It does not rust outside in the rain or snow. I use it to place my garbage bin at the curb. After the Sanitation Dept. empties my bin, I haul it back to my property & chain it to my fence. I leave the bin outside all day & night because it too is weatherproof just like the security chain & attached pad lock. The chain is very heavy and much longer than needed to lock a gate. But, it is working for us. We live in an urban setting and have problems with people trespassing into our back yard. We put this duo on a chain link gate across our driveway. We used to have a lighter weight lock on it, but someone tore it off and entered our yard during the night.
