  • Think carefully
I bought this knowing I wouldn't use it on large, long pieces of wood. I've made nearly a half cord of kindling from both dry/seasoned wood and green (not dry) wood, from sizes about two fingers thickness up to wrist thickness with poplar (low density wood) up to willow oak (heavier dense wood). Let's lay out the pros: 1-Easy to take out of box and start using 2-Fairly simple design with a double x wedge/point design 3-Sturdy enough not to bolt down if only using it with smaller pieces 4-Seems like it will hold up okay with moderate use 5-Light enough to move around 6-Most wood under 6in in diameter and under 15inch in length split with no more than 4-5 whacks with a 3lb hand sledge hammer Let's lay out the cons: 1-For bigger pieces/heavier pieces the upward facing spike doesn't bite that well 2-I cannot recommend this for more dense woods like oaks/hickories, etc. 3-You're probably going to have to bolt it down tightly if looking to use it for larger pieces or if using say, 1-2x a week for 1/2hr here, 1/2hr there 4-The actual upward facing wedge design isn't as sturdy/thick as I would like; it may not hold up with frequent use, though so far it's doing okay 5-Repeated use will definitely require serious bolting down which reduces ease of maneuverability. Keep that in mind. All in all if you keep these in mind it will probably work for you. Recommend you keep an eye on the cross wedge. I have a feeling after several hundred pieces of wood driven through it might wear out; but we'll see. Also keep in mind that the upward spike which sits in the middle of the upward facing crossed wedge, didn't seem to bite and hold the wood steady to help guide it onto the wedge. This was more of a problem with trying a few greenwood pieces just to test it. Other than that, so far after making quite a bit of kindling it's doing okay for the money. ... show more

  • It splits wood as advertised!
Love it! Splits logs as advertised. Over 55yr old female and I use a weighted hammer ⚒️ and out comes 4 pieces small enough to use to start my fire! I don't really like swinging an axe anymore. This is safer bet for me.

  • Great splitter for the light work.
This is a great little product that works exactly as designed, but don't assume that you are slice though a bunch of big logs to split wood. The opening is only so big and thus, the wood you feed into it can only be so big to begin with. All of that said, this splitter is great for making kindling/small logs for a fire. An added bonus of the splitter is that you can take it on the go since it is relatively lightweight. (I threw it in the truck and took it camping.) Over all this is good stuff. ... show more

  • Difficult
Center 4 way bulb is too thick to handle recently felled trees. Works with very dry piles of wood. Doesn’t split green wood.

  • It's alright?
The blade dulls quickly and the center some tends to cause more resistance than anything else to getting new boards started. Works best on very small boards

  • Less cutting space
Opening is oval not circular so only smaller pieces of wood can be used then would have.

  • Meh
I really thought this was going to be great, but it splits wood horribly. Purchased a different one to compare, and its way better than this.

  • Works great when bolted to a tree stump
I attached the splitter to a tree stump and it makes all the difference. It works very well. I am very happy with the purchase
