Kindling is the bane of my existence. We love wood fires and usually go through at least a cord (and up to two cords) of wood a year. Our greatest pain point is kindling. This is an awesome tool to help easily cut more kindling without need of a hatchet and chopping block. This is a serious wood cutter, made of strong, heavy steel and is designed to accommodate various lengths and widths of softwood. It can be used by a right hander or left hander (useful for our family). It also comes with a set of gloves and hardware to attach to a wall - though can also be attached to a block. Not a problem for us, but this is designed for small logs that are knot-free.

I've been wanting one for a long time and finally decided on this one. Installed it on the side of my shed at a stud. First attached a 1x4 and then attached the splitter to it. It's attached very solid. I did it this way just to have the splitter off the shed wall a bit. Splits small wood under 12" easily. 16" inches a little harder to split. I split scrap lumber for kindling and this splitter spkits through that like nothing. Super easy. Comes with mounting hardware saving you a trip to the hardware store.

I'm not a huge fan of cutting kidling. I got this in hopes that it would make me feel better about doing it. It has helped in the fear of cutting my toe or something similar. I threw a few chunks of wood out to cut into kindling. Grabbed one and started testing. First of all, put it up on a wall. It really does not work to have it on the ground. Secondly, make sure that your wood is very dry. Once I installed mine on the wall, which is a tree. I threw a piece of firewood in there and pulled it down sharp. It did a good job of splitting it into kindling. However, the second piece of wood didn't do as well. It didn't splinter quite so easily and I think it was because it was a tad bit too large in diameter. The third one I threw in was smaller and did well. So even though it's not a perfect science, it did help. I really like the fact that I can send the grandkids out to cut me some kindling and I don't have to worry that they're going to take off a finger or a toe. That in itself, is worth it!

Well, I think this could break not just wood, but probably even steel. It's the embodiment of the term "heavy duty." Quite heavy. I plan to use this at my mountain cabin, where I spend my weekends in winter. I tried it at my current home to split firewood for a picnic, and the result was excellent.
