Description

When the love of your life dies, the problem is not that some part of you dies too, which it does, but that some part of you is still alive. The death of legendary jazz trumpeter Joss Moody exposes an extraordinary secret. Unbeknown to all but his wife Millie, Joss was a woman living as a man. The discovery is most devastating for their adopted son, Colman, whose bewildered fury brings the press to the doorstep and sends his grieving mother to the sanctuary of a remote Scottish village.Winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize, Trumpet by Jackie Kay is a starkly beautiful modern classic about the lengths to which people will go for love. It is a moving story of a shared life founded on an intricate lie, of loving deception and lasting devotion, and of the intimate workings of the human heart. Read more

  • Extraordinary and sensuous
Format: Paperback
This extraordinary and sensuous novel is told primarily from the point of view of a son who is disgraced by his father's behavior and seeks revenge. This tale of secrets and betrayal is brilliantly handled. Every detail and every symbol has significance. The prose reads like a jazz composition.

  • Interesting Read
Format: Kindle
This story starts off strange, but it is a very interesting read. I wonder if it is based on the life of a real jazz musician. If you know somoene is is suffering from a crisis in identifying with their gender this book tackles that issue.

  • You Are Missing Out If You Don't Read This Book
Format: Paperback
I am constantly forcing other people to read this novel- the writing is tight and amazing, the characters are compelling and as the former partner of a transman, this gave a partner a voice that I found realistic and sad and wonderful. It's hard to find voices for transpeople and their partners in quality literature, but this met my needs to feel recognized and also should be counted as a contemporary classic novel. I've shared this book with multiple book-lovers and every single one has loved it (in fact, I'm not sure that my copy came back to me last time....). It may be time to buy this for myself again. ... show more

  • Eh.
Format: Paperback
This may be a tad biased because I was required to read this book for school, & I generally have a distaste for being assigned books I don't get to choose and having to write literary analysis on them. This book was okay and somewhat thought provoking, but ultimately I felt like there was really no point to it. I felt like at the end, nothing had really happened. The only real twist is at the beginning and after that, I felt like I was waiting through the entire book for something to happen. I wouldn't say it's bad, but It isn't my taste. ... show more

  • Beautiful writing
Format: Paperback
Jackie Kay writes like the poet she is. I read this book for my book club. Due to the subject matter, we had a very spirited discussion. I have recommended this book to anyone who likes good writing, loves music and has an open mind.

  • Trumpet is GENIUS
Format: Paperback
Trumpet is the current "read" for my Book Club. I can't wait for our discussion because I'm thinking we will all give it two thumbs up. (I SO LOVED ROGER EBERT. That last comment is dedicated to him.) The story line, the writing style, the format, the EVERYTHING ...Trumpet is GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Another great book from Jackie Kay
Jackie Kay's heritage gives a unique perspective to her novels. 'Trumpet' tells a wonderful story full of twists and turns all told with warmth and insight. A diverse range of characters entranced me as the story unfolded. I am now working my way through all her books.
