I bought this to replace a smaller stone molcajete that I had because I wanted a larger capacity and different material. I also wanted something less porous and/or a darker color, so that it wouldn’t be discolored by different chilies, spices, etc. Cast iron seemed like a good option, and this has worked well for me so far. Pros: -Feels heavy and durable -Effective for a wide range of ingredients -Doesn’t stain/discolor over time -Deep enough to avoid splashes/spills -No risk of stone “grit” in your food Cons -Not dishwasher safe -Cast iron requires maintenance I have used this with single ingredients (spices/herbs, dried chilies, etc.) as well as mixtures (ex. garlic, jalapeno, cilantro, tomato, avocado for guacamole). For the latter, it’s nice that you can use another utensil to mix/stir after grinding and not worry about scratches or damage. You can also heat it safely, if you want to smoke or roast your spices. But it’s important to note that you will need to maintain the cast iron to keep the protective seasoning intact. I clean mine with hot water, dry thoroughly, and then rub with a bit of oil. Occasional heat should also help to maintain the seasoning. Don't soak it or leave it wet after use. Notes for gifting: It comes snugly packaged in a box that does not directly reveal the contents (just the brand name). The mortar and pestle are wrapped separately inside to prevent damage in shipping. The box is plain cardboard (not laminated, no color/images, etc.) and there are no instructions or documentation inside. ... show more

Beautiful mortal and pestle set. It is very beautiful and will look nice on my countertop. It is big enough to mash avacados for guacamole. Also, grinding herbs should be easily done too.

This cast iron mortar is a great addition to your kitchen. It finely grinds whole spices so that when you use them they are of freshest quality. It works better than other wooden ones that I have owned. This will definitely last forever. It is built solid. It also looks attractive enough to display.

I finally purchased one for myself after reading tons of reviews on different ones. I settled on this one and it does not disappoint. It's made with quality. It holds a lot so that I have plenty of room as I try different types of foods to use. It simply rinses well without staining. It like to dry mine. I was wondering if it would need any conditioning after time buy I can figure that out later. It's a great size and weight. It's sturdy. The handle feels good in NY hand. I have been wanting one of these for years but could never find one that screamed me. The size of this for the price is great. The unit is also very sturdy and heavy. The pestle fits comfortably in my hand and I’m sure I’m going to build a stronger hand from this 🤣. The inside is unpolished granite so make sure you take some salt and rice and grind it to remove and loose gravel. This is a great starter Mortar and Pestle and I’ll definitely be coming back to get another one. I’ll update yall after I’ve had this for a month. ... show more
