  • High value and performance for a reasonable cost
Growing up my father had a number of WEN tools in the garage. They always performed well and that left a good impression on me. I have always considered WEN when I need a new tool. Fast forward, I was looking on Amazon for a high quality vise for my new workbench and came across the WEN 455BV 5-Inch Heavy Duty Cast Iron Bench Vise. I went ahead and ordered it. It is a quality tool with perfect alignment and smooth action. No play whatsoever so it is easy to set up and precisely hold your workpiece. My use is primarily for metal and plastic materials and for them it is ideal. I am completely happy with this WEN product. ... show more

  • Good "cheap" vise
It's a no frills vise. I'm sure there are better one's out there but for light clamping jobs I have no complaints given the price point. Well worth the modest price.

  • Value for money: A heavy bargain
I'd been in the market for a bench vise for several weeks. I checked the online auction site and the local online bulletin board. I didn't see anything that met my need for a heavy, well-made vise that suited my desire for an inexpensive vise for occasional use. I spied the Wen 455BV-5 5-inch vise early on, but it was more than $50 so I kept looking. At $2 a pound for a lump of cast iron, I was willing to continue my search. Then Amazon offered it to me for $38, with Prime shipping. Sold. It arrived in a couple of days and I picked it up at the local Amazon store. It looked great out of the box. It was nicely finished with a powder-coated surface but it was covered in packing oil (to prevent rust in transit from China) and a bit stiffer than I expected. After cleaning it off, it was still somewhat stiff, so I felt it would work but it could have been better. Then I saw a YouTube video on how to tune a new vise. Clean off the packing oil, disassemble the vise (quickly done), file down the rough edges on the castings, use paste wax on the moving/mating surfaces and any other surfaces you don't want to rust, and then reassemble. I did all that and it made a big difference! This is a smooth, tight, heavy bench vise. I think it was a bargain. I've only had it for a week, but I think I'm going to get great service from it. At 5 inches, I might have overbought, but better to have too much capability than too little. The integrated anvil is a nice feature to have, by the way. ... show more

  • Great vise for the money
My old vise was a 50-year old Craftsman made in the USA. It was the kind of thing that I could see being passed down in the family. But one day I was bending some metal, and a loose center bolt that I wasn’t aware of created enough play to break off the bottom of the vise where it swivels on the mount. I was surprised to find that Sears once offered repair parts, but they were discontinued long ago. I thought the purchase of a new one would be quick and easy. That was until I started seeing bad reviews of many vises sold online and in local stores. Affordable USA-made vises comparable to what I had are a thing of the past, the metal used now is much weaker, and durability is a big issue. I only use a vise for general purposes in the home shop, but I don’t want to be afraid of using it hard or having to replace it. Then I came across this Wen 455. It was bigger and more heavy duty than others I was looking at, and the specs on the weight backed that up. I have only had it for a few weeks but so far, I’m very impressed. The quality was apparent right out of the box. It’s a really solid unit that grips great, you can feel it’s well made when screwing the jaw, and I expect the dual swivel locks to do a better job of keeping the vise stationary when working. I have every indication this will provide many years of good service. ... show more

  • For the money, surprising quality.
I have always wanted a vise for my workbench, but since I would not use often I didn't want to spend too much. This was a big surprise-in a good way. The jaw alignment was food-and the 2 pieces mated well. The 2 dogs to hold from swiveling engage well and have good lockdown force with minimal effort. The edges are finished well enough and the threads move easily. All in all a great value for an occasional use 5" bench vise. The only complaint I could have is that I would prefer more swivel travel to tuck it out of the way when not in use and for versatility. ... show more

  • Ggreat for the DIYers shop
After fighting with a variety of clamps to secure projects, I realized it was time to upgrade to something more sturdy. This 5-inch bench vise is just what I needed. It has been great to use for disassembling and reassembling all sorts of devices and machines. Also works well for holding mower blades as they are getting sharpened. The jaws open much wider than I have needed so far (note that there is no stop point, the jaw will open to the point of coming apart). For the price, it seems to be well made, sturdy, and heavy. It might not survive the shop of a professional, but for the home DIY person, this is a buy. ... show more

  • Solid and works well
This is solid and well built. The castings are high quality and the components are well sized for it. Both the swivel and the jaws tighten and release cleanly. I am immensely happy with this. It just works. My only quibble (and a really minor one at that) is that as shipped from Wen (mine was not shipped by amazon), there was no additional packaging and the shipper slid it enough on the ground to wear through all of the layers of packaging and the hammertone finish and a bit of cast iron on a small section of the vise was worn off. ... show more
