It comes with no software. You need to purchase an easy to use program or learn to use the free ones. It got the job done as far as engraving wood pieces and it can even cut thick cardstock. I'm a big crafter and maker and so a laser engraver was one of many tools in my toolbelt. I have a larger laser engraver, but it is so big and a hassle to clear a table and set it up that, generally, when I thought of something I wanted to engrave, I would deem it not worth the hassle and would find another way to mark or personalize the item instead. This little guy is a fraction of the size and the price and I can see I will be using it much more! It is lightweight and easy to leave out on a table or store on a cabinet or bookshelf. Bear in mind, this smaller machine doesn't necessarily limit you to engraving smaller items (even though it is big enough to do standard signs, business cards, luggage tags, smaller tiles, etc.) It only limits the area you can engrave in one pass. So, for example, if you want to add a name, recipe, or logo to a large cutting board, you just set the machine on top of the cutting board and it will still work. One lovely thing about this little machine is that it comes 85% assembled--this is not true of larger engravers! The full frame is already assembled and you just need to assemble the head. The machine comes with sunglasses, all tools needed for final assembly and calibration, and some balsa coasters for test prints. And I know reading the manual is passe, but this one actually has some really useful tables with recommended materials and print speeds, so I've kept mine handy. You will need Lightburn or a similar app/software to transfer your designs to the laser printer and control all settings, similar to any other CNC-style machine. The manual comes with QR codes for Lightburn, LaserGRBL, and CutX, so I'm assuming it's compatible with all three. I only have experience with Lightburn and it works well. As with all new tools or appliances, there is a bit of a learning curve, especially when it comes to (1) focusing the laser, and (2) figuring out what types of designs and materials lend themselves better to laser-engraving, but users who have experience with other CNC-type machines (vinyl cutters, 3D printers) will pick it up easily. I realize there are some name brand laser engravers on the market that are a little more plug and play--but also that cost over 10x as much as this! If you are wondering if laser engraving is a good fit for you, this is a great investment to try out the possibilities, even if the ultimate goal is to upgrade. For me, it made me realize I don't need an upgrade for my use case as I just use it to engrave some of the jewelry I make (in addition to occasional gifts, Christmas ornaments, etc.), and so it literally saved me thousands of dollars. This is a neat little engraver! I have used it for about two weeks now and the functionality is great in regard to ease of use & design. It’s not the fastest but it does very clean lines which I’m more concerned about. When I said little I mean it as the size is rather small which is a plus for me. It breaks down for storage very easily and I’d recommend this one overall considering the price point to quality. ... show more
