Coming from someone who enjoys putting things together (Actually, I build cabinets for a living.) I would call this a medium-hard project due to the number of pieces and different types of connections. The instructions seemed pretty clear to me, though, and (almost) all of the parts were clearly labeled. It took me 2 hours using only the tools provided. A couple of things to note: 1) As others have stated, the bottom piece of the cabinet needs to go towards the back instead of flush with the front. Otherwise, the bracket for the wheel won't allow the bottom drawer to close. 2) The lock has to be screwed on in the right direction in order to work. I did strip the wood out for one of the screws on both drawers, but the lock still stays on tight. 3) There are two options for inserting the filing rails. One hole for average size files and one next to it for legal files. I'm only mentioning these things because of the negative reviews. Overall, this turned out to be sturdy and attractive. More than I expected. It seems pretty sturdy and I love the look of the filecabinet with additional shelf. Looks great in my home office. The only thing I didn’t give this 5 stars is I can only lock one cabinet! Lol They forgot to add a notch for the lock to go into on the other one. Besides that goof, for me it was pretty easy to understand the instructions and all tools, hardware and the panels are labeled well. I can see why people thought the bottom filecabinet did not fit is because it happened to me too. I realized I have it flipped and after I corrected that, the bottom file finally closed. Didn’t really need the wheel… Also my files hang fine. There are 2 sizing so make sure you use the inner screw. Outer ones are for legal files. I am glad I took a leap of faith and ordered it inspite of the reviews saying this and that. ... show more

    • Great piece of furniture!
This file cabinet shelf combo is even better than I thought it'd be! It's super sturdy, doesn't feel cheap at all, and gives me tons of table top room, which I was missing for the longest time! Yes, my desk lamp base is a little large, as is my alarm clock, but my room is really really small, and I have absolutely no space for anything! It was a bit tedious to assemble because of all the parts required but once finished, it was beautiful! Even though all my files are not yet in it, it still has some good weight to it, which makes it feel like a quality piece of furniture, really unexpected for a not so expensive price. Easy to assemble even with all the hardware. But it has a design flaw. The wheel and bracket to the whee prevent the bottom drawer from closing. When I removed the wheel and it’s bracket the drawer closed further but not all the way because the design flaw is the drawer face is too big for the drawer space so it does not match flush making the drawer lock also unusable. For the price of this thing the design flaw is unacceptable. Plus the wheel and it’s placement is just dumb. It’s made to help you move it but you have to tilt it to utilize the wheel. Better to lift and move than to dump everything out. Don’t waste your money. It’s not worth it. ... show more

    • Bottom drawer wheel will hit the bottom if the bottom is installed backwards
There is a note missing from the assembly instructions creating the potential of installing the bottom piece backwards. This will cause the bottom drawer to not close because the wheel will hit the bottom piece. I am guessing the negative reviews all installed the bottom piece backwards like I did. Once I flipped it, so it was flush with the back of the cabinet and recessed in the front. Once I corrected this it turned out very nice. ... show more

    • My son loves it
I got this for my 27 yo son, who I share a house with, and is extremely spoiled by me. I finally decided he needed to keep track of his own paperwork and bought him this file cabinet as a surprise. I put it together for him, because I like to do stuff like that, and he now has it next to his recliner, and is doing his own filing. Putting it together was really easy, although it would not have taken me two hours to do if I didn't have three kittens "helping" me. Everything fit together perfectly and the directions were very clear. Its nice and sturdy, holds quite a few files, and the locks work well, although if someone really wanted to get into it all they would have to do is pry it open with a tire iron. The keys are not interchangeable, so hang onto both sets of keys in a safe place. His laptop fits on the top shelf, he's already filled up the bottom shelf, and its kitten approved too. ... show more

    • This looks pretty good... when I straighten the drawer.
This looked promising, with all the many heavy parts in the box. The instructions and packaging made assembly fairly easy, just tedious and pretty darn time consuming (3.5 hours for me, and I'm good at putting things together). The thing is, I expected that things would be straight and fit at 90-degree angles (this is especially important if you don't want this thing to look super cheap, even if you're just using it for functionality in a low traffic area of your home). This isn't necessarily true, at least not without some way to measure precision as you go along, or when first looking at the parts. Anyway, I only noticed at the end that the top drawer was crooked. Like, visibly. I tried to back-track and make adjustments to fix this, but it wasn't possible. I can finagle the drawer to look straight, but if I so much as breathe on it, it goes crooked again. I also had to remove that strange wheel (as some other reviewers have mentioned) from the bottom drawer, as it was awkward and prevented the full closing of that drawer. Other than that, this is a decent-looking, functional cabinet, and the wood does look pretty nice, not like some cheap "woods" you see on inexpensive functional furniture that requires assembly. ... show more
