i bought, and returned these 2 weeks ago...i'm not someone who pretends to hear things i don't really hear, but my impression of these is based on 3 (mobile) different headphones and 2 iems i use a lot ( yeah yeah iems are not headphones, different soundstage, i get it ) ...the headphones/iems that i have used for a long time and that i know well with certain types of music are: dt1350 by beyerdynamic, sennheiser momentum on ears, grado rs2i, ety e4's, and the criminally underappreciated brainwavz S1 ( which have to be one of the best vaues out there, what a spectacular in ear )...anyway, to my ears - and sticking to more of a mobile situation - i will just focus on the vmodas vs. the sennheiser momentum on ears and the dt1350's ...i spent almost a week comparing these 3, i used my fiio x3, with hi rez tracks from hdtracks and my own ripped flac files using dbpoweramp. in the end i decided to send the vmodas back...while i have to give them a 6 stars out of 5 if i could, for the build quality, not to mention the sex appeal, i do think they are the weakest of the 3 ( again comparing the xs to the dt1350 and sennheiser momentum on ears ). surprisingly, i found the bass on the vmodas to be almost floppy - NOT repeat NOT saying it was floppy, but it's darn close. the sub bass is there, which is nice - i am SOOOOO sick of headphones and iems with that phony emphasized bass with non existent sub bass - so i give kudos to the vmodas for the sub bass, however it is not as tight and punchy as the dt1350s. i find the sennheiser momentum on ears to be superb for 50s west coast jazz, which i focus on a lot, but for progressive stuff, i prefer fast, clear phones, more along the lines of my grados. to my ears the dt1350's have the best of both worlds, superb, i mean just superb bass, sub bass, great mids and clarity and great on the treble. the big drawback of course, is how poor their comfort is, until you get them broken in, and until you get used to them. the vmodas crush the dt1350's in comfort and build, but the dt1350's take the prize in sound to my ears. another odd thing though about the vmodas, was for me, the fit. i found them to be super comfortable, but they weren't tight enough for me, they slid around on head a bit much, and i would say i have a pretty average size melon lol. i spent a lot of time listening to, specifically, porcupine tree discs and peter gabriel disks, with all 3 headphones. i even compared them quite a bit playing them thru my aune T1 and comparing them to my jewels, my grado rs2i's...no comparison there, the grados play porcupine tree thru my T1 like nothing else....the S1 and ety 4's are such different animals there is not much point in comparing them, other than to say that the S1's are a truly spectacular value in iems's - why they are not winning a bunch of awards is beyond me. anyway to sum up my rambling, i like the overall sound of the dt1350s much better than the xs, i like the bass and treble response better on the senny MOE and the dt1350s, i think that both the dt1350s and the xs's have superb mids, beating out the senn MOEs to my ears for mids. it really bothers me how loose i found the bass to be on the xs's....not bad, NOT saying that at all, but certainly not as tight as the dt1350s nor the senn MOE's.....do yourself a favor, and get a hi rez player like a fiio or ibasso, and listen to high rez versions of porcupine trees' disc 'in abstentia thru some dt1350s if you have a chance...nirvana ... show more

I had specific criteria for a pair of headphones: - Needed to be relatively small & not stick out when I'm wearing them out in public - Have a microphone and remote on the cable - Not clamp too hard/hurt my ears or the top of my head - Isolate from outside sound - Not leak sound at higher volumes - Durable enough to wear outside, stand up to the heat, sun, etc. - Not take up a lot of space in my bag - Sound Great I went through a number of on-ear headphones in my search. I tried the Audio-Technica ATH M50s (bulky, no soundstage), Sennheiser Momentum on-ears (too tight on the ears, leaked sound at fairly low volumes), Bowers and Wilkins P5s (almost nonexistent treble), Audio-Technica ESW9A (questionable build quality, no soundstage) and Beyerdynamic DT1350s (Great, but too neutral sounding for my ears). The V-Moda XS were the only pair that excelled in every area. They have a light (but not too light) clamping force and don't hurt my ears after long sessions. They fold up into a very compact form. They are extremely durable, with a replaceable cord and earpads. They isolate fairly well from outside noise and go up to about 50% volume without leaking sound. As for the sound - They have a very rich, mid-centric sound profile. The bass is tight and punchy and the treble is there but not shrill. I would describe these as 'dark' cans because the highs are somewhat rolled off but the resulting sound is pleasant with most genres and does not fatigue after long listening sessions. The soundstage while nowhere near what a pair of open cans would provide is much better than the ATH-M50s. Negatives - I do not like the cord, full stop. It is kevlar reinforced and seems very durable but it has a lot of memory to it and looks like a crooked mess most of the time. Thankfully there are a number of other cords that work with it (I've heard that Beats and Fiio cords work). The remote is only one button and has no volume control. When I use these as a headset on my computer people often complain that they can't hear me - but I will be getting the boompro mic to remedy that. As for the sound, I wish it had more treble sometimes, particularly with jazz. For this reason I have a pair of Koss KSC75s modded with a Parts Express headband that provide that open, sparkly sound for less than $20 (seriously, those things are miraculous!). Update 1/24/2015: I got the Boompro Mic and it fixed the issue with people not hearing me. It is similarly built like a tank and awesome. ... show more
