Fans of Stanley Tucci!
If you couldn't get enough of "Searching for Italy," you revel in Stanley Tucci's deep passion for food, family, and culture, and you appreciate his (slightly snarky, slightly sarcastic!) sense of humor, then you will enjoy this book! If, however, you responded "NO" to any of these qualifiers, then you should probably search elsewhere for a suitable read - you will likely be disappointed by this book. I, for one, was thrilled by this "food diary" of sorts, which opens in January 2023 as Mr. Tucci arrives in Rome to film the movie "Conclave." The narrative moves month by month, crosses continents and seasons and public events and restaurant trips and visits from family and friends (some famous, some not). (By the way, the "name-dropping" that some reviewers found off-putting is half the fun, in my opinion - Mr. Tucci is a famous actor who knows many famous people, after all, and learning details about his food-loving famous friends throughout the book felt like a delicious guilty pleasure, no pun intended.) Also, I highly recommend listening to this book in audio format, vs. reading it - hearing Mr. Tucci tell this story enhances its enjoyment greatly, and took me back to the experience of listening to him talk about food and place in "Searching for Italy." The only reason I give this book 4 stars vs. 5 is related to some shoddy production in the audio version I listened to - there are several instances throughout the story where the audio quality shifts quite dramatically, and Mr. Tucci's voice is suddenly presented at a lower pitch and amplitude, with a hoarseness that sounded like he was suffering from a cold. It seemed as if the producers of the audio book decided to add several passages of extra content after they'd already completed the initial recording effort, and they did a poor job matching the newly-recorded content with the audio quality of the original material. This was very distracting and pulled me out of the flow of the story, so MINUS ONE STAR for poor audio production values in the audio version of the book. Otherwise, I loved every bit of this fun food-filled journey through 2023, from one of my favorite actors and foodies! ... show more

  • Interesting Read for Being About What Someone Ate
I enjoyed Taste, so I wanted to read this book when I heard about it. I wasn't expecting to be so drawn into it and have difficulty putting it down. Also, it made me very hungry. Great book.
