Description

Award-winning storytellers Mary M. Talbot and Bryan Talbot’s full-color graphic novel Armed with Madness presents a new perspective on the 1930s Paris art scene from neglected artist, feminist icon, and influential surrealist Leonora Carrington. Reluctant muse and feminist champion—heiress, rebel, refugee—and perhaps the last of the great surrealist artists, Leonora Carrington played many roles in her long and extraordinary life. Exchanging her privileged upbringing in prewar England for the more exciting elite of Paris’s 1930s avant-garde, she comes to rub shoulders (and more) with the likes of Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, and Salvador Dalí after embarking on a complicated love affair with Max Ernst. But the demons that have both haunted and inspired her work are gathering, and when the world goes mad with the outbreak of war and the Nazi invasion, Leonora’s own hold on reality collapses into a terrifying psychotic episode of her own. Eventually fleeing war-torn Europe, she emerges into a new and richly creative life in Mexico City, establishing herself as a prodigious painter, writer, and advocate of women’s rights. Armed with Madness, from the acclaimed partnership of Mary and Bryan Talbot, celebrates the life and career of a truly remarkable artist and woman. Read more

  • Art and life uncompromised
As the work of the male surrealists begins to feel dated – too often provocative for provocation’s sake, with art as a means of ego enhancement – the women surrealists such as Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo have emerged into the forefront as the wiser and more lasting artists. It’s about time! After the sensationalized opening in a madhouse, this graphic novel goes back to Leonora’s childhood in a wealthy British family, her incorrigibility, her rejection of the prescribed life of wealth and privilege, and her embrace of art and the artistic life on her own terms. The love affair between young Leonora and the much older Max Ernst is especially alchemical, as the book shows each of them transforming into one of their own allegorical animals. Leonora’s subsequent period of insanity and her incarceration are topics well suited to graphic representation, and the artist here has captured that pivotal time of Leonora’s life as it mirrored the insanity of World War II. The lurid cover initially bothered me, as did the amount of time spent on Leonora’s involuntary incarceration and the brutal medical interventions of the Spanish insane asylum, which she wrote about in her short book “Down Below.” Like the surrealists themselves, though, we’re still voyeuristically fascinated by madness, which becomes a rich subject for sympathetic illustration here. As I engaged further with this graphic novel, I was enchanted with the presentation of the surrealist ethos for contemporary readers, though it was often hard to keep the characters separated. Max Ernst was clear, but some – Paul Eluard, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Andre Breton – seemed to blur together. The women fared better, though it took some work to figure out which was Leonora and which was her equally influential painter friend Remedios Varo. Allowing myself time to linger over the complex, detailed backgrounds and settings in the book, I nevertheless read it in one sitting. This is an inviting introduction to Leonora Carrington’s life, one that will inspire readers to seek out her artwork and stories to learn more about this fascinating artist and the radical, transgressive 20th century surrealist art movement. ... show more

  • Another excellent book from the Talbots
Would give 4.5/5 if I could. I only downgrade this book in comparing it to the Talbots' other fantastic efforts of the past decade. I love that they have been making these biographical works for great women that would otherwise go unnoticed by traditional (coughPATRIARCHAL) history, and they deserve accolades and recognition for bringing these hidden figures to light in this great medium. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Excellent!
Devoured this awesome book ! I knew very little about Leonora Carrington, until I read this book, (despite knowing and loving some of her paintings). Thank you for creating such a wonderful visual book , it took me on such a beautiful and fascinating journey!

  • Biography of Surrealist artist and writer Leonora Carrington.
Mary and Bryan Talbot's latest historical biography, on the fascinating life of Surrealist artist and writer Leonora Carrington. I discovered Carrington's work only recently, so was interested to see their approach to the subject. While masterfully done, I found the book rather distancing; I suspect it is loaded with references to Carrington's work which went over my head. Also, one has little sense of her functional career and how she was regarding by the art world, and her later life as a political activist is barely touched on. Still, all the Talbot's projects are worth reading and this is as well. ... show more
