  • Looks like so much fun with a little brain power.
I'm really excited about this for my son. He's interested in vehicles, how they work, he tells me all about the different engines that are in them, so this is a Christmas gift for him. I love how it's arranged the same way that a Lego kit would be, I did take some of the pieces out. They snapped together really easily, I didn't see any defects in the ones that I took out, so they're all relatively well manufactured. I did get this for a 12-year-old who is into Legos and vehicles, but if your kid has fine motor skills, deficits or struggles with putting things together, they are going to have a hard time snapping these together. But that would be true of really any Lego toy that you were going to buy. It's broken up into different sections so you don't have to build it all at once, you can dedicate a little bit of time over a few days to build it. I'm really excited to see how it works and depending on how that goes, when we do open it and put it all the way together, I might have to update my review. But as of right now I'm really excited about this purchase. ... show more

  • A Five-Star Lesson in How Things Work
I bought this V8 engine kit with a specific goal in mind: to teach my two daughters, 11 and 13, the basics of how a car engine operates. I figure that's a life skill that could save them from getting taken advantage of down the road. I'm giving this kit a full five stars because it served that purpose perfectly and turned out to be a great project for us to tackle together. What I really liked was the process itself. The instructions were surprisingly clear, and we were able to lay out all 715 pieces and work through the assembly as a team. The parts snapped together well, and seeing it take shape was rewarding. The best part, by far, was watching my girls have that "aha" moment when they saw how the crankshaft moves the pistons and how the whole mechanical dance comes together. When we finished, we hooked up the little electric motor, and the whole thing came to life. The pistons move, and the little lights fire in sequence to show the combustion cycle. It’s one thing to explain it, but it's another thing entirely for them to see it in action. My only real dislike was that some of the pieces are incredibly small. It required a good deal of patience, and my 55-year-old eyes needed a break a couple of times. A few steps were a bit fiddly, but we got through them. As for the value, it's excellent. I wasn't just buying a plastic model; I was buying a hands-on lesson. The time spent with my daughters, working on a project and teaching them something practical, was worth every penny. It’s a well-designed kit that makes a complex subject understandable, and we had a good time building it. It now has a proud spot on the shelf in our workshop. ... show more

  • Impressive V8 Model Kit Thats Fun to Build & Cool to Display
This V8 engine kit was a fun and hands-on build from start to finish. The fact that the moving cams and pistons give it a realistic touch is fantastic, although the rest of it is more of an eyesight treat than a mechanical reality. The motor, lighting, and app-driven speed settings that came with it also add some extra punch, especially for younger builders. Assembly was simple, though I'll note that the company does have a bit of a habit of using colors in the instructions that don't really match colors on the parts themselves and is something to watch out for when assembling. The parts are well-made, and the rechargeable power pack equals no extra batteries to buy. I would say it's ideal for children under 12 who enjoy cars or construction, but adolescents over 13 may find it a bit too simple. Nevertheless, it's a great gift for car nuts or anyone who likes tinker with things. Once finished, it's a real showpiece and even a good conversation piece. Overall, this kit is a fun mix of STEM learning and imaginative construction that's satisfying to assemble and looks lovely on a shelf. ... show more

  • Complex kit with ambiguous instructions
This reminds me of the "visible" models from the 70's and 80's. This is my first build like this in years, and I had a lot of trouble figuring out the instructions. There are two different numbers on each bag and I couldn't figure out which bag to start with... turns out all bags with a "1" on them (don't look at the other number) can be opened up and put in a container together for searching through. The individual "1" bags are not organized by step or page number, when you are working on the "1" project, any step's pieces could be in any one of the bags. Hope that helps some other poor soul. Also on the instruction book, the visual assembly instructions are often ambiguous. it will show several pieces connected together so you don't know if you have to put the new piece in between two pieces, or if you put it through from one end and it comes out the other, etc. It also tells you to connect two pieces together in one step, then on the next step it has you put that piece together a whole different way to connect it to something else. why??? If you look at it as a model it will be frustrating but if you look at it as a puzzle, that is more apropos of what it's like putting this together. Yes there are instructions but interpreting them is hard. ... show more
