  • BUILT WELL, BUT SEAT IS HARD
Color: Black Size: Standard
I just received my new Z51 Shift model rollator/transport chair today and I'm giving my initial impressions. It's a well-thought-out design for a very useful dual-purpose chair. I researched every similar style dual purpose chair I could find online and this seems to have more great features and sturdier construction than any other I found for the price - the trade off is it's a bit heavy. I especially like the much sturdier wider, treaded wheels. I can see why most of the reviews are so positive. I made mental notes from a helpful reviewer who said it's easier to make tight turns if the 'pusher' taps one brake: right brake to turn right, left brake to turn left. And I can see why it's important to keep the swivel wheels turned forward over uneven surfaces, otherwise you could put undo sideways pressure on the wheel yoke and risk it breaking, as some have done. I guess we can't expect it to steer or push like a grocery cart, with our loved one in it. The weight is more vertical than a cart. And, with those 8" rear wheels, we also can't expect it to handle like a standard wheelchair either. But most folks will have no trouble at all. I did have one frustrating problem putting it together though. At least at first look, the 2 larger swiveling wheels appear to be interchangeable for either side but they are not. Their plastic fittings into the chair legs have a brass insert on only one side, which I found out must be facing the chair's inward side so the knob can screw all the way in from the outside. There's nothing in the instructions for this, which made for very frustrating trial and error. Regarding assembly: As others have mentioned, it would be VERY helpful if they would label the various wheels and handles with stickers, with corresponding stickers on the matching sides of their mated parts: A to A, B to B and so on. But then, you only have to assemble it once, and you're done. One drawback so far: Be aware that the "cushioned" seat is very hard. So for now, I'm using a cushion on top. The hooking of the foot rests onto the sides is fussy and a hinge arrangement would be nice instead. But some folks might want to use it as a rollator without the footrests with their added weight. All that said, I look forward to a bit more freedom to get around and get out more easily with the help of this wonderful chair and my 'pushy' friends. Update 2-1-25: BE AWARE. Took the chair for a 3-hour outing and found some challenges. Yes, as other reviewers have mentioned, it is difficult to push a seated person over even small transitions like from cement onto asphalt. Even more difficult if there's even a tiny bit of an incline involved. Also, I'm 5'2" with narrow shoulders and the handles made for a very tight fit and zero wiggle room. Wish the seat back was a bit higher for better support and chair balance. ... show more

  • Wonderfully useful
Color: Red Size: Standard
Chose this model for the functionality: the ability to give my mother a seat in public, as she needs one frequently, while providing walking assistance with the option of a transport chair. I compared this to another brand which, shockingly, had no footrests when modified to be a transport chair. It does fold very easily, but I suspect we are unable to fold it down all the way because we use the basket as storage for the footrests. I really wish there was an option to just fold the footrests up or down on the chair, so as not to sacrifice cargo space in the basket for when we don’t need them, but we make do. When folded, it’s possible that unit takes up an entire trunk. I drive a medium-sized SUV and because there are other smaller items in my cargo area, I need to remove the brake handles in order to close the hatch when transporting this. They come out very easily, at least. It lays on top of every item that is already in my rear cargo area because otherwise it would be difficult to fit things, but we stowed this on top of several bags of luggage for a family of five, a bucket of toys, and a small cooler when going on vacation. It maneuvers easily and doesn’t take a lot of strength to push on cement or a shopping mall floor (the two places we’ve used this). Assembly was indeed quick and straightforward, and the construction of these pieces seem very sturdy. No complaints on quality. These specific features are easy to take for granted but extremely noticeable when they are lacking, so I’d like to stress how good these are. I also appreciate how the wheels are not inflatable, and how sturdy the footrest feels when hooked into the frame for use. In general I would choose this again despite the criticisms. ... show more

  • Best Wheelchair and walker combo .
Color: Champaign Size: Standard
This wheelchair and walker combo is amazing . The assembly was easy but did take my sister to set it up. The gold color very beautiful. The wheelchair and walker combo is very sturdy . Has good brakes and they lock when needed . It just perfect to use and travel with . My mom who is 80 years old love it. Just the arm rest are hard so I do recommend putting a soft armrest when using it . It so compact but you do need to have like a small suv truck for this walker /wheelchair to fit. Or your car trunk should be roomy and have space if is a sedan . Best investment if you have an elderly parent or require a medical equipment for you can be mobile . ... show more

  • The Best Walker/Transport Chair
Color: Red Size: Standard
Ordering a chair online can be quite challenging, especially when you can't physically test it beforehand. I purchased this chair for my godfather, who is 87 years old, stands 6 feet 1 inch tall, and weighs 230 pounds. My primary concern was whether the chair would provide the necessary stability and build quality to support him. The main reason for choosing this walker was to ensure he could use it for mobility while also having the option to sit down when he felt fatigued. Given our frequent travels, it was essential to select a transport chair that was both functional and reliable. We recently took this chair with us to Hawaii, and I am thrilled to report that it exceeded my expectations in terms of stability. As a registered nurse, I've had experience with many different chairs, and I can confidently say this one is among the best. One of the standout features is the deep, rich red color, which my godfather, a retired firefighter, appreciates. The aesthetics are complemented by the chair's solid construction; it easily supports his weight without any wobbling. Additionally, the brakes and safety features are exceptional, providing peace of mind during use. Overall, this chair has proven to be a perfect blend of style and functionality for my godfather's needs. I also like the fact that there are handles on each side ( when it’s in the chair position) so he can lean on those handles when he tries to stand up. It makes it much easier.. The height of the chair is very appropriate and can be adjustable as far as the handles. I like the fact that there is a storage basket underneath the chair which makes it easy to store some things. Definitely a solid purchase. I would highly recommend it to anybody who is looking for that perfect all in one package ... show more

  • Better than a normal rollator but middle of the road as an "all terrain" type
Color: Red Size: Standard
Decent, not fabulous. My mom liked the solid seat. The brake cables stick out and poke her in the shoulders, as do the hard plastic thumb rests on the handles. A redesign to eliminate those jabbing you in the back would improve this rollator a lot. We gave this rollator a real test. We took it on dirt trails, gravel trails, up steep hills, etc. using it in the wheelchair function. Rider weighs 185 pounds, well below the weight limit, but she felt pretty squished in between the handles. Due to the front wheel forks being plastic, they bent and twisted and we thought the forks were going to snap under the strain of navigating the rough terrain several times, but they held. Easy to fold and open. Easy to add/remove leg rests. The arm rests are hard plastic, short (not comfy), and do not fold down. It does not fold up very compactly compared to other similar type rollators, which made it kind of a pain fitting it in places to store it. We used zip ties to hold the brake cables tightly against the frame to prevent snagging them on bushes. Hard to very hard to push wheelchair on rough terrain, of course, but a strong man was able to do it. Rider did have to stand up and walk at times, as the plastic wheel forks could not navigate ruts (the trailhead sign read "ADA accessible" but we found that to be questionable). We had a wonderful trip exploring some National parks and loved being able to include our elderly, outdoor enthusiast mom on many of our hikes. If the rollator had a longer wheelbase and larger, thicker tires it would be have great. (FYI, there is one out there that has those features, metal forks, and similar in price.) ... show more

  • Excellent durability and portability
Color: Blue Size: Standard
Got this for my senior mom for a trip to Europe. Although she doesn’t typically use mobility aids, she has a rollator for extended walking on excursions so she can sit to rest. Since our trip would include extensive walking for 2 weeks we got this since it has feee rests and was advertised as all-terrain with front wheels that are larger than most other items of this type. I also saw a review where a woman used this on cobblestones without issue so I took a chance. This was excellent! It was extremely easy and quick to assemble and it was easy to transport on the plane, ship and taxis since it collapses and the foot rests for easily into the basket. I did attach address labels with our phone number to the foot rests and rollator as well as get a luggage strap to secure it when it was collapsed because it doesn’t maintain the folded position if moved. In several taxis we had to unscrew/remove the front wheels because the vehicle capacities are smaller in Europe…but most of the time we only had to lower the handles to make it fit. The only concern we had when collapsing the rollator was the brake lines. They would stick out and could get caught on things if not careful, including when raising the handles. The included Velcro helped hold it against the frame but there was slack when folding/lowering the handles. We pushed my mom frequently to save time and when the surface was uneven (which was often). The front wheels rotate but if they weren’t turned in the forward position it would be difficult to move the rollator at first. If someone would just forcefully push it, I think it could break the front wheel. This is especially true on uneven surfaces—the cobblestones at Italian sites (Colosseum, Pompeii, old streets, etc) were difficult at times to navigate. While pushing my mom if there was a larger gap, my husband and I would each have to lift up on the front wheel while he pushed the chair over the hump/divot in the pavement. This happened on thresholds on sidewalks and streets but we eventually figured out that we could cross at an angle. The foot rests were quick and simple to attach and take off. Be careful to always put them in the basket under the seat after removing them so you don’t forget them at a restaurant! Even with the foot rests in the basket there was room to store other items. Also be careful when turning the chair if the person’s heels aren’t fully on the foot rests. My mom would sometimes have her feet closer to her so the wheels would hit her when trying to turn. We eventually figured out what she was doing and she isn’t fragile but it could be jarring to others and was a nuisance at best. I think it would have been nice if the angle/length of the foot rests were adjustable, but the simplicity was a huge plus so it is just something to be aware of. On level surfaces it was extremely easy to push my mom. On cobblestones or slanted sidewalks it could be challenging and at times a workout in itself! I don’t know if a standard wheelchair would have been easier to push in these circumstances but my mom is fortunate to only need this rollator and it was far less cumbersome than a WC. We highly recommend this rollator and are extremely satisfied with its ability to easily and safely transport my mom on our big trip. Without it we wouldn’t have been able to cover so much area and see so many sites! ... show more
