  • Shockingly good for the price
Size: 35/1.2 Nikon Z
This lens delivers real f/1.2 performance — sharp subject, smooth falloff, and excellent subject separation — without the $2,500+ price tag. Center sharpness is strong even wide open, and stopped down it becomes very crisp across the frame. Autofocus is fast and accurate on Nikon Z bodies, and the build feels solid and professional. Color and contrast are very good, and the rendering is flattering for portraits and lifestyle work. If you shoot people, low light, or want shallow depth of field without paying premium-brand prices, this lens is an outstanding value. ... show more

  • A beautiful, exotic lens for Nikon Z-mounts
Size: 135/1.8 Nikon Z
This lens is Viltrox's top of the line, and it shows. All the surfaces are durable, functional, well thought out. The lens is heavy--a huge amount of glass here--about as much as I want to hand-hold. With that in mind, I wish it had some provision for a tripod mount like Nikon's 200mm f2 & pretty much any 300mm f2.8. You will absolutely need some sort of grip on your camera to avoid dropping the rig. The lighted, digital aperture/distance scale is useful & attractive, but I think I'd prefer an analog aperture ring/scale; we'll see how much of an impact running this lens has on the battery life of my Nikon Zfc. My initial opinion is that this lens is sharp, and color rendition looks good. It focuses very quickly, but at this focal length the depth of field can get incredibly shallow so one needs to be mindful of what it's actually focusing on. It features a focus-limit switch with several settings along with a couple of function buttons. I'll certainly use those. One anomaly I discovered is that my Windows 10 workstation failed to recognize the lens when I plugged in the USB to check on the firmware. My Viltrox 75mm f1.2 lens was recognized immediately, and the update was a simple drag-and-drop. I discovered that the 135mm f1.8 update needs to be accomplished through the Viltrox app on my phone. That worked well; the 75mm f1.2 lens is not connected in that way. The 135mm f1.8 is a specialized tool for those times when I simply can't get any closer to my subject, don't want to crop during editing, or want its unique optical effects. The reader might conclude that I've gone down the rabbit hole of fast, prime lenses rather than zooms, which is true. Zoom lenses that start around f4 and run up to f6.3 or so just seem to be trying to do too much. Most of the Nikkor Z-lenses appear physically larger & slower than their F-mount counterparts. If I'm going to carry a big lens, it needs to be special in some way. I think the Viltrox 135mm f1.8 is. Also, my impression is that DSLR mirrors are brighter than digital mirrorless viewfinders. Having a faster lens on a Z-mount camera is worth the tradeoffs in portability, convenience, and expense for me. The photo below was taken with a Nikon Zfc on FINE on a tripod at 1/60 f8 at an effective focal length of 202mm. ... show more

  • Extremely Sharp Lens with Great Value, Minor Autofocus Trade-Offs
Size: 135/1.8 Nikon Z
This VILTROX 135mm f/1.8 Z lens is extremely sharp! Honestly sharper than I expected. The level of detail it produces is impressive, especially when paired with my Nikon Z6 III. From a pure image quality standpoint, it delivers excellent results that easily compete with much more expensive glass. In real-world use, the lens performs very well. I’ve used it for a variety of shooting situations, including fast-moving subjects traveling at high speeds (around 100 mph or more). Even in those challenging conditions, the autofocus performed reasonably well for a third-party lens. Out of roughly 10 shots in fast action scenarios, maybe 2 would come out slightly out of focus. While not perfect, that’s still a solid hit rate considering the difficulty of the subject matter. I do hope future firmware updates improve autofocus tracking and consistency, because the potential is definitely there. Color rendition is another strong point. The images come out with natural tones and good contrast without needing heavy correction in post-processing. Skin tones, in particular, look clean and balanced, which makes it a very usable lens for portraits as well as general photography. The lens does have some weight to it, but it is not overly heavy for what it offers. Given the fast f/1.8 aperture and optical quality, the size and weight feel reasonable. It’s not something I would call lightweight, but it is still manageable for extended shooting sessions if you’re used to carrying professional gear. One thing that might concern new users is the slight rattling noise when the lens is not in use. At first, I thought something might be wrong, but this is actually normal and related to internal components for Image Stabilization. It does not affect performance, but it’s something to be aware of so you don’t mistake it for a defect. Build quality overall feels solid, though I do approach third-party lenses with some caution based on past experience. I previously owned another Viltrox lens that eventually stopped working after a few years. Because of that, I was initially hesitant to try another one. However, given the price point and the strong specifications of this model, I decided to give it another chance. So far, I’m glad I did. The value for money here is one of the strongest aspects of this lens. Compared to other 135mm f/1.8 options on the market, especially native Z-mount lenses, this one is significantly more affordable while still delivering excellent sharpness and usable autofocus performance. That price difference alone makes it very appealing for photographers who want high-quality results without spending a premium. In terms of usability, it integrates well with the Nikon Z system, and aside from slightly slower autofocus compared to native Nikon lenses, it performs reliably in most scenarios. It’s especially strong for portraits, detailed subject work, and controlled action environments where you can give the autofocus a bit more time to lock on. I am still actively testing the lens in different environments and lighting conditions. If any issues come up over time, I will update my review accordingly. For now, though, it has exceeded my expectations in terms of sharpness and overall image quality, with only minor compromises in autofocus speed and tracking consistency. ... show more

  • Great lens
Size: 35/1.2 Nikon Z
Took this lens out over the weekend and it was amazing. Had no issues with autofocus. It worked absolutely great with my camera. It is a little heavy in weight but worth it. I would highly recommend!

  • Excellent lens, especially for the money.
Size: 135/1.8 Sony FE
Takes wonderful photos and gorgeous bokeh at less than half the cost of the Sony. I love my Sony lenses, but this 135 I knew was not going to be used very often, so I kept putting off getting it. You get used to the aperture ring issue of it not having distinct stops to the far left and far right, so that becomes a non-issue. Note, the lens elements make some clunking sounds when the lens is not powered up and this can be disconcerting, but this is normal behavior of the lens. ... show more
