  • truly outstanding
Color: Black
In my hunt for the perfect travel backpack. this is the winner. It's modern & trim. It's VERY spacious for its size. It's uniquely designed for the underseat location where your air travel "personal item" usually goes. The highlights that make me rave about it after using it for 15+ air round-trips (including ultra-long-hauls, mileage runs, extreme weather conditions, long drives before or after): * It's as big as an underseat bag can get. No airline has complained about it, it always fits under the seat. * Modern look. No bits & pieces that say it was originally a hiking design. No extra-wide mouth for your sleeping bag or whatever. Smooth, quality-looking material. * It's as high capacity as a bag this size can be. The top loading design (not a U-shaped "mouth" like your highschool packs) means you can fill it ALL the way up. There's no internal dividers in the main compartment. No wasted space. Pack it full however you want. * There's a couple of internal pockets there. AND there's a 2nd compartment which has padding for your back, a slot for your laptop, a space for a tablet but large enough for delicate page-sized documents, AND an additional space that can hold high value or easy-access items (it's padded and separate from everything else). * Flip-top for small items has a zippered pouch, two mesh pouches, and can hold additional loose items. It's very well designed for travel odds-and-ends. (wallet, phone, keys, passport, etc all go in here) * Very tough-- no catches or pulls after hundreds of times going in/out of underseats, overhead bins, trunks, luggage carts, etc, etc. No staining or damage. It still looks nice and I haven't tried to baby it. * The pack is really made to go under-seat. If you put it in face down, the zipper is just right to to get to your laptop & tablet (and battery pack, I keep that in the extra space). The flip-top will flip towards you (no spills). With no loose straps & nylon body, it slides easily. But you can organize so you can get to everything you need without pulling the whole pack out (often impossible for normal sized people in modern coach class). * Two full-zip bottle holders can segregate small items but perfectly hold 500ml bottles. They work well for slim reusable bottles like Kleen Kanteen. * In a common narrowbody cabin like 737 or A321, there's enough room to squeeze adult feet on each side of the bag while it's under-seat. (barely, if it's full & bottles loaded) * Carrying it for extended periods is reasonably comfortable and non-sweaty. It fits fine over the handle of 3 roller suitcases I've tried with. It's a grown-up pack for travel & urban situations. The negatives, few as they are: * That big capacity means the pack gets heavy really fast. * That max size means older airline cabin designs (looking at your A319/A320) that have retrofitted electrical boxes under the seats are very tight. You're not going to put your feet in that space while your pack is there. * The top flap flops over if loaded up, which can spill any loose items if the bag was turned the wrong way. * No real "anti-crush" spot for your sunglasses or similar. I load 'em in the top and just remember to not smash the top. * No "split design" for easy x-ray, but I think they assume somebody buying this specialized a bag will have expedited security (eg precheck). * Side water bottle pockets aren't usable if you overfilled the inside of the bag first (the sides aren't structured). * The bottom is not very padded. I travel frequently, mostly carry-on, lots of connections. The "personal item" carry-on like this backpack is often your most important luggage-- you interact it with it the most, it carries your valuables or fragile items, AND that's where your snacks go. I've tried other packs since, and currently own a half dozen other designs (including ones I carry hiking, for long city walk-arounds, tiny ones for airline bulkhead seating, etc). This one is so good that it raises my estimation of Victorinox as a whole and I would happily buy another. Although I don't have to because it shows NO signs of wear despite some pretty extreme use. Highly recommended with no reservations. (my highest personal rating) ... show more

  • Great bag while looking so cleann. (In depth review)
Color: Black
Unfortunately I received the wrong bag. But amazon was quick to help me fix that and I find it pretty rare I guess. Regardless, I got my hands on one right before a trip so it was a perfect time to use it. I started my search when my old Swiss Gear bag was stolen in Athens. Much to my dismay because that bag was the most durable bag of my life. In college I went through 1 a semester (not exaggerating) till I stumbled on that one. Boom, 6 years later it was still holding up like a champ (minus deal-withable-wear-and-tear). Well as heart-wrought as I was to part with my old backpack, I took the chance to "upgrade", but insisted on staying within the brand... which is apparently owned by Victorinox. So that's an upgrade right? What drew me to this bag? Those cleannn elegant lines that most backpacks lack. The few that have them are always so tiny. As someone who is 6'6" and 260lbs I wanted the biggest bag I could find so it doesn't look like a childs bag, But I still wanted it to look great in the office. (While this bag is the best I could find, I wouldn't mind if it was 25% larger... but I'm sure some would find that cumbersome). Lets get to it: Pros: (And there's a good amount sorry) - Cubular shape looks better than the old blob I put on my back, and it also makes things much easier to get in and out of the bag. It also does a decent job staying upright because of it. Especially when not empty. - The "longer" vs "fatter" shape makes sure that you can store it on top of your carry-on and not have it protrude (as you can see in my pictures.) If the carry on fits, they both do. I wasn't even concerned with this until I was traveling and realized how annoying it would be if it were hanging over. Huge plus that I wasn't aware of. (My Samsonite is pretty much the max of southwest's carry on size-limit couldn't find the old picture). - The "trout mouth" is one of the best features imo. Having a reasonable size bag is great and all, but not if it's a pain to get stuff out or in when it's full. - I knew it had a good amount of pockets when I ordered it, but they are all perfectly sized so that you still get a cavern for large or clunky things. Best of both worlds. - I didn't like that the pocket on top looked like an after thought. But as the bag gets used, it relaxes and looks just fine, all while being the most handy pocket on the bag. - Bonus 1, it also fits under southwests seats almost perfectly, when someone can't fit their carryon anywhere and you try to be nice. (I wish I had more in the view of the photo, cause while it portruded... even my hefty self had enough space. (also I think southwest made all their new seats like thinner or something, felt like I had more legroom than normal so maybe that has something to do with it). - Bonus 2, while the straps don't have a place to go, they can slip behind the "carry on hugger" and stay out of the way of getting snagged (check the pictures). Cons: - No travel lock on the zipper. At first I thought I was shortchanged, then I realized that's the loadout of the bag... but at least you get the bottle opener (more valuable to me). (As I learned first hand if someone is taking your stuff, they'll probably just take the whole bag...). So I just keep it in view now. - Could be larger. But honestly, because the volume it has is so organizable, I feel like I fit just as much as my old swissgear (which was technically a bit larger). For example, someone of my stature justtt fit 3 days worth of clothing and one sweater. If I count the clothes I was wearing, that's 4 days and 3 nights including my laptop, tough to complain.) I know it's pricier than my beloved Swiss Gear 1900 replacement would have been, but it looks so much nicer while just having more logical pockets. If it was stolen today, (I'd be livid) but then I'd buy this Victorinox one up again. ... show more

  • The PERFECT backpack for professionals / travelers
Color: Black
From low-priced $20 chinese-made backpacks to the more premium $150 by Samsonite, I like to say that I've tried around 10 various sized and shaped backpacks in the last 2 years. After a LOT of review-reads, including checking the bags in-store of similar priced brands like Wenger and Thule, physically in stores in countries like UAE, South Africa and Turkey - I did my legwork and my research. For my needs, my life-style and my travel habits the Victorinox Almont Professional was the only backpack that achieved my requirement: big enough to throw anything in, easy-access compartments, looks good and stands tall. I have a pair of Sennheiser headphones in a hardcase and this takes up quite some volume (which was my complaint with so many bags before). The backpack does not "tighten up" other pockets when you fill up with your stuff which is awesome. With lots of compartments, a detachable cable organizer, a built-in multi-tool and the easy-access flip-top I really need to decide where to put what! It's got all kinds of pockets. The laptop+tablet compartment has the soft lining and it does not feel 'average' - it really feels safe for your computer. It does not have a very 'premium' feel to it on the outside and it's just a plain black backpack but that's OK in my opinion as when you're on a budget it's not important to have all-leather or suede finishing. My backpacks will see all kinds of weather - from desert sands to ice rain - and it needs to survive which is what I am expecting. I would have loved to put the "Thule Ocean blue" color in parts on it but like i said, It's not a huge deal. I was counting the days till this was delivered to me and then ecstatic when it finally arrived. After I put so much effort personally to hunt for my perfect backpack, I'm really very happy! ... show more
