im not sure what to think about this kalimba. this is my 6th kalimba for my collection & it is my most expensive one as well. so i was expecting a higher quality w the price. unfortunately, i have had some disappointment w this kalimba. to begin, it was so dirty right out of the box that my first thought was that the sellers were scamming me w a used product. sticky finger prints all over the tines- not like a kid played it while eating candy kinda sticky, but sticky like a mechanic manhandled it while changing the oil in someones car. it was BAD. while cleaning it, i realized that there was a strong chemical scent coming from it so i began to theorize that the sticky residue might be the stain / sealant used on the wood & that whoever stained it didnt wipe their fingers before handling the tines & never bothered to clean up after themselves. i can only assume that the residue was on there for a while considering it took me a good 40 minutes to wipe away all of the fingerprints. side note: i used the microfiber cloth that came w the kalimba but the cloth is already ragged bc of this. it was a strong soldier at least, did the job well. after my kalimba was clean, it was just gorgeous & i was excited to hear how it sounds. so i ran up the scale just once.... & all of the keys on the left side were severely out of tune. which was weird bc the right side sounded perfect. good thing i have a lot of experience w tuning. i can forgive an out of tune kalimba, but if this is someones first kalimba & theyre still on the learning curve, then this would have been a bit of a turn off. 50min-1hour after the initial unboxing & my kalimba was finally ready for its first song. now we came to the real issue. everything else until now had been something that i can fix but this problem is just too much of a disappointment for the price. id already noticed something a little off about one of the tines while tuning but it became more & more & more apparent as i played: the E° tine is almost completely dead. it doesnt resonate at all. a dead E° on a brand new $45 kalimba is ridiculous. if youre gonna sell me a kalimba w a dead tine then at least make it D°° or E°°. those are the keys that i expect to be less resonant, not E°. i have tried everything to fix it - it was slightly more bent than the other tines so i tried straightening it, no good. i tried the filing method, i tried wiggling the tine in case its too tight, tried the paper cleaning method, all unsuccessful. my only solution now is to replace the tine, which is extremely frustrating. i really want to give this a higher rating bc its true that the kalimba is beautiful. & all of the other tines do sound wonderful & resonate perfectly. but since the pros are all buried under a bunch of cons that i have to fix right off the bat, i need to be honest. i subtracted 1 star for the need to clean & tune on arrival. & minus another star for the dead tine. im disappointed & really worried since a dead tine on a brand new kalimba can sometimes indicate a problem w the body itself, but i'll keep trying to make it work. i havent lost all hope, just some of my excitement.

I had an 8 key kalimba and decided to go with a 21 key. 17 probably was enough but figured for the price might as well go with a 21. It appears to be in tune upon delivery. Construction is great however the instruction manual is not. It does not explain anything. The songs included in the manual require you to read sheet music. The finger tip pieces are designed for a pointer finger but it is a thumb piano. Tuning hammer is cheaply made and recommend buying a better one. The case does not fit the manual but considering the manual does not explain anything this is not too bad. No place in case to store the hammer so hopefully it does not scratch the kalimba. I had the accessories in the pouch but they fall out and end up everywhere. For $39 you do get a nice sounding instrument. The Kalimba is five star the accessories, manual and case drop it down to 4 star.

My husband received this as a gift from me. He was so excited. He started playing it and hasn't stopped. I also purchased the music book. He pulled it out and started playing it like a pro.

I seen a few of these, even tried to play them. But they were fairly small and really more like rhythmic toys. They were fun and funky...and out of tune! That's why I became interested in this Kalimba. It's large size makes it playable. In fact, the WALTERT Kalimba Thumb Piano is a beautiful musical instrument crafted from exquisite black walnut wood, creating a striking visual appeal.
