  • Inferior build quality compared to the AmScope of the same design
I purchased the Vanstarry since it is the identical design to the AmScope brand (AmScope M162C-2L-PB10-WM). However, after testing it with the sample slides, it has some build quality issues. A couple days later, I purchased the AmScope for a side by side comparison. Here we go: The monocular eye tube on the Vanstarry has a set screw you have to loosen and tighten to turn it around. Once loosened, it is wobbly and doesn't turn smoothly. I get the design as it is supposed to detach for use with the provided slide prep stage. Nice idea, bad craftsmanship. The AmScope is not made to detach, but is silky smooth and no wobble. The light on the Vanstarry did not work as described. The top light by itself or bottom and top together. It does have a three position switch, but the top light did not work with the bottom. The AmScope did. The stage clips on the Vanstarry work OK. But the ones on the AmScope, much like the eyepiece body tube, had a much more smooth motion. Not a big deal, but this is for 9 year old grandsons and could be a point of frustration for a child. The 3 lens nosepiece was much the same on both as was the optical quality. The interchangeable ocular eyepieces showed little difference as well. The quick stage adjustment on the Vanstarry was quite stiff to rotate which would be another issue for kids. The AmScope, easy and smooth with just the right amount of resistance. Now for the manuals (see images). No comparison. The AmScope is more like a workable lab book with colorful illustrations. The Vanstarry is a feeble attempt at being classified as a manual, much less being of any help. There are illegal immigrants with better English. A massive 5 pages of broken English is what you get. Sad. The one upside for the Vanstarry kit is the slide prep stage. Great idea, but if you cannot get the eyetube and mirror housing out to use it, it makes for a nice fantasy. Bottom line is, if you can tolerate what I've described, the actual optics are of no detectable difference. That's where the $30 additional dollars come in for the AmScope to get the more premium operation and feel. With the actual manual and workbook, its worth it, IMO. ... show more

  • I love it
I bought this to use in a junior high classroom. I opened it and used it with my four-year-old, seven-year-old, 11-year-old, and 15-year-old niece is a nephews. They all enjoyed using it. It was hours of fun. We went out and found things to examine in addition to the slides that it came with. Highly recommend. Would buy again. ... show more

  • Neat little microscope for beginners. Nothing too advanced.
The microscope comes with all the hardships of microscope. I was hoping the phone attachment could help with focusing but that is poorly made and could not get that working for more than a couple of seconds because the phone would slide. Besides that this simple microscope was a gift for a six year old and it seems like the microscope was somewhat successful once she was able to see bacteria and onion cells. As a side note for people getting this as a gift for children: the most concerning part is the glass slides. I forget how tight those containers are and believe children will cut themselves trying to get one slide out. ... show more

  • Really cool microscope!
We have really only used it a little but it is so cool to use. We had another microscope, but it was just not the best. This looks better, and I am wanting to try to make our own slides too. The only question I have is how do you turn on the top light and the bottom light at the same time? We are homeschoolers so this will come in so handy. ... show more
