  • Amazing small speakers: loaded with functionality and killer audio performance
Although I'm a long time audio snob I've always been in a tight spot with my computer setup due to limited desk space. For over ten years I've been using Audioengine A2s which are impressive in their own right, but as I recently overhauled my workspace I wanted to finally upgrade from them. This had been on my mind for a few years but I didn't know what I wanted to get. My new setup allowed for slightly larger speakers, but I still have some pretty strict limitations on how much of my desk I can take up with audio gear as I use the space for too many other things at times and the free space for large monitors doesn't really exist on my setup. My quest for a new set of powered monitors with digital inputs lead me through a lot of options but once I discovered and read in to the Vanatoos I had the feeling I was on the right track. What's to like? Plenty... They're surprisingly compact and solid. I have them sitting flat on their bottoms which means their fronts and drivers are angled up perfectly towards my ears. The finish on them is very good, and the funky stand is sturdy even if it doesn't quite convey the same quality as the rest of the kit (I removed the stands and put them away). The grilles are really nicely made and the magnetic attachment is very secure. While operating, the plate on the back of the active speaker does get surprisingly warm; Vanatoo acknowledges this and says it is normal, but it certainly seems warmer than I'd expect based on my old speakers. The range of inputs is fantastic. While it would be nice to see 24/48 or 24/96 on USB input (optical is 24/96), in reality that's more for padding spec sheets than delivering a significant difference in audio quality. I've had them connected primarily via USB, partially for convenience but also because I want to take full advantage of the auto-sleep functionality. Sound quality is stellar. I've tried a number of their settings to determine what I like best. On their own in shelved mode - default setting and the recommended mode when on a desk and near a rear wall - they sound pretty great. I'd probably leave them that way if I weren't using a subwoofer, however after trying a number of different things I think I like flat mode with the limiters disabled the most. It's hard to do a proper blind comparison when a) you're not blinded and b) it takes a bit to change configurations. Still, they don't disappoint in any mode I've tried them in. Without a sub they produce surprisingly full and punchy bass. Be warned though: they will rattle everything on your desk! I've also paired these with an Emotiva Airmotiv S8 Flex subwoofer which has filled out more depth in the bass and provides more impact, but as bonus it also makes the stuff on my desk wayyyy less rattly. If I were not using a sub I may look for a different solution to isolate them from my desk more. As mentioned above, experimentation with settings has lead to me switching them to their flat DSP mode and disabling the limiters while using the sub. I like the overall integration and sound with the setup when matched with the sub best in this configuration. With the 80Hz low pass to the sub I feel there's a bit more vibration on my desk from the speakers, but it's still much milder than running them full range without a sub, and the sub is less localizable in my setup with the 80Hz low pass. Clarity is not a problem for these speakers, the mids are clear and easily tease apart details in music, and the highs are smooth, detailed, and clear. Imaging and soundstage are better than expected, it's not the broadest or most expansive sound but I'm hardly surprised given how I have everything arranged. Still, they are very convincing and very enjoyable. I'm rather curious to bring these to the other room and see how they really stand up against my Ascend Acoustics Sierra 1s, but for the purpose I bought them they are fantastic. Configuring the speakers is a bit fiddly. The process itself is interesting, however considering the fact they have one button, one 3-way switch, and a knob, it feels like you need a third hand at times and the settings can be a bit tricky to adjust once the speakers are placed if you have to reach around behind them or your computer's monitors. I'd love a way to adjust all the settings from the remote, but this works and once you find settings you like I don't think you'll be messing with them much. All that said, Vanatoo have managed to provide an effective way to control almost 10 different settings for the speakers. The remote is also a really convenient bonus, I use it the most for tweaking bass output depending on what I'm listening to and I really like that it has a 'mid' setting so I can zero things back out to the balanced configuration I have my subwoofer adjusted to. Other adjustments I've made were to disable the auto-input switching, they wake up much faster this way and I don't have a problem manually changing inputs should I need to. As good as these are, of course there are some opportunities. * On my powered speaker the plug for the mounting hole on the bottom likes to fall out, in fact when I removed the speakers it originally stayed behind in the bag. Fairly minor overall, but it can get in the way when moving the speaker. I suspect it'll disappear on me eventually. * I'd rather the grilles not be branded. I tend to prefer a pretty understated look. While I could go without grills (like the Audioengines) I have them on for now and do like the protection. I also wouldn't mind if the grilles were a bit more transparent, I don't mind seeing the drivers! * When waking from sleep there tends to be a couple pops that come from the speakers. They're not loud, but it would be nice if it didn't happen. From looking around this seems to be pretty common so I'm not worried about it, although it subjectively detracts from the overall premium presentation of the speakers and their performance. * I'd love to have a way to disable the subwoofer output on demand. There is a button the remote that is, as far as I'm aware, unused at this time. If that Fn1 button could be used to toggle the sub out off or on, I would be pretty thrilled. Normally I want the sub on, but sometimes I may just want to listen to the speakers in their full range mode. Even better if the function of the button was customizable, and it would be really cool if Vanatoo could have a Windows or Mac application that allowed the user to control all its settings via a GUI (no idea if that'd actually be possible). As far as issues, only one so far: Yesterday I tried to switch my audio over to the Vanatoos for some music and while my system saw them I could get no sound to come out. I wound up power cycling the speakers and that resolved the issue. When I was power cyling, since I had to feel blindly for the cord, I don't know if I reseated something that was loose. I had been moving some stuff a bit earlier but I don't think that'd leave them showing as connected in Windows without audio. Will have to monitor to see if that happens again, it's entirely possible it was a PC issue and a reboot or some other device troubleshooting on the computer would have resolved it, but I tried the power cycle first. ... show more

  • Love these speakers!
I’ve been using a pair of Audioengine A2+ desktop speakers for 4-5 years, and although they weren’t bad speakers, I felt I had outgrown them and was ready for an upgrade. I came across a mention of the T0 (actually in an A2+ review here on Amazon), and after reading near universal praise from numerous sources, decided to give a set a try. As is probably the case with most buyers of these speakers, space is a factor. The T0’s are a little bigger than the A2+, but should be able to fit into just about any desktop scenario. In my particular situation, they’re on a table in my office, on either side of my TV, and they’re also connected via USB to my computer. A small subwoofer (a 6” Orb subMINI) is present as well. I mostly listen to classical music. Though I’m fairly particular about how my speakers sound, I’m not knowledgeable enough nor do I have the discerning ears to offer precise audiophile-ish descriptions of the sonic characteristics of speakers or headphones, so I’ll just say these sound great, and I can’t imagine a small set of speakers sounding any better than this! With a house full of people, I don’t typically listen at very loud volumes, but I have cranked it up a few times when no one was home, and was really impressed at how fantastic they sounded. And they sound great at my more typical low-moderate levels as well. A few observations, mostly to do with functionality: The good: 1) I love the fact that the speakers are “smart” in terms of dealing with a subwoofer. The T0’s only send the low frequencies to the sub rather than everything. While that probably doesn’t make a huge difference (because the sub has its own crossover control), more importantly, when the T0 detects that a sub is connected, it will filter those low frequencies from its own speakers, so that it doesn’t waste effort trying to reproduce low bass that the sub will be handling anyway. That’s a great feature, and was one of the deciding factors for me. 2) When I read that the right speaker is the “main” (with all the connections and brains), I groaned, as my setup was configured for the main speaker to be on the left, and it would take some rearranging to accommodate the shift. Why can’t manufacturers make this configurable, so that the main could be on whatever side you want? Oh wait, with these YOU CAN! The method of doing this (and making other configuration changes) is a bit arcane and clumsy, but is fine considering it’s not something that needs to be accessed often. 3) Another thing I really like about these is that rather than one amp inside the main speaker producing the full range of frequencies and relying on passive crossovers to filter out the unsuitable frequencies to each of the two drivers in each speaker, the T0 is bi-amped, which means it has four amplifier channels (two for each speaker) so that each woofer and tweeter has its own amp. That’s the reason for the weird network cable to connect the other speaker, since it carries these separate signals for the woofer and tweeter. A few small complaints: 1) I found the auto source switching a bit too sensitive. As the manual notes, if a signal is detected on an input that has a higher priority than the current one, the T0 switches to it. Problem is, with analog (which my TV is connected to) being at the top of the list of priorities, if the TV is off and I’m listening to music via USB, just a tiny tick of induced electrical noise (such as turning on a fluorescent desk lamp elsewhere in the room) will trigger the T0 to switch to the analog input. Even worse, in some cases, there’s nothing readily apparent that triggered the switch (presumably just some random bit of electrical noise in the house somewhere). After several seconds it will figure out there’s nothing there and switch back to USB, but it’s very annoying to be enjoying a piece of music and have it cut out like that. It would be nice if the T0 would only switch if it detected a half second or so of continuous audio to reduce this unwanted switching (but then, of course, some would complain that it switches too slowly!). This is one area where the A2+ was superior – all inputs were active simultaneously, no switching (auto or manual) necessary. With the T0, one solution would be to manually select the input (which stops auto-switching), or I could connect the TV via optical, but both of these would require me to keep the T0’s remote nearby (either to switch sources, or to control the TV volume). Instead, I added an inexpensive analog-to-digital converter box. This takes the analog output from the TV (with variable volume controlled by the TV), and converts it to optical, which is connected to the T0… it’s still possible that occasional electrical noise still may be present between the TV and the converter, but because optical is lower on the input priority list than USB, it won’t unexpectedly auto-switch. 2) I usually listen (music and TV) at low to moderate volume while I work. But at these levels, and with much of the material I listen to not being particularly bass-heavy, I found that often the sub would not get enough of a signal to wake it up or keep it awake (there’s no way to disable the sub’s auto-off). Though perhaps some would say classical music doesn’t need a sub, I like that little bit of extra low end, and I definitely notice its absence. This was not a problem with the A2+, presumably because those speakers sent the full signal range to the sub (instead of just the low frequencies), and also possibly because the signal was hotter since I used a Y cable (L + R output from speaker merged into one for the sub) while the sub output from the T0 is just one. I can’t really blame this on the T0, as it’s a bit of an edge case, and is really more of a problem of the sub itself combined with how I listen. That being said, it would be nice if the T0 would let the user adjust sub output via the remote (like its big brother, the T1E can do). I added a small line-level amplifier, which boosts the T0’s output enough to keep the sub awake (turning down the level control on the sub itself to compensate, of course). 3) Lack of AAC support for Bluetooth could be a significant downside for iOS users, since these devices don’t support aptX (leaving only the basic, lower-quality default Bluetooth codec). Not an issue for me, as I intend for all my music to come from my MacBook Pro via USB (and the MBP does support aptX if I needed to go wireless). One option for iOS users who want to stream wirelessly at higher quality than regular Bluetooth allows is to pick up a (discontinued) Airport Express from Ebay, which will enable you to use AirPlay 2. Despite these nitpicks, I’m completely satisfied with these speakers and would absolutely buy them again without hesitation, because these issues are relatively minor and are far outweighed by the sound quality and other favorable aspects of the speakers. ... show more
