Description

Remember when you had maximum versatility with your wood lathe? Take on projects of all shapes and sizes with the WEN 3.75-Inch 4-Jaw Self-Centering Keyed Scroll Chuck. This versatile chuck features dovetailed jaws, allowing you to grip the outside of stock between 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches in size, or to hold internal pilot holes ranging from 1-3/4 to 3-1/8 inches in diameter. The keyed tightening mechanism prevents the chuck from opening during high RPM operation, providing maximum clamping power to your workpiece. If that’s not enough, you can also install the included screw depending on the task at hand. Indexed backplate indicates 24 different positions while the included tools make for easy adjustments to the chuck. The 1” x 8TPI mounting thread fits a wide variety of wood lathes, including the WEN 3420, 3420T, 3421, 3424, 3424T, 34018, 3427, 34018, 34027 and 34034. • it accepts all Nova jaws.
I bought this chuck in June 2019 to turn ink pens and it has worked fantastic. I had to shorten the jaw screws to get the Nova pen jaws to seat properly. I ground them off by about 1/16 inch and the fit was perfect. Unfortunately, I ended up replacing all of the screws at about the 3 year mark (a couple $$ at Ace Hardware). The heads broke off one while I was attaching the jaws. I have turned so small bows which started out as pretty large blanks with this chuck and it has yet to let one fly across the shop. It does not have a locking mechanism to hold it on the lathe in the reverse operation. It will off onto the floor - that was scary! The back has a cover plate to keep the dust out of the internal gears which is nice. It does not have indexing marks on the back or side like the new version. I believe this one is in fact a PSI Barracuda based on the laser engraving located on the inside under the back plate. I'm in Florida so the humidity is bad for al tools so it does have some slight discoloration (rust) on the outside but it does not affect it function. I am very happy with this purchase. I will do a review with photos of the new version I purchased and received last week. It has a few additional features. Would I buy it again, yes! ... show more

  • Ok chuck for the money
This chuck is a good value for the money. Keep in mind, I've only had it for a few days so I have no idea how well it will hold up over time. Contrary to what someone else said, Nova jaws do not fit this chuck properly. Measuring with dial calipers will make it apparent. It certainly is not as well made as Nova chucks but if you are looking to add a chuck to your arsenal to prevent jaw changes this chuck will suit the purpose. Note, the screws are 5mm instead of the usual 6mm and you know how easy it is to lose the tiny screws, so a trip to the hardware store in advance would be prudent. ... show more

  • Holds work pieces firmly
This item works very well. I like the smaller jaw size. At first, mine seemed to catch a bit when tightened but that is smoothing out over time. I have used it alot not had one work piece slip.

  • The internal gears are stripped after three turnings UPDATE
The media could not be loaded. This has been difficult to adjust since my first use. I have turned (3) pieces. I thought it just needed to be broken in and everything would be fine. It has gotten worse. Today I took the plate off the back to find the pinion gears stripped. I have sent in a warranty request to WEN and I will update this review dependent upon their response. I am hoping this is just a fluke and with my luck I just got a bad one. Edit 7-31-2023: SO, I pulled the Pinion gears out to take a closer look. It appears they were mechanically pressed into place damaging the gears during manufacture. This is just poor-quality control. Now I have a paperweight I can't use. All I got back so far from WEN was an automated response. We shall see. Edit 8-1-2023: Posted Video on the gears skipping and the difficulty operating it. This should be smooth and easy to operate. I realized today is my last day to return on Amazon so it's on its way back. I will test the replacement immediately if it even hints of rough gearing it's going to returned and I will go with a Nova chuck. BTW still no response from WEN. UPDATE8-03-2023: Well, the replacement came in. Honestly initially it wasn't any better. So, I took the back off and the gears were like new. Upon closer inspection I discovered the chuck was not put together in the numerically correct order. Jaw 1 was on slide 4 was placed in position 3, Jaw 2 was on Slide 3 and so on. So, I disassembled the chuck and also found the machined surfaces for the screw slides were burred very badly. Not wanting to return yet another WEN Chuck, I got my jeweler files out and went to work on it. I reassembled the chuck making sure each part was matched to its numerical location. Also, one of the retaining pins for one of the pinion gears was burred as well. I put it into a battery-operated drill and used 220 wet or dry sandpaper and then 0000 Steel wool to polish it. After reassembly I am glad to say it works as smooth as silk now. This is very poor quality control. I shouldn't have to spend an hour making this to where it operates correctly. However. AMAZON on the other hand handled this flawlessly and I appreciate their help.....Still no further communication from WEN. ... show more

  • Great Chuck
Works really well on my small lathe. I’m a casual hobbyist and this was a great purchase for me.

  • Great value as a smaller chuck for box turning
I needed a second chuck and one that would handle smaller parts. I use it to make small boxes from 1" to 5" diameter. The lids are turned in this chuck while the box stays in the larger chuck. The i can fit the box diameter to the lid to get the best fit.
