Top Amazon Reviews

  • An excellent buy for a high quality wide angle lens
Size: AF 16/1.8 Z
People probably get their reviews of camera equipment from photography sites, and then consider whether to buy from Amazon. I bought this here because I had accumulated a lot of points, and I decided to get myself a present. The selkler is the manufacturer (Viltrox), and it came well packaged and quickly. I am extremely happy with this lens. It is sharp, it is very "fast" (at f1.8, it can shoot at much higher speeds with equivalent ISOs than most lenses near its price), and it has surprisingly little distortion (vertical straight lines on the edges of photos do not "lean in"; they are vertical as they should be). There is modest vignetting (images are slightly darker in the edges) but this is easily corrected with editing software. The lens is good for landscapes and wide group shots. I use it on a Nikon Z8 which has so many pixels that I can pick out whatever smaller part of the photo I like and enlarge. That doesn't defeat the purpose of having an extreme wide angle; it just increases my flexibility when this lens is on the camera. I have just barely tried using it to take night sky photos. It captured the stars well (you need a fast lens to have a short exposure to avoid "star trails"), but I will need more practice/experience to see if I can do the amazing Milky Way Galaxy shots that I have seen from others. The lens is sturdy and feels well made. I got it on sale for 20% off, but it's standard price is still very reasonable. ... show more

  • A beautiful, exotic lens for Nikon Z-mounts
Size: AF 135/1.8 Z
This lens is Viltrox's top of the line, and it shows. All the surfaces are durable, functional, well thought out. The lens is heavy--a huge amount of glass here--about as much as I want to hand-hold. With that in mind, I wish it had some provision for a tripod mount like Nikon's 200mm f2 & pretty much any 300mm f2.8. You will absolutely need some sort of grip on your camera to avoid dropping the rig. The lighted, digital aperture/distance scale is useful & attractive, but I think I'd prefer an analog aperture ring/scale; we'll see how much of an impact running this lens has on the battery life of my Nikon Zfc. My initial opinion is that this lens is sharp, and color rendition looks good. It focuses very quickly, but at this focal length the depth of field can get incredibly shallow so one needs to be mindful of what it's actually focusing on. It features a focus-limit switch with several settings along with a couple of function buttons. I'll certainly use those. One anomaly I discovered is that my Windows 10 workstation failed to recognize the lens when I plugged in the USB to check on the firmware. My Viltrox 75mm f1.2 lens was recognized immediately, and the update was a simple drag-and-drop. I discovered that the 135mm f1.8 update needs to be accomplished through the Viltrox app on my phone. That worked well; the 75mm f1.2 lens is not connected in that way. The 135mm f1.8 is a specialized tool for those times when I simply can't get any closer to my subject, don't want to crop during editing, or want its unique optical effects. The reader might conclude that I've gone down the rabbit hole of fast, prime lenses rather than zooms, which is true. Zoom lenses that start around f4 and run up to f6.3 or so just seem to be trying to do too much. Most of the Nikkor Z-lenses appear physically larger & slower than their F-mount counterparts. If I'm going to carry a big lens, it needs to be special in some way. I think the Viltrox 135mm f1.8 is. Also, my impression is that DSLR mirrors are brighter than digital mirrorless viewfinders. Having a faster lens on a Z-mount camera is worth the tradeoffs in portability, convenience, and expense for me. The photo below was taken with a Nikon Zfc on FINE on a tripod at 1/60 f8 at an effective focal length of 202mm. ... show more

  • Excellent lens. Tack sharp. Great for Milk Way/Night Sky Photography
Size: AF 16/1.8 Z
Excellent lens. I use this on my Nikon z7II and z6 cameras for night sky photography. It is well built and tack sharp. If I had to pick a complaint it would be the screen on the lens is not ideal while working at night. I did program one of the buttons to turn the screen off. I would prefer a physical button for this ...but the custom function works OK. The Viltrox app worked well to connect with the lens and change settings. I would like to be able to turn the screen off until turned back on ...but can live with the function button as the lens is excellent otherwise. ... show more

  • Great lens, incredible value.
Size: AF 135/1.8 Z
Great lens, incredible value. You can look up reviews of the lens that talk about it's sharpness, whisper quiet autofocus and smooth bokeh. The item was delivered fairly quickly - although the DHL tracking didn't update until it was actually delivered (not really a critique on the product itself, just in case it happens to you). The lens itself is hefty, it's 1.337 kg or roughly 3lbs. It uses Viltrox's HyperVCM autofocus (a voice coil motor), when the camera is powered off this will absolutely shake, rattle, and jiggle around inside the lens. When the camera is powered on and the VCM is engaged, it's just like any other lens and feels solid. You can adjust the function of the buttons and the electronic aperture ring using the custom functions in your camera, but for some button functions or to turn off the screen (which is not useful to me), you'll need to download their app and configure the lens it using a bluetooth connection (admittedly this was fairly painless). I ordered this lens on day 1 and didn't find any other issues or any need to update firmware (yet). ... show more

  • Wonderful for astrophotography and a tremendous bargain
Size: AF 16/1.8 Z
The lens is well made, feature rich, sharp from corner to corner and is a tremendous bargain for under $500. When I first attached the lens, my Nikon Z7ii could not detect the aperture. I turned the camera off and reattached the lens and it worked. My lens came in today and I have attached a few images from it this evening. ... show more

  • Very satisfied
Size: AF 135/1.8 Z
Very good built. Somewhat heavy, but expected for a prime lens. Focus is on time and very fast.
