  • Near Immediate Relief, Now I'm Spoiled for Clean Air
Style: Veva 8000
I did a ton of research on air cleaning systems before buying this unit, and I was prepared to pay 2-3x as much as this unit cost. After all that research, I figured out that the best performance in air filtration is going to come in the form of the simplest unit having (1) a charcoal filter for capturing chemical pollutants, (2) a HEPA filter for capturing airborne particles, (3) a fan for drawing air through the two filters, and (4) a switch or other control for adjusting the fan between of and on. My musings on these considerations follow this review. Bottom line, this unit offers exceptional value relative to the other offerings and does an effective job of cleaning the air. Within a couple of hours of setting this unit up in my living room, my eyes stopped itching and watering, and I did in fact breathe easier. I then relocated it my master bedroom, and it had the same effect within a half hour. My wife actually remarked that the air seemed smoother. We both slept very well and woke up without the usual sore throat from the dry air our furnace pumps out. The nosie ranges from barely audible on the lowest setting to tolerable on the highest setting. Once your air is cleaned up the first time, you won't need the highest setting at all. Finally, the price of replacement filters is low. Now for my research findings: Do not waste your time with UV lamps or electrostatics. They're ineffective at best, and at worst they produce toxic breakdown components - particularly ozone. These additional features add cost and complexity without any real benefit to the home user. Your real concerns are going to be threefold: - Is it sized properly for the room it will be in. This isn't a critical measure either - you've got about 30% margin such that if you buy a unit for a 300 sqft room and your room is actually 400 sqft, it will still work fine. You can't really oversize a unit either. In fact, if you put a large room unit into a small bedroom, your filters will last longer. So if the difference is within the cost of one filter change, then you might as well scale up. And in my research, units sized for bedrooms (150 sqft) are within $20 of large room filters (300 sqft). - How loud is it - this is a critical measure because a filter that's too loud to tolerate will be switched off most of the time, and therefore can't do its job. Noise level might be rated in dB, which isnt' a very good measure. If noise level is given as dBa, that is much better because the "a" means the measure is matched to the sensitivity of the human ear. lower is better - 20-30 dba is practically inaudible. 30-45 dBa is whisper quiet. 45-60 dBa is tolerable background noise. Anything above 60 will annoy you. That being said, some people sleep better with "white noise" in the 45-60 dBa range. - How expensive are the replacement filters. This is a big one. Some manufacturers will sell seemingly fantastic units at a cheap price, but that's because you're going to pay through the nose for replacement filters. As you're shopping, look at the price of replacement filters. A medium sized HEPA filter which needs replacing every 6-8 months ought not be more than $25, while a matched charcoal filter that may need replacement every 2-3 months ought not be more than $4. ... show more

  • Can I give this Six Stars?
Style: Veva 8000
Its just something about fresh air that makes home more comfortable. I live in a basement and I have been starting to struggle with sinuses ever since the weather change. New smells started popping up, mold, dust and all types of basement-ey smells. I dreamt about getting a dyson air purifier, but I just don't have dyson money. I did research and found out that many of the more affordable air purifiers give off radiation (the ones with UV light) and the ionic ones are bad as well. I have little ones running around, so this was not appealing. These things could cause breathing issues, cancers, and who knows what else. When you call the companies to ask them about it, they say its fine. Yeeea, ok, my family won't be their ginea pigs. Anyways... After finding a few options on Amazon, it came down to this one and the Levoit (which was a bit cheaper and on sale). I didnt like that people complained that the Levoit clicked and didnt work sometimes upon arrival. Also, the Levoit was smaller than this one. Additionally, when you look at the reviews, this one has a lower percentage of bad reviews. I also liked how the Veva came with extra filters and suction mounting for elevated surfaces, which is a nice feature with little ones around. Through my research, it seems as thought this unit uses the same technology (activated carbon filters and collects the same size particles) as the dyson. Sure, the dyson has a more complex and state of the art mechanism, but for similar and just as effective technology, I will go for the cheaper option. Fyi, the levoit has carbon filters too, but I liked the reviews on this better. After the Veva arrived, although it was more than the Levoit, I am happy I picked it. The instructions are simple, easy to understand. Some of the things that other reviewers complain about is thoroughly explained right in the manual. For instance, the manual says not to put it up against the wall or any furnishings. TBH, this makes sense to me. This means the entire unit, not just the front (going into the front and going out of the front), is used as a purifier since the air goes straight through the back. This feature doesnt bother me, honestly. I also do not understand some of the reviews where it stated that the Veva did not change air quality. Maybe some people need to do a deep clean of their house or surroundings. It may not get smells that are stuck in furniture and stuff or it may take longer. But as for me, that DAY, a few hours after I plugged in the devise, I could already tell the difference. And I did just perform a deep cleaning of the room while spraying a tea tree oil mixture last week. Maybe this had something to do with it? I also like how the vents on the machine are not too big so that little fingers could not get stuck in it. To wrap up, this was a great buy. When one walks into my apartment now, it doesn't smell like a basement, it smells like a fresh home. Honestly, the air seems fresher in here than it does outside. Kinda as fresh as a hospital. Yes, I had to pay more than the Levoit, but I think it will do better in the long run. Anyone considering this item, take into consideration, the type of smells or issues you are dealing with in your dwelling, the size (I have a pretty small space), and I would recommend before buying any air purifier to do a deep cleaning to kinda "reset" the room. ... show more

  • Effective air purifier
Style: Veva 8000
This unit works well, after a few days on high in my bedroom I see a noticeable reduction in the amount of dust and junk floating around in the air, and the filter itself has caught quite a bit of dust. No fancy features, just on/off and 3 speeds. Noise level is acceptable, the unit does hum quite loudly on speeds 2 and 3, and slightly on 1. But if you can find a corner to stick it in and leave it on low it shouldn't be very audible, it certainly isn't silent, but its not terrible. My main complaints come from the design. Blowing air out the back makes placement a little odd, you can't put it right up against a wall unless you turn it sideways. The handle to pick it up is a bit of a joke, its small and slick and easy to drop, just grab it by the base to move it around. Overall I would recommend this for a low cost way to control the dust in a small home or apartment, despite some design flaws it does what it's supposed to do and won't break the bank. ... show more
