This is an amazing engraver for its price. I bought the 5 watt model. Yes it's not the most powerful and fastest one on the market, but for it being under $150 it has taught me so much about how to laser engrave different materials and has been super great for fun projects. It can cut through 3mm wood but you have to do several passes. I found running it at 700mm/minute with 15 passes is perfect for a really clean cut. But so far I've engraved slate, leather, and cutting boards. Highly recommend this for someone wanting to learn and to do it as a hobby. You will want the 20 watt unit if you're going to do this as a business as just a skate coaster takes just over an hour for me to engrave. But I plan on just using this for hobbies as I have a good day job and the market is so saturated with people already doing engraving for a business. This has a large enough work area to work with a full 12x12in piece of bass wood with room to spare. See video for demo. The assembly instructions are missing a lot of key steps, so if you look up a video on YouTube there's a guy who gives a very good step by step tutorial on assembling this and its super helpful. ... show more

Took a hot minute to put together and figure out. We have an Apple so the software has a 30 day trial. If you have a regular pc then the software to download is free. Never used anything like this before and it’s a big learning curve but the machine itself works great. I have engraved and cut balsam wood. ... show more

this is a great machine for beginners. I knew nothing about laser engravers when I got this and I was able to get it figured out enough to run projects the first day. My main con with it is it's extremely difficult to set up. I had to take it apart 4 times before I got it right. It's durable and not too big, which is great. I would recommend this so long as you have the patience to endure the initial set up! ... show more

    • Not worth the savings. You'll waste more material than the cost of the machine in very little time.

Maybe it was just mine, but after about a week of ownership and only a few projects completed the laser decided thatit just didn't like to perform tasks given to it. It would start up and run in lightburn software (sold separately and not cheap) and then anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes it would just dedcide to stop working with no reasons given. I have spent countless hours at this point trying to troubleshoot and correct issues, but without any luck. It did a full job yesterday and today it wouldn't even frame a project without freezing up, which beomes quite a chore just to reset. I have wasted so much material on this thing that I would almost need a double refund when I return it to break even. I never had any of these issues with my previous xtool device that worked flawlessly for more than 3 years and hundreds of projects. ... show more
