Fantastic lens! VILTROX just keeps getting better and better. I would give it a 4.5 rather than a 5 just because the minimum focus distance could be shorter, but that's a minor point. Solid build quality, compact, lightweight and razor sharp. Nothing fancy: no Fn button, no MF/AF switch, no Aperture ring. But I am happy to sacrifice those things for size and weight. My favorite "nifty 50" over the years has been the Sony Zeiss 55mm released 12 years ago with the first Sony a7. It has been one of the best, quality lens I've owned; producing beautiful images with excellent color. Its initial cost around $1,000. Recently I had reason to test the Viltrox 50mm f2.0. I was impressed. At $199, I was even more impressed. How could it be this good at this price. No bells and whistles, just solid build with excellent glass and very sharp wide open. I bought this Viltrox 50mm f/2 for my Sony ZV-1 and I'm truly amazed by the quality it offers for the price. The autofocus is fast and quite accurate, even in low light. Sharpness at the center is very good from f/2, and improves further by stopping down the aperture a bit. The design is compact and lightweight, ideal for taking on outings without sacrificing quality. I've used it for both portraits and street photography, and it performs very well. The construction feels solid, with a metallic finish that gives a sense of durability. Without a doubt, an excellent option if you're looking for a bright prime lens without spending a fortune. I have never owned a "nifty fifty" before, so didnt really know what to expect from it. I have a 105mm macro, a 150mm 1.8 prime, a 70-180, and a 150-600 and so after selling my 35mm i thought this lens would fit nicely with what i have. So far the optics quality is quite good, rendering from my Sony A7RIV. The autofocus is good, but not sports quality, though maybe that's more because of my landscape body camera then the lens itself. Overall, it is quiet, easy to use, a value for the money, and has the ability to be versatile on a backpacking trip. ... show more

The lens sits very snug on the z mount. It also had some defective machining probably which means the lock pin on the camera doesn't lock properly without having to wiggle the lens multiple times to make it set properly on the camera. Besides that the lens misses on autonomous about 25% of the times. I updated the firmware which did not help with focus. The images when good are good but the focus is hit or miss. I also own the 85 mm evo and that one is undeniably a good lens but the 50 mm has been a disappointment. The reason I still gave it 3 stars is when the images are in focus they are good and the price is good for f2.0. ... show more

There are lots of videos out there showing how great this lens is. And I can confirm they are correct. Image Quality: - very sharp - great color rendition - nice bokeh that isn't "clumpy" - it looks nice and smooth at F2 - compact and sturdy build Cons: - Plastic body. But at this price, that's expected. This lens offers an amazing value for the quality of images it can produce at this price point. If you make money as a pro photographer or videographer, you can afford the top-end lenses. But if you're starting out, or a hobbyist, this lens can offer some compelling results for a fraction of the price. ... show more

I love this lens! The quality for the price on my a7r ii is a huge. Very crisp for the price. The AF is pretty decent speed, and for photography the AF doesn't make a ton of noise. The size is great, and easy to carry around with me. The color accuracy is a huge step up from using my Sony kit lens from my nex 7 I was using while waiting to find a nice budget lens. The quality is pretty nice for plastic. I was worried coming from metal bodies. I wish it had weather resistance, but for the price it wasn't a deal breaker as I mostly use it in antique stores, and sometimes street. Added a picture from street shot. ... show more
