I own and use several Viltrox products and find that all are of high quality and very reliable. When I needed a smaller, more portable on-camera LED light I did not hesitate to buy the Viltrox RETRO 08X. It has a sturdy metal frame that is equipped with two 1/4” threat mounts so it can be mounted on the camera or tripod in either Portrait or Landscape Mode. It also comes with a practical hot shoe adaptor. It has a 6000 mAmp. battery that can be charged through a USB-C connector; a short charging cable is included as an accessory. The battery has enough capacity for lengthy shooting sessions. The Viltrox RETRO 08X has a wide selection of Color Modes and Brightness settings which can be selected and set by two buttons and a two-position toggle for brightness. There is also a Smartphone App “WeeLite Pro” which provides that all functions of the light can be controlled remotely, from a Smartphone. The smartphone App allows over 100 different lights to be controlled separately via the selection of channels and groups. I am doing some macro photography and use the Viltrox lights for effect illumination. In this scenario the camera is close to the object and to avoid disturbing the camera, the remote operation of the light is very desirable. In conclusion, I find the Viltrox RETRO 08X very versatile and its superior battery live important for my use.

I need a light for vlogs. I own Viltrox pro lenses and know they make high quality products, so I decided to try the Retro 08X 8W RGB fill light. When I opened the package I was immediately impressed by the premium feel. The low profile aluminum case has a nice black vinyl textured back and a small LED display, giving it a retro look that matches the camera’s handgrip. The aluminum case matches nicely with the silver top plate on my Sony A7C2. The frame has two 1/4” threaded mounts (on bottom and side) allows easy horizontal/vertical mounting on the hot shoe (or cold shoe). It is a very nice that a high quality hot shoe adapter is included the box. Charging time for the 6000mAh battery is about 6 hours with the included USB-C cable. On a full charge the light panel easily lasts a whole evening. The side buttons controls brightness and color modes (CCT, HSI, RGBWY, COL (color chip presets), and SCENE effects). I most enjoy controlling the Retro 08X with the WeeylitePro app (the color picker is a lot of fun!). The app can control a group of up to 6 lights per channel, something I plan to do for ambient lighting. Bluetooth pairing is very easy. This 5” LED light panel is portable, yet big enough to provide a soft light when mounted off camera. Viltrox delivers good quality and value again and I am very happy with this purchase!

I'm impressed with the stylish and durable build quality of the light. It feels premium with that nice looking leather like finish on the back, great button placement and comes with both horizontal and vertical mounting slots. Its compact size makes it incredibly portable, easily fitting into my camera bag without adding significant weight. This light has many different lighting modes to choose from and each allows you to easily set brightness and other color properties. I use CCT (2500-8500K range) and color (RGB/HSI) modes the most. The brightness dial lets me dial in the setting that I need the most, I found this light very capable even in light environment, to get that additional backdrop. Battery is really good and seem to match the 8hour at 50% specification. I've gone through many hours of tests at various brightness levels and haven't had to charge it in a week that I've had it. I use wide range of Viltrox lenses on my Sony and Fuji cameras, the quality of those are superb (just read the reviews) and this battery pack doesn't disappoint with same level of quality as well.

I’m trying to figure out what type of photography/photographer would benefit from this light which, fittingly, is dubbed a “retro” fill light. It’s retro in several respects. First, it’s metal. Real metal. Measuring a compact 4 1/2 x 7/8 x 2 5/8 inches, it weights nearly half a pound. It has a similar contour and dimpled leathery/rubberized back panel as seen on folding bellows Polaroids and other vintage cameras and accessories. In an era when the most modest imaging editing programs can effortlessly blend colors digitally, The VILTROX is all about tweaking the lighting to meticulously color balance the initial capture. For many casual photographers, critical color balancing is a nonstarter. As for professionals, the agencies and clients I have worked with over the years never specified a 5600K over a 5700K. And those whose work demanded such precision likely would have preferred I deliver a pure white slate that they could dial in as they chose. In the studio, I mostly used LED video lights when I needed a continuous light source. They had a more than 50 percent higher output than the 8W maximum power of the VILTROX and were less expensive. An output of 8W would be useful for tabletop close-ups and headshots, but would be stretching it for much else. The frosted front element of the light offers very modest diffusion. Unfortunately, with no need to attach colored gels, there is also no way to attach a diffusion screen. A companion app is available for controlling the light via Bluetooth. It’s a convenience for casual use, but fussing with connectivity and a second device is the last thing I’d want to do in the middle of a shoot. For that, a remote could be handy. One is available--sold separately. The light comes with a 19-inch USB Type-C recharging cable and instruction sheet. Fully charged, it’s good for a respectable 3 1/2 hours operating time at 100 percent power. Also included is a hot shoe foot to 1/4-inch male post adapter for attaching the light vertically or horizontally to either of its two threaded connectors. Mechanically, one orientation might work better than the other, but in terms of aesthetics, for such a small screen one would have been plenty. There is no such thing as a bad light source, only light that does or does not effectively serve a given purpose. I’m certain there are shooters who will find ways to put this light to good use. Others won’t.
