Bought for small chicken coop hen house. I like that this one is a simple on/off switch (two heat levels). Rather than relying on setting and such that might or might not come back on when the power goes out… this one is either on or off… period. I put it on an old school mechanical timer. 30 min on 30 min off during the day and then 1hr on and 30 minutes off at night. It’s kept an 8 hen house at mid-50s even on mid-20s nights. That was at level 1 power, I might have to bump it up to 2 when the colder wind and snow gets here. Recommend for simplicity to be reliably ON.

I chose this heater because it actually blows hot air versus a mat or other heater that uses ambient temperature. We have cold winters and 2 indoor/outdoor dogs who are not acclimated to stay outdoors 100% of the time. So I wanted them to have the option for a warm place if they so choose. It has 2 temperature options which I like so it can be used with varying outdoor temperatures. It does not have an auto feature but I believe you can buy a separate non-affiliated accessory that will kick it on once the outside temperature reaches a certain degree. It was very easy to install. During the winter, I covered the dog house and door with a thermal blanket. Occasionally, I would reach in to see how it compared to the outdoor temperature and it was very warm! Definitely warm enough for doggies with fur. We had no issues running it for days at a time. I would highly recommend.

Returned. Based on page 1 of the safety instructions (see photo), this unit cannot be safely used as advertised. It is specifically sold for dog house, hound kennel, cat cage or chick coop. However, page 1 Safety Instructions #1 says to avoid touching the unit with bare skin to avoid burns, and goes on to say that combustible materials (e.g., furniture, bedding, paper, etc.) should be kept at least 3 feet in front of and away from the sizes and rear of the unit. The advertised image (a dog house) would appear to be a typical size dog house. One image clearly states "Safe to Touch" in direct contradiction to the safety instructions. Other advertising images show dog and bedding in close proximity to the unit. Again, inconsistent with the safety instructions. Safety instructions also note that extreme caution is needed when operated around children or unattended. For me, if it's not safe for operation near children or unattended, why would I risk my feral cats' safety with it operating?

I purchased this for a large chicken coop (pictures so you can see the size of the coop). I thought for sure I would need to purchase 2, however was not looking to “heat” the coop to a warm temperature, more so just enough to ensure our hens don’t get frostbite. We mounted it on the coop interior wall and set the heater to run thru the night. Temp outside was 21 and starting temp in the coop was 32. Next morning, the inside temp in the coop was 43. Chickens were all safe and cozy! Hoping this lasts thru the winter, I am very impressed with how well this heated the coop!

I worry about my hens on nights when it goes below freezing. I hung 2 of these in my 12 X 10 coop and the girls are loving it! They seem very safe and I have not noticed any increase in my electric bill. I covered the coop , which has a metal roof but the walls are just made of hardware cloth ( the stiff metal screening with quarter inch square openings) so i draped the entire coop with 2 layers of plastic tarps , and with the 2 little heaters, it is actually a comfortable temperature in there. I had chicks one hen hatched out before a 3 days freeze and they were just fine.
