Great, worthwhile microphone

As a student, the primary, foremost reason I bought this microphone is for my online classes. I am taking language courses, I figured it was important that I could be understood clearly. The pricepoint isn't quite student-friendly, but I took its features into consideration before ordering. I do not regret the money I spent on it. USB C and aux connections are quite useful, being able to connect it to devices in different ways, as needed. Built in noise cancellation works well, and audio recording is a feature I find handy for several reasons. Multiple microphone modules, though I haven't quite used the omnidirectional one for anything yet, is a nice addition as well. Functioning as a bidirectional audio device is a clever feature, so I can use it as a microphone on a mobile device and still hear audio through headphones. The stand is clever as well, it's compact and keeps the microphone upright. Adjustable volume and gain are handy features. I use the audio recording feature primarily for note taking, pronunciation practicing, and music making. I have been working on improving my music playing skills, particularly I bought a ukulele some time ago to try to get into stringed instruments, and recording lets me hear again and again how I'm doing, as well as compose pieces together. With the noise cancellation, the microphone creates 2 versions of the recorded audio, with and without noise cancellation, which I also find handy. The mic can also play back its audio files, no need to get them off the device to listen back. All in all, for what I use it for, the Tula mic is great. An amazing portable microhone
The Tula has quickly become my favorite microphone. It feels fragile because of the weight and size, but it has proven to be extremely durable and I have seen no scratches from the metal stand that folds up and down. I use the Tula microphone to record my YouTube podcasts. I was struggling with other options because much of my recording is mobile and it proved too difficult to lug around the common microphones that the community considers standard. I eventually settled on using wireless earbuds and sacrificing quality for mobile recordings. I’m a huge yeti fan, but its size and build makes it hard to travel with. The Tula mic is not only durable, but it is by far the smallest and highest quality microphone compared to anything else offering the same features. I use the Tula as a usb mic, but I’ve actually seen it used it during an in-person interview running off the internal battery. I have literally changed none of the settings and I can’t tell any difference between the Tula and my previous microphone that cost just a little less. What you are paying for is the mobility that the Tula offers. Everyone may not need a digital recorder, especially as cell phones continue to improve their recording capabilities. But the Tula is portable, durable and semi-wireless, with all of the features that you can find on common industry-standard microphones. ... show more

There are a lot of mics that I've used, for recording vocals and instruments for music to foley and I can honestly say if used for the right purpose, it will sound good on anything you put it in front of it. I use mine for zoom and some on the go recordings and it has not given me anything bad, it all sounds good. It doesn't sound harsh or thin, it's exceptionally clean sounding. It's giving most mics that I have or had a run for their money in sound quality! It's solid in build and small in stature. For what it does I don't think you will find a better sounding microphone. As far as I Know it zooms pass all mics in its price point. For some the price might be steep but looking at all its features and build quality with built-in noise cancellation feature It's a true masterpiece to have that's why I am getting two more. ... show more

Musicians beware. Not for loud environments.
NOT for recording band practice. This mic is very good for exactly what it is advertised to do. Vlogging, YouTubing and general speech from behind a computer and in the field as a handheld mic to capture speech. But that is literally it. It cannot handle loud singing or loud instruments at all without distorting. It’s very unfortunate because it really is a great little mic. I’m looking forward to seeing what other iterations are to come in the future. That being said, it looks and sounds great. It’s classy looking for one. It’s compact. It’s easy to use and it is very sensitive. It’s a substantial upgrade from my Logitech camera microphone. Also, the Uni/Omni mode is a nice touch. And I must say, the noise cancellation feature works VERY well. No more fan noise or ambient noise in your podcasts! At 3 feet from the mic, the low end is still very full and pleasing. It does not need to be right up in your face to be usable. My only gripe, beyond it being useless in loud musical environments, is that it is pretty sibilant. The high end is extremely present. This could be a good thing for some people who want that, as it is very clear (while also remaining very full sounding even at a relatively significant distance for a larger diaphragm mic). But I can see how the highs could be problematic for some. Overall, it does exactly what it’s advertised to do very well. Do not expect it to do anything above and beyond it’s stated purpose. I would definitely recommend this mic to my friends who do anything involving speech on their computer or in the field. Great job! PS: I do wish it came with a pouch of some sort. ... show more

This thing is incredible
After trying some lesser mics for zoom calls etc, I got this mic when I had to record some VO for my job (my job is NOT VO, I just sometimes make video deliverables). The sound quality is incredible and the features are so useful (monitoring and gain adjustment). I didn't know that I needed this but now it is so obvious. It is really small too! I do wish that you could just screw it in to a tripod or mic stand without having to keep track of the special adapter but that's a tiny nit pick. I'm not gaga about the retro styling, but it is so well made that it feels like a deal at this (rather high)price. If you're considering getting this thing, do it! ... show more

Capsule was rattling around loose

I've been watching reviews of this mic for a while and was excited to get mine, but a few things kind of took the wind out of my sails upon arrival. First off it feels a little cheaper in the hand than I was expecting. There's more plastic than I expected, and to me it feels like cheap plastic. I think the top part with the holes is aluminum, but the bottom part is plastic. Second thing I noticed is a small mark or scratch in the paint on the front plate that has the signature/logo on it. I'm including a photo. Ignore the fact that the signature is upside down... I always flip over the logos on my microphones. You'll see the mark between the logo and the LED. It's small, but not what I expected to see right out of the package. The third and most alarming thing was the rattling. If I rotated or gently shook the mic, it rattled. I disassembled the top part (this is how I discovered the logo plate can be flipped upside down) and found that the capsule (the part that picks up sound) was just rattling around loose, though still connected by two thin wires. There's a rubber shock mount in there that holds the capsule suspended in mid air so that vibrations or bumps against the outside casing of the device don't vibrate the capsule, and the capsule had come loose from the shock mount. I guess it just rattled around the whole time it was in shipping. I was easily able to press the capsule back into the circular rubber ring, but if it came out before, it might come out again one day. It's not a super snug fit. I hope the rattling didn't cause some micro damage that will lead to more problems down the road. The stand it comes with feels wobbly where it connects to the bottom of the device. I don't plan to use the stand anyway but figured I should mention it. Anyway, I tested it in a few different scenarios and it sounds great... I'm excited to use it... But it is not off to a great start. ... show more

It was nice while it lasted.
This was a nice little microphone. I mostly used it for Zoom calls. I liked the better dynamic range than my laptop built-in mic. Sometimes I would play a musical instrument through it, and the recording quality was quite good. However, after a few months of quietly sitting on my desk next to my laptop it just died. It doesn't work any more. When I attach it to a usb charger nothing lights up. It appears to be bricked. For such an expensive product, I really expected it to last longer than 3 or 4 months. The built in rechargeable battery does not appear to be consumer replaceable, otherwise I would probably try to order a replacement battery if I could find one. I have no idea if the battery is dead, or the charging circuitry. There is no easy way to tell. :-( sad face. I'll have to shop for a new microphone soon. I'm back to using my tinny laptop microphone. ... show more

Great...an issue...then great again

UPDATE May 31 2022: Adjusting rating to 5 stars since I was always happy with the sound quality of the mic for my use case and Tula responded immediately to my concern on what I thought was a bricked device. Through quick troubleshooting a firmware upgrade restored full functionality to my mic and I'm back in business. For those with any power issues reference firmware upgrade instructions on the Tula site for a possible fix. -----original review----- The Tula was a great smart looking and sounding mic for a work from home office environment with video conferencing needs. However it completely died within 6 months without being moved off my desk. The poor quality and lifespan of the mic is extremely frustrating. ... show more
