  • My new favorite gardening toy!
I was highly skeptical of this when I first saw the listing, but this thing is AWESOME! First, this thing is bigger and heavier than I realized, but all of that works out for the better. The weight helps it chew through compact dirt so you can just focus on keeping your drill from spinning. The tip has a couple blades which helps to make easy work of entry into the dirt. Tip: you'll want something 18V, 20V or more (or a corded drill), and if you have an attachable handle, use it for leverage. The key is to let the auger drive ITSELF down while you just focus on not letting your drill spin. The auger works great. It fits perfectly in both my drills, it effectively breaks through even the toughest dirt, and it extracts easily (which was a concern initially). I tried using this in an area where I have very hard clay (hard enough to bend a couple gardening spades) and this made easy work of it. If you have anything other than the lightest, fluffiest soil, I'd throw one of these in your shed. I plan on using this for tons of jobs beyond simple gardening, even to just break up the soil in places where my tiller has struggled. At $30 its an easy investment to prevent a potentially frustrating gardening experience. ... show more

  • Solid auger bit
The media could not be loaded. A few years ago I purchased a similar bit, but 2 inches. I’ve used it for addressing small troublesome spots in my lawn where the grass just doesn’t seem to want to grow due to non-ideal soil, such as hard-packed clay. My routine is to drill a hole about 5-6 inches deep, and then mix in some compost and other organic material as I fill the hole back up. Obviously if you have a larger area of bad soil, this method is not practical, and you should use a rototiller or some other means to amend the soil with organic material, but for small spots (for which a rototiller might be too destructive to the nearby good portions of the lawn), this works great. I decided to try this 3 inch bit for this same purpose. This bit is well made, solid and heavy. Although it fits a drill with a 3/8” chuck (which is what I use it with), honestly a bigger drill with a 1/2” chuck and a side grab-handle would be a better choice for this, as the torque you are fighting against can really wear your hand out, possibly even causing an injury if you are not really careful… I keep the mechanical gear switch on the low setting, and try to run it at the lowest speed possible, but as the bit catches on things (roots, heavy clay, etc.), it can cause the trigger to be inadvertently pushed further, and the drill will whip around on you… a side handle would help with this. In addition, this usage puts a lot of strain on the drill itself, so a more substantial drill would be able to handle this better. One important factor about this bit is that it’s quite long, which means you can walk around the yard drilling these holes without having to crouch down. So, it’s really ideal for this purpose. ... show more

  • I didnt' know how badly I needed this set!
This review is for, "Upgraded Auger Drill Bit for Planting, 3''x32'' Drill Auger for Digging Holes, Heavy Duty Post Hole Digger for Garden Planting, Bulbs Fences Umbrella Holes, Fit 3/8" Hex Drive Drill" by Liedisess I've put in garden fence post holes before. T-posts are their own beast with a driver, but smaller wooden posts are awkward - too small for a big auger or post hole digger and too big to just drive in. This set mad it soooo much easier! I'm using the smaller auger first to make something almost like a pilot hole for the larger unit. That's because our soil is pretty solid. This set worked perfectly and now my bean poles (think narrow peeler poles) are set deep enough to be solid. This just makes it so much easier! The quality is very good. The paint is heavily applied and the steel is solid and well made. I'll probably repaint after each season just to keep them from rusting, but we have a LOT of rocks. All in all I'm quite satisfied with this set. ... show more

  • This auger will not work with a standard drill.
The media could not be loaded. I can only get about a 3" deep hole before it snubs out my Dewalt XR cordless drill. The post for this shows pictures of a standard cordless drill connected to the auger. This is misleading. I think you will need to hook this up to a ice fishing auger to drill any deeper than 3". I have used my Dewalt drill for many applications and I have never been able to snub it out unless the battery was dead. I don't recommend this auger for anyone who needs to dig any deeper than 3". ... show more
