    • Warning on lag screws and OLD 2x4s...

I just got around to installing these. My house was built in 1938, with a detached garage. I am not sure if the 2x4s are case hardened from all the baking over the years, or if the 2x4s of many years past were way harder. Pine is pine, right? Nailing into these is a nightmare... so I wanted to do a test first. Luckily, I had a spare 2x4 from the garage left over from the side door I put in. I drilled a correctly sized pilot hole using in the center of the 2x4s edge, and proceeded to drive in the supplied lag bolt... and watched the 2x4 split. I tried the other end with a larger pilot hole... same issue. I cut the spit off and started again, but this time with a 1/4 lag bolt, and had no such issue. My suggestion, if you are driving into very old , or very hard, studs, use a smaller 1/4 lag bolt. I would test in a new 2x4 too. Due to where I put them, over the side door, one of them can only have two lag bolts installed. I hung from them for several seconds, and they held 180 lbs with no issue. By the way the little plastic washers that are for stopping metal on metal are a nightmare to keep in place I just ended up bending the "tabs" out a little, and drew them back in with the nut. The arms do not stay up, so if I had to do this again, I would get ones that do not move. They might stay up if I were to tighten the nut more, but that just made them hard to move. No bid deal as they will never be up anyway. ... show more

I saw so many people saying how the orange piece fit too tight and the sticker spacers were an issue and I agree at first.... So if you are starting from scratch, lag bolt the black pieces to the studs. Then get up on the ladder and take each tight orange piece and put it over the black vertical and gently push left and right to open the gap. Once all the orange gaps are wider by 1/4" or so, apply the stickers on every side hole, put the orange thing over it and use a drill driver and wrench to tighten the bolt/nut and that bends the orange thing back nicely. I bought 2 x 2 packs for a total of 8 pieces and hung 2 sets of 3 over my garage door and one set of two pictured here. I have at least a couple of hundred pounds of random wood and they are strong. ... show more

As others have suggested, do not use the included wall screws as they are not long enough to securely screw the brackets into studs. I bought 3 1/2” or 4” carriage bolts and added washers to secure to the studs. The instructions provided are kind of a joke. Pretty typical for China-made products. For example, how and where you put the plastic self-stick spacer washers was simply a diagram, with no additional verbiage to adequately explain where, how, why they needed to be installed. I just had to figure it out through trial and error. Speaking of error! The plastic, self-stick spacer washers are a joke! You are supposed to stick one on each side of the wall-mounted tubes. For my application, this was a total of 24 spacers and the process was pretty tedious and long positioning each one of these. Then the horizontal brackets are supposed to fit over both spacer washers, and then you slide your screw through the side hole, through both spacers. Good luck! The brackets are too tight to fit over the spacers. The self-stick spacers simply slide away because everything is too tight! So tedious and frustrating! In the end, I simply used just one spacer on one side as there was no way possible that 2 spacers would accept the bracket. Even just using just one spacer washer was very tight, and the spacer would slide out of position every time I tried to position the bracket and align with the screw holes! After about and hour plus, I got all the brackets screwed together. Just poor engineering! The final results are fine and the supports are sturdy. In hindsight, I think I would have opted for supports that were already assembled and just needed to be wall-mounted like the Bora system. I opted for these because I just wanted a 3-tier system, double wide vs a 5 or 6-tier system. ... show more

Needed some new shelves for my growing wood piles and based on the reviews decided to give these a whirl. I was disappointed with their condition after I opened the box, a lot of scratches which wouldn't bother me save for quite a number were deeper then the powder coating and clearly have rust showing. I decided to forgo the return/repurchase route and deal with the rust myself. Installing is fairly straight forward just be mindful of which end is up/down when you do put them up as the sides were you will install the lag bolts don't have it where the pre-drilles holes are even with each other regardless of which end is up. I used a silver sharpie to mark the matching ends of each to be sure I would put them up correctly. I stalling them the wrong way will have it so the shelves arms aren't level with each other. Another issue was the plastic "washers" they give you to take up the dead space on the arms. A great idea in theory but getting them to line up and then stay in place while trying to get the arm on, bolt through and so forth was on the verge of impossible. While they do have a peel and stick base, they're just thick enough that I wasn't able to get the arms over with both washers in place. I ended up sanding them a little thinner, about .002", to get them to fit. Once I dealt with the issues and got the shelves installed however I am pleased with how they came out. ... show more
