  • Solid 8 TB NAS (or 4TB RAID 1 Redundant)
Color: Gray / Silver Size: 8TB
I'm writing this review a full TWO YEARS after original install of this NAS. So I can confidently say: It's been SOLID and FAULT TOLERANT. It's had a few data glitches, but absolutely nothing not 100% RECOVERABLE and that is a HUGE advantage to this system. It works. : ) And yes, although this really is a full 8TB of storage, I set it up on my network as two REDUNDANT 4TB RAID 0 segments, so that I could have better redundancy across my file space. The last two NAS units I've purchased over the last five years both ended tragically and catastrophically as total data wipeouts. Even though they'd claimed to have good failover backup... when push came to drop... the data simply could not be restored, and I lost some stuff. So one of my REQUIREMENTS for this new system was to be able to configure it as RAID 0... meaning two TOTALLY REDUNDANT drives... if Drive1 fails, then all the data is replicated on Drive2, and vice versa. This may seem like a kind of overkill and like a waste of 4TB storage, to have to split the drive in two identically replicated units... but I'm guessing if that's your opinion, then you probably have never lost an entire data store before?? Losing giant chunks of data when THIS IS your backup or NAS store... that's just not a good feeling! My recommendation: Figure out what are your full storage requirements, then DOUBLE IT and buy a NAS twice the size you need, and configure it as RAID 0 (fully redundant). Each half of your NAS will be a complete replicate of the other half. And that's a good feeling, to know you're covered! : ) ... show more

  • Straightforward setup
Color: Gray / Silver Size: 8TB
Unboxing and setup: Took about twenty minutes before I was backing up my important documents and photos. Pretty easy to use interface. I saw another review saying it had to be plugged into the wall, which made no sense. I have it plugged into a power strip. (Unless they were implying it's not PoE, which it isn't. I wouldn't expect a double disk drive to be PoE, not would I want it to be.) By default this is setup as a RAID (if you don't know what that is, it means on an 8TB drive, only 4TB is usable because the data is replicated between the drives for backup purposes in the event one drive fails, you still have your data.) you can change this, though for most people I wouldn't recommend that. Now I've got backup drives mapped to my computer for my data. Only thing I wish I could do is make Google drive also do a backup on the NAS for even more redundancy. ... show more

  • Solid drive, but not great integration with Time Machine
Works great in terms of backing up and holding my information however, I am a couple years in now and it will every once in a while have a hard time doing the back up. It wants me to erase back up. It’s not dealing with Time Machine the way I would like it too. That’s why I removed one star because the functionality is not nearly as easy breezy as I would’ve liked it to be. But a good price for a good product and a solid back up. ... show more
