  • Great band saw if setup properly
Size: 10 Inch Style: 3962 Pattern Name: Saw
Follow the instructions for setup, dial in all the adjustments, and you will have a fine band saw. I have not had any issues with this saw in over three years of ownership short of a bad fence from the factory that I had replaced. My guess is some of the lower reviews are from improper setup or trying to use a 10" saw to do the work required of a 14" or larger. I take my time with any new saw or tool and set it up properly, and all of my saws perform as described. The manual is correct on adjustments for this saw, however there are better instruction videos on YouTube. I recommend the method by Alex Snodgrass. I have yet to encounter any problems in over three years of use. My blade has never popped off the wheel, never any issues cutting true, and never had a blade break. As a matter of fact I used the stock blade for a couple years before replacing with a 1/2" Olson 4t blade. Granted I don't use the saw every day or even every project, but I have used it fairly regularly the entire time I've owned it. I work with mostly hardwoods but also pine, plywood, and MDF. It takes some time to re-saw 5" to 6" walnut for example but it will get it done. The original blade was actually quite good but the newer Olson 1/2" blade was a big step up in performance. I recommend buying a quality blade when you purchase this saw and keep the stock blade for backup. Adjustments on this saw are easy in my opinion. I have a couple magnets on the frame that hold the wrenches for adjustments, which makes it nice because I never have to search for them. The only time I really have to mess with it much is when changing the blade, but other than that I just tweak it once in a while. I do make sure to always loosen the blade when I'm finished for the day to keep the slack off of it. I try to keep the sawdust cleaned out of it regularly and wipe the table down with paste wax. The dust collection is okay but not great. The fence isn't the best either but it does the job and doesn't move a bit when set. The miter gauge is cheap like most other saws this size, and the size is not standard 3/4" of course so it's not something you can easily upgrade. It works fine for most of the stuff I do but you can always make a new one out of hardwood. There are two speeds on this saw but I just keep it on high most of the time. However, I might change it to low soon since I've been using it more often lately for hardwoods. And by the way, having two speeds is a nice feature at this price point. Another feature I like is the light. WEN customer service is the last thing I want to cover. I have contacted WEN 3 or 4 times over the last few years and they have been a pleasure to deal with each time. One of the wheels on my band saw did not have any counter weights on it so I wasn't sure if it was balanced. The customer service rep simply verified my purchase from Amazon and shipped two brand new wheels to me that same week even though I only asked for one. It turned out the new wheels were the same so I just keep them as spares because the saw runs fine and the wheels seem balanced. The pictures show counter weights on both wheels so I felt it was worth inquiring about. I called once more about the fence due to damage from the factory and they shipped me a new fence within a week. I only asked for the fence part of the assembly but they sent the entire assembly with rail. And the other time I had to call them was when I bought the 12" Variable Speed Drill Press and it arrived with a damaged roller for the roller extension. Once again, WEN shipped a new replacement to my door within about a week, and although I only asked for the roller they sent the assembly with extensions. In addition to the band saw and drill press, I have a WEN air filtration system 400 sq ft and a WEN 12.5" Planer. I have not had any issues with any of the tools short of the damaged fence and roller from the factory. In my experience WEN makes tools that are well worth their price and I have no problem recommending the ones I own. This band saw is easily worth 5 to me and thus I recommend it to anyone looking for a 10" light duty band saw. One day I plan to upgrade to a larger model from Grizzly or Laguna and I will install a smaller 1/8" or 1/4" blade on the WEN and use it for curves and detail work. ... show more

  • More than I bargained for
Size: 10 Inch Style: 3962 Pattern Name: Saw
Looked extensively at the Sears 10", Rikon 10" and Harbor Freight 9". I discovered the Wen by accident. After checking out reviews, I bought one from Amazon. Yes, it was more money but well worth the expense. There's not near the plastic in this bandsaw as there is in the others. By comparison, the others are toys. Granted, this is not a full professional bandsaw but it is a serious hobbyist tool. I cut small 3"-4" round oak and mesquite logs into knife scales with it and it works far past any expectations I had of it. The factory blade is not a quality blade and it won't last long but the saw makes great, smooth cuts that are straight. The packaging leaves a lot to be desired though. Mine looked like it came to the house on a nuclear bomb. The instructions and owners manual were missing out of the busted up box but all of the hardware was there and no damage to the saw. The online instructions are apparently old as the saw didn't go together like the instructions stated. They were using parts that weren't in the box but just a little mechanical knowledge and it goes together great. The unit comes with balanced wheels which makes for a smooth running machine. I did have issues with the two speed. Changing to the faster side of the pulley had the belt running on the mounting bolt of the motor. A little file work and that was over. The table is generous in size and the fence works great. The LED light seems like it's located on the wrong side as it comes from the backside. I've managed to get it where it's out of the way and lights the table up that even a blind man can see. The one I received was pretty much setup in regards to the blade adjustments. I didn't have to touch any of the adjustments. If I had a negative about it, it would be that it's no lightweight. If you need to move it around, it's heavy. So far, I'm loving this saw. ... show more

  • Another good product from Wen
Size: 10 Inch Style: 3962 Pattern Name: Saw
This is the third Wen tool that I've purchased. I have a Wen drill press and scroll saw and have been very happy with both of them. This band saw is another good purchase. Set-up was relatively easy. The spacing on the bearings and the blade tension needed to be be adjusted but the manual walked me through the process. The part that I was was most worried about, tracking, was fine and needed no adjustment out of the box. In a time when most manuals of any kind are written by someone whose first language is not English, this manual was a pleasure to read. It was very helpful and well written, but they also let someone have some fun writing it. Many parts were downright witty. I know that sounds strange, but there were some very intentionally amusing parts. The manual is not a part of the tool, but it tells me that if Wen puts that much quality into their manuals then that quality must carry over into the tools. I've been using the saw daily for several weeks now, and have a good feel for it. I've been very demanding in terms of accuracy and precision. It cuts cleanly and accurately through oak and 2x4. My only complaints are that the table is not constructed in such a way as to facilitate clamping to it, and that I have had to clamp things to it because the fence is terrible. The fence only clamps at the front, so the back rises up when clamped, the fence face is not perpendicular to the table, and it's impossible to clamp it down in one spot with any sort of precision. So I've had to make my own fence and clamp it to the table. It's odd that they market these tables in terms of throat size: how wide a piece you can put through. To me the more important dimension is the maximum depth of cut. The 9-inch model gets you 3.5 inches depth. The 10-inch model gets you 6 inches depth, so definitely buy this model rather than the next size down. I would highly recommend this product. Set-up was easy, the saw cuts very well, and it's a good price. Be aware that the fence is kinda crappy, which may or may not matter to you. ... show more
