  • Great Drive!
I am backing up about 17 TB of data so bought two and mirrored them together and the transfer was a breeze.

  • New Unit Already Has Severe S.M.A.R.T. Entries Warning Impending Failure
It's not shocking to have a bad drive, or get a bad drive. This has been a constant ever since the first PC "Winchester" drive was created, a massive 5MB, full-height beast. This was a while ago, and we marveled because the 60MB hard drives on our mainframe were the size of refrigerators and this new HD thing fit in a PC. It cost > $1000, and that was in 40 years ago dollars. 5MB! No joke. My watch has more storage. This Western Digital drive also comes with non-responsive technical support. I hate to say that, because I know these WD people, personally. I've been to their HQ, and their warehouses. I've seen the stacks of bad drives that fill the hallways. That's the nature of spinning media: stuff goes wrong. Heck, entropy attacks everything. Anyways, history lesson aside, bad drive, non-responsive tech support. It's also not the fastest drive around. In fact it is frequently very slow. But it's big and its cheap, just be prepared with a backup strategy. ... show more

  • Bought 3 of these from global electronics
Hopefully arriving tomorrow. These are based off the old HGST drive line. Which was hitachi before western digital and Ibm before hitachi. IBM had the "Deathstar" line of drives and did a 180 and became the most reliable drives there are. Im glad these are not hyped as it saved me some coin over the golds. I currently have golds 6tb andc bumping 3 of them to 20tb ea. I will update in the near future.... Edit: 3 came in registered them with WD and I got 5 yrs. Legit. Comes in typical hard drive brown cardboard box. The packing material was some air pods, but there were a lot of space for the boxes to move and bump. But if they last 5yrs then they should be good..... Happy so far. Unraid is rebuilding parity now. ... show more

  • A Few Defects
Drive shipped in its own box, with some cushioning built in (see pic). Drive had 0 hours on it, and the 5-year warranty. Formats to 18TB (20TB claim is raw, unformatted drive). Very similar to the HC550 I purchased earlier this year, but with a few more defects from the factory or due to shipping. DiskGenius has a great verify drive feature where you set the timeout value. From that value cylinders will be rated Excellent, Good, Normal, etc. down to Damaged. The HC550 I bought earlier that came in a box shipped in a box with padding had only 2 cylinders rated as Damaged when tested with a 100ms timeout threshold. This HC560 had 304 cylinders. Now in the case of both drives, when reverified there were none I assume remapped, and spares used. Still a great drive, 304 cylinders is only 0.013% of total, but of course I prefer none out of the box. ... show more

  • Died in less than 6 months
It's great to have large capacity drives but the quality is really bad. I have drives that have been working going on 6 years, of course they are under 4tb. I have another 16tb drive that died in less than a year as well from Seagate so there's something with these high capacity drives. L If you plan on getting drives anymore, you should buy two and keep one as a back up (hopefully that doesn't die) as you're gambling on whether you'll lose your data. ... show more
