A Good Jointer

This is a well-priced tool. The initial performance has not disappointed. I used it today on about 55 board-feet of pine (a count of 25 boards measuring 3"x1.5"x46") to square up one edge and one face. Blades held up well, noise was not overly intrusive (i wore hearing protection), it was rock-solid stable on my bench, and was very easy to use. The edge was square to the face. I only had to fiddle with the fence once due to user error; the tool performed fine. The packaging was standard, but fairly secure. Setting up was quick, about 20 minutes or so. This included making sure that the fence was square to the main plate. I took a chance without reading the instructions. The parts fit together intuitively(at least for me, but I've setup and used a lot of tools, so that experience comes in handy). The tool is very sturdy. If you suffer from a bad back, you may want some help moving it. My vacuum connected to the dust port easily (I have a 12 gal DeWalt). I did have to stop 3 times to clear out the main vacuum hose. But, this was due to the capacity of the tank, not the jointer, and how long I used it (about 3 hours or so). Overall, I've very satisfied with this jointer so far. The build quality is very good, considering the price and the brand. I read reviews that indicated the surface of the plate gets scratched easily. Yes, It does. But, that does not affect the performance of the jointer; to me, this is not really an issue. You get what you pay for. The plate is formed or cast, it's not solid cast iron. So, I would argue that if you expect that, you will pay a lot more as well. If you are ready to start milling your own project lumber, this is a good starter tool. If a little care and regular maintenance, it should last a while.

Well built, dead accurate straight from the box

This Cutech Jointer is a great reminder that there is a real difference in engineering and manufacturing quality between items coming from Taiwan and those from mainland China. This is a not a knock off or clone of something else, but rather the original that others re-badge. It arrives very well packaged, a good thing as it weighs in at around 100 lbs. Engineered card edge boards surround custom fit foam to keep everything well protected. The documentation is in decent English and easy to follow. Opening the plastic bag surrounding the jointer will have you reaching for shop cloths, as the entire unit is liberally protected with machine oil to guard against rust. Keep track of the fence enhancement pieces and the fence rails as you unbox things. It's well designed and assembled: there are no sharp or exposed edges to the metal work, the cast iron tables are perfectly machined, and the powder coat/paint is perfect. There's not a lot to assembly, just attaching the sliding fence rails and the fence itself. I bought the cast iron fence and so didn't install the supplied fence. The fence support enhancements are simple enough to install, and reflect a manufacturer who listens to customer feedback and acts upon it - earlier models did not have these additional supports and the fence stability was questioned a little because of it. Once assembled the fence was at a perfect 90 to the bed right from the box, no adjustment needed. I ran a 2x6 through both on edge and on it's face, the jointer is quieter than my dust collection and the finish perfectly smooth. Depth of cut adjustment is very straightforward, and locks confidently in place. Early days yet, but first impressions are overwhelmingly positive. I'd gladly buy Cutech again.

Great 8" Planer for the Price

After reading a lot of reviews I purchased this 8" jointer for my home shop primarily based on the reviews and the fact that it is priced more like many of the 6" jointers. I find the additional 2 inches of width to be very handy. The tables are cast iron while many of the competitors are aluminum. It arrived in good condition. A considerable amount of care was given to designing the packaging. The unit was in Styrofoam and double boxed with sturdy corner reinforcement for both boxes. As it came from the factory the tables were very well aligned. Being somewhat of a perfectionist I did make a very small adjustment to the infeed table. I was surprised that a jointer with a spiral cutter was so reasonable priced but here is why: When I read spiral cutterhead I think of carbide blades that can be rotated to provide 4 cutting edges as they wear. This unit does not have carbide cutters. Instead, it has steel cutters that have only 2 cutting edges. I'n not sure why this is any advantage over straight blades since I would expect wear to be similar or, in fact, maybe worse than a 2 or 3 cutter unit with straight blades. I suspect it may wear somewhat faster because the blades are arranged around the cutterhead so that any given point on the piece being fed will have a cutter pass by only once per revolution of the cutterhead. For this reason a somewhat slower feed rate is needed to produce the finish quality of a 2 or 3 blade cutter or spiral carbide cutter. Of course the blades will be far less expensive to replace and I found the finish quality of the boards I tried to be quite good. The manual supplied is mostly adequate. It covers both the 6" and 8" model. There are some inconsistencies and errors of omission. For example, the inside of the front page lists the part number for the replacement cutters. The same part number is used for both jointers even though the 6" version has 12 cutters and the 8" has 16 cutters. Maybe you get 4 extra ones if you have the 6" version. While the reference on the first page is nice they might also have included other replacement parts such as the motor springs and brushes. You'll have to refer to the parts list for these. The most serious omission is that there is no information as to how to adjust the extension arms which are present only on the 8" model. These were not well adjusted from the factory and took some work to figure out how to fix them. The screws on the end of the arms are loosened to adjust the extension tubes laterally so they slide in and out of the table easily. On the underside of the end tube there are set screws which you loosen so you can rotate the collar to adjust the tube up and down. I am pleased with the quality of the unit. it is well built and makes nice clean cuts as long as you don't try to feed it too fast or take too large of a cut. For a home shop unit I think it is quite good.

Two years all good

I bought this jointer a few years ago. I used to true up my stock by hand (winding sticks, scrub plane/jointer plane/smoothing plane). Larger projects got to be tiring. I needed a compact jointer that I could fix to a mobile cart for my small shop. I wanted the jointer to accommodate 8” stock, and I didn’t want to spend a fortune. I took a chance on the Wen and although it feels and looks unserious, it performs beautifully. I got the fence perfectly 90° to the table and it has stayed true the entire time of pretty regular use in the evenings and on weekends. I’ve replaced the blades once upgrading from the stock hss blades to carbide. I’ve probably processed 2000 bdft blades with this machine, mostly cherry, maple and white oak. For the price it has exceeded my expectations. The shortfalls that can’t be blamed considering the price point are the plastic knobs, the wonky table height mechanism that works fine but feels cheap, and the extension in and outfeed supports that work adequately but do a B- job of work support. All in all however this is a five star product for delivering reliable functionality for an inexpensive machine. I’d say this was one of the most unexpectedly positive purchases I’ve made. I highly recommend this jointer.

Great little machine

It wasn't even close to being properly aligned and adjusted when it arrived, so it took me a couple of hours to get it really well aligned, but it works surprisingly well and can make boards extremely smooth and straight after you get the machine properly adjusted. The fence is a bit flimsy, so I wouldn't recommend relying on the fence to give you a perfect 90.0 degree angle on the side of a board, but that can be achieved on a table saw instead. For how inexpensive this machine was, I'm very surprised how powerful it is, how smooth it cuts, and how strong and durable it seems (except for the fence).

Great entry level machine for the money!

Great machine! It does what’s suppose todo on resurfacing wood and truing edges. It does have to be mounted to a bench or table with Lag bolts. Quiet running machine. Haven’t had change the the inserts yet. I take lite cuts to clean up the surface of the wood. It is a sample design using aluminum for the table. It weighs is a little on lite side. But power of the motor is more than sufficient to gets good finish on about any wood. The push paddles that come with the machine are needed to operate your joi tee safely. Use them if you want to keep all your fingers. The paddles are needed to push the wood across the table without endangering your hands or fingers.

Works well!

I have limited space, so finding a benchtop jointer was my only real option. Pricing is also one extreme to another. Either you'll pay $300-$500 or over $1000. After reading all the reviews concerning the fence I was skeptical, but based on my experience with WEN I figured it was a worthwhile shot. So far I'm extremely happy with the jointer. The fence was almost perfectly square out of the box, although the table needed some adjustment. Once it was dialed in, every board coming off the jointer has been perfectly square. The fence is solid, and doesn't move. You really shouldn't be putting a lot of pressure against it anyway, because the face you place on it should be perfectly flat and smooth. The jointer is quiet and cuts well, dust collection is damn near perfect. I wouldn't recommend planing more than 1/32" at a time though. If you're on the fence, go for it. WEN is great in the space of affordable, rugged tools. I've resawn 8/4 white oak on my WEN bandsaw and it took it and kept going. Solid company, solid tools.

Jointer cast iron board? NO. Still good though…

I am keeping it but people need to know that the board is NOT cast iron. I am talking about the jointer that I just got. The jointer board is not cast iron. Why why why so many people/companies are lying? What’s the goal? Make money. Money money money and quick. It makes absolutely no sense when you think just a minute about it. Short term goal. Do they think we, human race is evolving? Not at all like that. Listen, it’s a good product for the price and aluminum board is super duper durable strong so, they should not lie. You are wasting your time and ours and we all pay more in the end. People would have to return it etc etc etc. wasting time and money
