  • Well Built Cutting Edge USB-C Hub
Style: 12 in 1 Docking Station
Utechsmart is no stranger to USB-C hubs offering a wide array of hubs offering different functionalities at different price points. Whenever purchasing a device it is critical to read the description to ensure the product meets your needs. This 12 in 1 USB C hub is at the cutting edge of technology offering 2 USB 2.0 ports, 2 USB 3.0 (3.1 Gen 1 5 GBPS), Type-C charge port, USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 5 GBPS). Gigabit 1000 MBPS RJ45 Port, SD/Micro SD, and 3 HDMI ports. For my testing purposes I wanted to test this on my ASUS Prime Z370-A motherboard offering a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A and Type C ports. Right off the bat I had no difficulty in plugging in USB 3.0 External portable drives and transferring @ 90 MBPS; with a EasyStore drive @ 147 MBPS. The SD/micro was a bit counter intuitive and would not register at first. Upon reading the manual it confirms "The SD card slot and the TF card slot can't be used on the hub simultaneous." Simply enough taking out the microSD and reinserting my SD card allowed me to transfer my DSLR photos effortlessly. This may add a step for some people transferring between SD cards of copying files to the desktop; changing cards then copying files to the other card. One spec worth highlighting is the product page statement "Premium temperature controlling technology chip to keep your device operating temperature always below 50 degree". This is a device which offers expanding one USB-C port into 12 so it is very understandable the board inside may get hot, and "a burn is damage to your skin caused by a temperature as low as 44 degrees Celsius (109.4 Fahrenheit) for a long time." Thus, one should likely not hold this product for extended periods of time after hours of use, but also not fear burns quickly packing it away. During my initial test the device did not get anywhere near being hot to touch. USB-C is unfortunately an extremely confusing format with 3.1 Gen 1 @ 5 GBPS, Gen 2 @ 10 GBPS, and Thunderbolt 3 @ 40 GBPS. Adding to this difficulty, many manufacturers do not support video over USB. This product would not display HDMI for my ASUS board, and will find great use buying modern laptops offering a Thunderbolt 3 port. USB-C is rated "6 times more durable than USB-A," and ensures years of use plugging and unplugging this device. As Microsoft states, "Make sure your PC (or phone), the external display, and the cable all support DisplayPort or MHL alternate modes." In conclusion, it is important to contact your device manufacturer to ensure your device supports video over USB. You can also try reaching out to UtechSmart's support to see if they know your device is compatible. This may mean that this is not the right device for you, but you should not think twice buying another UTechSmart USB-C hub that fits your personal needs. In my test my ASUS board had zero issues besides HDMI which they offer a Lightning 3 card that may fix this easily. UtechSmart offers unmatched customer support along with cutting edge devices. They offer "if you have any problem, just contact us at support@utechsmart.com ;" with a 18 months warranty. This is one of the best devices I have ever owned, and have found their support some of the best in the industry. Buy with confidence! This is a device that offers extreme capabilities for working professionals. As a geophysicist I use multi screen workstations every day. This product comes with a carrying pouch so you can throw it in your bag and be prepared for any challenge whether its for work or watching movies with your friends and co workers. I will finish this review by listing details from their product manual. It should be noted these are specs published at the time of writing and will likely work on newer systems. Consult your product manufacturer as these are very likely to change in 2020: Supported Systems: Apple OS X Yosemite up to 10.10.2/Apple OS X El Capitan up to 10.11.5/ Windows 10 Home up to 1511/ Google Chrome OS up to 46.0.2490.82 Incompatible List: 1) ASUS all series 2) Dell all series 3) Lenovo C Series (Power delivery is not supported, incompatible devices above.) 4) Acer all series (Video Signal Output isn't supported) 5) Samsung TabPro S 6) Wacom mobilestudio pro 16 7) Nexus 6P 8) Surface Book 2 (can't pass power) 9) iPad Pro 2018 (need ios 13.0 and up) Compatibility List: Full compatible with these devices (Both Data Transfer and Charge) 1) Macbook 2015/2016/2017/2018 2) Macbook Pro 13"/15" 2016/2017/2018 3) Google Chromebook 2016/2017/2018 4)Microsoft Lumia 950/950XL 5) Huawei Matebook 2016/2017/2018. • Gets pretty hot and it wasn't clear what the USB-C input was about, but saved me $200
Style: 12 in 1 Docking Station
The one year edit: This device has continued to perform flawlessly, to the point where I recommended this to another team member in Ireland. She loves it to the point where she's telling her team about it. Accidental out-of-box failures aside, if you need a reasonably priced docking station, absolutely get this - just know that you can only have a maximum of 3 screens. Like many of those who were fortunate enough to work remotely during the pandemic, I worked from home for over a year. While working remotely, my laptop was upgraded and I was given an amazing docking station (charged the laptop, just had to plug in the USB-C port, plenty of monitor port options, a good number of USB ports). We're now entering a hybrid phase, which means I'm working Tuesdays and Thursdays in the office. Management announced that no new equipment purchases would be approved. I'm not complaining at all! My amazing job let me work from home forever, I saved on gas and insurance, I got to KEEP MY JOB. But dragging that docking station back and forth, well, that was kind of extra. A coworker gave me this listing and I decided to give it a shot. This was around Prime day, the device cost me $70. An actual second docking station would have cost me $250-$300 (I looked). Yeah, I kept my job and all, but I don't have like TESLA money or anything to be buying a docking station like that. I'll go with the bad first, detracts nothing from the rating, but I hope that telling you this will help you be prepared: It gets hot. Not like setting things on fire hot, but after a 10 hour day, I began to get worried. My home didn't burn down though, and I have a monitor base to rest it on the corner of for a little extra airflow, so yay for not dying of immolation in my sleep. The USB-C port that you can plug a charger into, as far as I can see, is worthless. There isn't a lot of documentation or information in the Q&A section, but from what I can tell, plugging the USB-C in to a power port does 2 things: Gives a little 'oomph' to charging anything except your laptop, and makes the device even hotter. I abandoned this connection after 2 hours and just plugged my laptop's mobile charger in. Not a huge issue for me personally, as I don't use this device to charge devices, and it's still just one plug for the laptop charger. HDMI only. If you have a monitor with DisplayPort, you'll either need an HDMI cable, or a DP > HDMI adapter. You've been warned. It has 3 HDMI ports, but max monitor support is 3. So you can't have 3 HDMI monitors plus your laptop screen. You can have 2 monitors and the laptop screen, or 3 monitors and no laptop screen. I've grown so accustomed to 3 screens (2 monitors and a laptop) that I've been mulling over a 4th screen. Not happening with this device. All minor gripes. Now for the good part: SO TINY!!!! My OEM docking station is a 6x6x4 cuboid with its own power cable and a big rectangular whatever-it-is that lets you then plug into an outlet. This thing is smaller than a lot of TV remotes (not including smart TV remotes) I've had. TINY!!! Ports for days! I think this device has more ports than the OEM dock (maybe like 1 more USB port, but more is more). I like knowing the ports are there even though I only use 1 for the wireless dongle for my mouse and keyboard. Because some might say less is more, but in this case, more is more, am I right?? HDMI Ports: You have 2 right next to each other and one on the small end. Depending on your end connector, you won't have to try to wedge 2 of them in right next to each other. All in all, between the money I saved and the functionality I preserved, there are 0 regrets with this purchase. There were some birth pangs when I first got it, and yeah, I have to plug in 2 things to the laptop rather than just 1, but if anything, that adds another star to this device and detracts a half star from my employer. ... show more
