Wahoo vs Garmin: No Contest

I'm not much of a review person unless I feel strongly enough about a product to find my way here. But I would be remiss not to share my experience with the Wahoo. I've lived in the Garmin universe for a while now (Forerunner watch, 520, 530 GPS's, handhelds, etc..), but after the hack this summer when all the uploading/syncing workouts became a huge issue, I needed to find an alternative. I was skeptical of Wahoo, capriciously because I didn't think the name sounded like a serious cycling accessory company, but the folks at REI spoke highly of them. Decided to give this Elmnt Bolt a shot, and boy is it night and day. The UXI on wahoo is SO much simpler than Garmin, the maps are better (even on the Bolt which is just B&W), the setup was a breeze and the pages are so easy to navigate to get all the information you could ever want. Seamless integration with sensors too. I was so impressed that I quickly ended my lengthy trainer search and settled on the Kickr, which is similarly great. Don't waste time on a horizontally integrated Garmin who produces so many products for so many industries when you have the option to support Wahoo which focuses almost exclusively on cycling and getting their few products spot on.

Compact, reliable and accurate

What more could be expected from a bike GPS? With this one I have all the features I need and much more. The screen with focus and customizing features is readable without glasses, though my vision isn't good at all. The LED are helpful, GPS instructions are clear, data are complete, connectivity with apps, phone and sensors is good. The support is strong and safe (I use both systems, on 2 bikes), super easy to install and remove the device. The battery lasts many hours, after a ride of 4 hours I still have 80 % or more. Absolutely recommended.

Does Everything As Designed

I have ridden over 600 miles (2 centuries) with this bike computer and absolutely love it. It easily connected to my phone and the Wahoo sensors I already had mounted on my bike. It was easy to connect to Strava and Ride GPS to get my maps and upload my rides. I have ridden two centuries with this computer and used maybe half the battery life in about 8 hours without the turn by turn navigation and about 75% with navigation. It did take me a minute to get used to the navigation as I do not have the touch screen and had to use the buttons to zoom in and out. But once I got it right I didn't miss a turn. I would definitely recommend the Wahoo Element for it's precision, reliability and value. Does most everything the more expensive models can do.

I love this thing! Technically-superior alternatives exist but offer less bang for your buck

It does exactly what it claims to. It's very sturdy. I can't live without it after using it on every ride for the past 3 months. It is compatible with a bunch of different route planning software (I use RideWithGPS). Bottom line is: I would say that it's arguably the best overall and highest-priority upgrade possible for a beginner rider (like myself), and it changed my routine for the better. I ride alone, so having a Doom-style automap available right on your handlebars has come in handy on several occassions when I've gotten lost 10 miles from my starting point. I strongly encourage you get it (especially if you are a beginner/early-intermediate rider), unless you already have something better or you have ample disposable income available to get something better from the off. I can't imagine you'll regret it.

UPDATED to 5 star: You can see below I was super annoyed when I first got this computer as I was running into a lot of sync issues with my phone. After reaching out to Wahoo's service, they got me squared away and now I'm loving this computer -------------------- 2 star review: first - i love the computer for the basic aspect of having some data while i'm riding. i also love analyzing some of the data after the fact via strava; however, getting the data to strava is another annoyance. I successfully paired the device to my phone and my wifi yet anytime I want it to actually get the data off the device it takes about a dozen restarts until it actually loads. there's also a huge annoyance where I can even use strava live segments because the device won't keep a pair with my phone for more than 10 minutes, after which I get a notification on my phone that "ELEMNT is currently not able to register with iPhone for any notifications..." and that I should forget the device from my phone and from the companion app, and then also forget my phone from the device, just so that I can re-pair the two and have it break again 10 minutes after.

How tech should work...great cycling computer

Purchased this to replace my old Garmin Edge 500 and to complement Garmin Fenix 3. The Garmin Edge was decent but battery would run down without an easy way to check charge and connection to gps sometimes would take a very long time (10’s of minutes). Frustrating. Decided to try WAHOO ELEMNT BOLT. The tech is great- bar code scan to launch to set up phone app; upgrade is fast it is intuitive and robust. It mounts easily on handle bars and is in easy view. BOLT display is easy to read and has all data up front. Set up is fast, connecting IPhone app to BOLT is easy- no bugs. Added third party sensors-Garmin strap heart rate monitor and Stages power meter - without any problems. Easy calibration of power meter. Auto upload of data to Strava or to many different training apps. The BOLT data seems more accurate and detailed compared to my admittedly older Garmin Edge (certainly these would have improved by Garmin since I purchased, but I don’t have any other experience to compare). Only issue- my first BOLT had display screen cut out after 6 weeks- it just went blank when I started a ride one day, (although it collected the ride data). WAHOO quickly replaced it with new unit after verifying my purchase- they shipped me a new unit after verifying return of old unit. I was concerned it would be weeks before getting old unit fixed, but it was like 5 days from my problem until receiving new unit. It took less than 5 minutes to remount the new unit, set up and pair sensors and set off on my ride. I am very pleased with the tech and WAHOO customer service response, and in spite of the display problem I can recommend with no reservations.

What took me so long?

I purchased the Wahoo because of the price and because I wanted a dedicated computer for my older road bike. I already have a Garmin 530 on my more “special” road bike and I grew tired of switching the Garmin from one bike to the other. Needless to say, the Wahoo far exceeded my expectations. First, the set up was so easy! I was hooked up to the cadence and the speed sensors in no time. Then the buttons and functions are easy to run through and intuitive. Finally, the computer also looks good. I enjoy this computer so much, I’m tempted to switch it to my “special” bike!

Great Display, glad I switched

After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.
