This lens delivers real f/1.2 performance — sharp subject, smooth falloff, and excellent subject separation — without the $2,500+ price tag. Center sharpness is strong even wide open, and stopped down it becomes very crisp across the frame. Autofocus is fast and accurate on Nikon Z bodies, and the build feels solid and professional. Color and contrast are very good, and the rendering is flattering for portraits and lifestyle work. One word summary: Amazing. Two word summary: Mind-blowing. This lens has officially replaced the famed Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN as my go-to prime. Interestingly, the Viltrox 35mm f/1.2 LAB is approximately the same length and weight as my old Sigma + FTZ adapter combo, but the increased girth changes the ergonomics for the better. The center of gravity sits right at the lens mount, instinctively leading me to support the rig by the lens barrel, which feels incredibly stable on my Nikon Z6II. The performance is where this lens truly disrupts the market. The autofocus is instant—honestly, I find it snappier than my native Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 S. In the evening, the light gathering is superb, and the bokeh at f/1.2 is creamy, surpassing the rendering I used to get from the Sigma. Optically, it’s a triumph; vignetting and LOCA are nearly non-observable, with zero green fringing even wide open. What really seals the deal is the "future-proofing." With the built-in USB-C port and Bluetooth connectivity, I can manage firmware updates and lens settings directly via the Viltrox app. This is a huge confidence booster given the current Nikon/Viltrox legal landscape. At a sub-$1000 price point, this is the only attainable f/1.2 of this caliber—a total no-brainer for any serious hobbyist or pro. ... show more

    • An optical tour de force, let down by a few details
Size: 35/1.2 Z
Optically beautiful lens, but this lens causes horizontal banding at higher ISO, at least on the Z6III. Likely due to its focus motor design causing EMI/RFI to the sensor. Otherwise, it's fantastically and beautifully sharp and well constructed. In no way is this a small or light lens, but it's doable for f/1.2. I'd implore you to actually consider if you really need f/1.2, and I'd argue that in today's photo landscape it's unnecessary; given that f/1.4 and f/1.8 options are plentiful, cheap, and light; combined with the ISO performance of modern Z bodies means you pretty much don't need f/1.2. For daytime photos, this lens is great. For low-light, I would say it's just average, due to the banding. For video work, I would not choose this lens. It has pretty noticeable focus breathing, and does not properly align with the autofocus speed setting on Nikon Z bodies, meaning the speed at which it racks focus is too fast, even on the slowest setting. ... show more

I waited almost a year for this lens to be released for the Nikon Z cameras. I am beyond happy for this purchase. It is exactly as described. Keep in mind all the research has been done. This is an excellent purchase for the photographer who doesn’t want to break the bank in a professional lens.
