  • This Umbrella Is a Sturdy Wind Tamer
Color: Navy Blue-42in Size: 42 INCH
We don’t travel much. And we live in a dry climate, with a short rainy, windy season. So, to decide if the UNDERTREE Travel Umbrella was a good gift purchase, we fished out our two aging-but-functional car/travel umbrellas and compared features. Our “car umbrella” is much lighter, folds to half the size of the UNDERTREE umbrella but the coverage is barely enough for one person --a mere 32 inches. Our “travel umbrella” is larger but it falls 6 inches short of the 42-inch coverage of the UNDERTREE umbrella. You don’t get the grand coverage of a 54 inch two-person umbrella, but for one person carrying packages or wearing a backpack; or two on a romantic stroll in the Spring, the coverage here would be adequate. For our dollar, the real selling point for this umbrella is its solid construction and wind wrangling design. Both of our current umbrellas had inverted—turned completely inside out – when they were most needed, this UNDERTREE Travel Umbrella has a special panel that deflects incoming wind to prevent umbrella inversion. We think that the UNDERTREE umbrella wins on material, solid construction, excellent wind handling design, and generous one-person coverage. We plan to gift our well-traveled cousin with one of these. ... show more

  • Semi-automatic "Collapsing" umbrella.
Color: Burgundy-46in Size: 46 INCH
First some statistics and facts: Weighing 15 ounces (with the "cover), it's not the "lightest" umbrella out there (I have one at just 11 ounces). Length is just under 12 inches. Has a 4-inch handle soft-loop (plenty big to get my hand into). Deployed diameter is just at 40 inches (the smallest I have is 34 inches, the biggest is 42 inches in "travel" style) Strong release action but not uncontrolled. Seems to be self-regulating. Now the observations: The splines are good and sturdy, and presumably will be stronger than equivalent unvented umbrellas See Picture. The "Venting" is accomplished by having 2 overlapping sections of cloth (no, it is NOT double, just 4 inches are double covered). So when the wind blows, it will be able to flow out from under the umbrella in the space where my fingers show through, thereby not getting "trapped" in the upturned umbrella. Very similar to the way a tent is vented by having an overlapping section of roof with a small gap between the sections. This venting will keep the umbrella from "popping" upward with a gust of wind, thereby relieving some of the torque of the wind against the splines. NO, I don't think it is "windproof" -- just "gust-proof" at least to a degree. The button that opens the umbrella, is also used to "collapse" the umbrella -- not a thin button somewhere up near the top like many older umbrella -- so it is more user-friendly in that it is easier to find, and easier to press. It does not completely close the umbrella -- you still have to squeeze the umbrella cape section down toward the handle until it "clicks" closed. (You can HEAR the spring re-compressing during this movement, and it is a ratchet-type closure, in that if you push it part way, it stays part way, does not pop back open if you let off the pressure -- so again, more user friendly than many older umbrellas). It DOES come with a cover sleeve, but the sleeve is very tight fitting, with no drawstring, so it is difficult to replace the cover after using the umbrella. It does fit, but I'd like it better if it had a wider opening, and a draw string to pull it tighter once the umbrella is inside. This is the only reason I gave this umbrella 4 stars instead of 5. In actual use, I would probably forego using the cover because it's too difficult to get it on! One last observation: the handle is VERY short. Only by using my bottom 3 fingers on the handle, and then gripping the post with my index finger and thumb was I able to hold the umbrella with any real control. If I held it in my thumb and first two fingers like I normally hold an umbrella, I had no control of it. But with the new grip, the control is great without tiring out my hand muscles. (So it was a learning curve -- I didn't deduct any stars for this). ... show more

  • Sturdy, compact umbrella
Color: Navy Blue-42in Size: 42 INCH
I got this to replace my old Totes umbrella that my parents gave to me that’s been used since the 80s. While that umbrella still works despite seeing lots of use, it doesn’t do a great job in windy conditions and the water soaks through the fabric in really wet conditions. This umbrella though, seems to hold up really well so far. The extra ribbing definitely adds to the sturdiness. I was was a little wary of the venting letting water seep through but those fears turned out to be mostly unfounded. Water will leak through the vents but only in really windy conditions, or if I accidentally tilt the umbrella too much. The handle is definitely on the small side, but I don’t mind it cuz it saves on space. The button to expand and collapse the umbrella is working well so far, but I do worry about longevity. I don’t have much luck with this type of spring loaded functionality of umbrellas and usually opt for manual open and closing, so I’ll have to see how long it last. Great value as of now! ... show more

  • Impressed
Color: Black-46in Size: 46 INCH
I was happily impressed with this umbrella. You know it is a quality umbrella when it doesn't become inverted with the wind. Once you push the button, the umbrella fully opens all in one motion which was a cool feature. I would say the size of the umbrella is good for one person, and it is light weight and durable. I think I'll need to get another one these. ... show more

  • Wind Resistant and easy to close!
Color: Burgundy-46in Size: 46 INCH
This umbrella is easy to carry as I often need one while taking the kids to their sports practice. It works well during sunny days, but during the rain with wind--it works the best. It has more ribs, ten, than other umbrellas I have, and the button has several presses for how tall you want the umbrella. This is convenient, especially during windy days. I like the deep red color as it makes it easy to spot in my giant bag. ... show more

  • Good umbrella, not really very small, good patent to open and close
Color: Navy Blue-42in Size: 42 INCH
This is not a small pocket umbrella, like e.g. Samsonite is selling, more compact size, but also due to its opening- and closing mechanism it is very sturdy and hopefully long-lasting. On the handle, which is a little short for longer walks, you find a button which opens the umbrella fully. When you press the button again it unfolds half and you have to pull down the unfolded umbrella all the way back towards the handle in order to reopen or store it. This is a little hard working but will become smoother eventually. The quality is very good. I have not tried it in very windy weather yet. It comes with a cover, which is quite easy to pull on and off. ... show more

  • Compact and Sturdy
Color: Navy Blue-42in Size: 42 INCH
I unfortunately haven't been able to use this in rain as it's been winter where I live. However I did open and close it several times. It seems that it will hold up well and it fits nicely in the center console of my car. The color is spot on, material of fabric and metal both seem quality. Would recommend! ... show more
