  • Works great, once you remember how it works...
Mine seemingly was DOA. Plugged it in, got no signal. Repeated this about 10 times. Then I remembered I had to turn on +48v phantom power... lol Works great now!

  • Paired with Shure SM57
This is a necessity if you record vocals with a Shure SM57 or SM58. Cut out my ground loop and now I don't need to turn up the gain on my pre-amp a ton.

  • INCREDIBLE PRODUCT
Amazing. A more efficient version of the cloudlifter for 1/3 the price. My Gain knob went from 90% to 30% for the same volume. Noise floor got much better too. Even for my loud room, with the lowest threshold on my noise gate it's pure silence .

  • Solid Product for Streamers
I was using a Cloudlifter, but getting a ton of interference because of the extra XLR cable run near my metal desk and PC. Switched to the FetHead and it produced more gain cleanly without running an extra cable. Currently paired with the Elgato Wave XLR, Mogami XLR Cable, and SM7B.

  • Drives my RE20 well
Needed to buy to to use my RE20 with MOTU M4, as on M4 alone I needed to put gain to the max to get at least some sound

  • good product, but do your research
first of all, any trouble i had with this preamp were my fault for not doing more research beforehand. that said, i feel like i should warn anyone who is in the same spot as me that this product will not work with a condenser microphone unless you buy a secondary phantom power source. the initial reason i bought this was because i had bought an at2020 condenser mic that i had hooked up to a cheap mixer. this was working fine (the mixer had 48v phantom power), but it was extremely quiet. if i cranked the mixer volume and gain all the way up, it would be at a barely reasonable volume, but with a lot of noise coming from the mixer. to solve this i figured i would amplify the microphone before it got to the mixer, and an inline preamp like this seemed like the best choice. it turns out i didn't read the fine print, and when i plugged in the preamp i got no sound whatsoever. it turns out that the preamp steals all of the phantom power from the mixer and leaves the condenser mic powerless. this isn't a problem for other types of microphones, but i didn't realize the difference at the time. the solution was to buy a seperate power source for the mic and let the preamp be powered by the mixer. it's a somewhat convoluted setup, but after figuring it all out, it totally works. i'm sure there are more elegant solutions (and maybe i could avoid the original problem altogether) but i'm happy with my hacked together solution. as for the product itself, i like that the form factor is small, the build quality is solid, and there is no extra noise added to the signal. it's dead simple to use, and it does what it advertises. i still wish the fact that it doesn't work with condenser mics was more prominent. maybe it's considered to be common knowlege, but it helps amateurs like me if you list potential problems like that on the store page. ... show more

  • Dynamic Mic Booster That Works
I have a simple recording setup where I have a dynamic microphone (SM57) connected to a USB audio interface on my PC (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2). It works just fine, but of course the pre-amps on that little interface are not as strong as those you would find on something like a stand-alone mixer. The result is that you have to turn up the gain on the pre-amp a lot to get a strong signal, and that also turns up the noise. Not ideal. One solution is to get a different kind of microphone, like a condenser, that uses phantom power. When I use such a mic with the audio interface the signal is very hot. I have to turn the pre-amps way down. This little Fethead is the other solution. You turn on the phantom power on the interface, which the dynamic mic doesn't require. The fethead then uses the phantom power to amplify the mic before the pre-amp. It's a pre-pre amp. This amplification happens before all the noise from the pre-amp comes into play, so noise stays low and your voice goes up. Now you can turn the pre-amps on the audio interface down low just like with a condenser mic. It's just one solution to a problem of many. Instead of getting this you could get a non-dynamic mic. You could get better pre-amps. You could get a different audio interface or mixer. It really depends on your situation if this is going to be the right answer. But if it is the answer you are looking for, it absolutely works. There are only two very minor negative things I can say about it. One kind of obvious thing is that it effectively makes your microphone longer. This almost never matters, but there are definitely situations where it could. The other is that while it won't amplify noise in your pre-amp it could amplify noise from the environment. Thanks to the fethead, I discovered that some LED lights I have were emitting sound at a particular frequency. Without the fethead, my microphone was not picking up that noise enough for it to show up on a recording. But with the fethead, suddenly I could see a straight horizontal line in the scope clear as day. Make sure you only use this in an environment without that kind of interference that could mess up your recording. ... show more

  • Works great with my Sennheiser 421 and beta 57
I I have a focusrite Clarett plus which is a great interface it just did not have enough gain that I needed for my dynamic mics. I bought this and it works really well no need to spend more on something else. Highly recommended for the money!

  • Ok for spoken word
If you have a mic that needs a ton of gain I can understand how this can help but with that saying newer interfaces probably have better preamps than this as terms of quality. For spoken word it sounds ok and provides the gain it is suppose to. Problem is the gain sounds boxy , it's clean but it changes the characteristics of the mic for the worse. You would be better off to save your money and get a preamp with +20db switch ... show more

  • Quality Improvement for a Great Price
I recently switched to a cheaper mixer that doesn't power my Shure SM7B as well as my older one (gave to a friend, thought I'd try a new brand of interface) That said interfaces pre-amp is not as good as my older one, If anyone has it I posted my new settings in the pictures provided. The Elgato Wave XLR. The Shure SM7B is a notorious power hungry dynamic microphone, at first I didn't think I needed a gain boost. But I took the plunge to try this FetHead. I've heard between this and the cloudlifter would be great options but I didn't like how I needed an additional XLR cable just to boost my gain. This FetHead fits what I wanted perfectly and it's improvement surprised me a lot more than I would've thought. I didn't realize the amount of pre-amp noise I was generating before this FetHead, it not only removed the noise from the pre-amp, but the overall noise floor is a lot lower as well. My voice gets picked up a lot easier without any boosting like I did before. The build is clean and rugged, the packaging was convenient and small. Just remmember to enable Phantom Power to your mixer to make this work properly, even IF you're using a Dynamic Mic!!! Highly recommended! • Amazing results while maintaining a small foot print.
This past year, I've struggled with my microphone's gain since I'm practically yelling at the top of my lungs with my Shure SM57. I couldn't seem to get my voice loud enough, even with system wide post processing and my gain set to max on my audio interface. My hope was to use this mic for chat, some streaming, and music production. Thinking back now, I should've conducted more research with my gear and how low of a sensitivity the SM57 was. At the time, I was still a bit new to microphones, and what setup would pair well with each other. At the start of 2020, I had started off with a Shure SM57 & a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 1, and boy did I learn the hard way about how much power was needed to push that mic to the point where people can actually hear me without the mic sitting inside my mouth essentially. Over time I've learned to cope with this handicap. That is until recently, where I started to do more research into my predicament and what possible ways I can go about to remedy this situation. I stumbled upon two choices, the Cloudlifter, and Fethead. Since i'm in a spot where space is limited on my work area, I resorted to the Fethead (I also liked the look of it as well). And man, let me tell you the relief that I had when I first attached it onto my mic. My voice still sounded clear, with just a small amount of hiss, but that is almost inaudible. The Fethead seamlessly attaches to the mic via Female XLR on one side to Male XLR on the other, meaning I wouldn't have to deal with having to use another XLR cable if I had gone with the Cloudlifter. I can honestly say that this was such a massive improvement, without having to buy a whole new setup. I recently switched over to the Motu M2, so I only did some tests between the M2 and the Komplete Audio. I found the M2 to work very well paired with the Fethead, and does sound just as clear without the Fethead (Though you'll still get some humming at higher gains). The Komplete Audio also sounded great, but definitely needed more gain compared. Overall, the Fethead is an amazing purchase if you need the extra boost in gains without sacrificing too much in terms of audio quality. ... show more

  • A must have for Scarlett interfaces
As a voice over artist, musician, vocalist, and streamer, I’m always trying to stay on top of the quality in my work. I ordered this product for my SM7B because there wasn’t enough phantom power coming from my Scarlett 18i8. Once added in line, there was an instant improvement and I no longer had to max out the gain channel. I’m writing this review because I literally just ordered a second unit to use with my Rode NT1 so that I can stop having to manually boost the db in OBS causing a crackling sound in the digital boost. UPDATE: I had received my second one, then realized that this is NOT for condenser mics. That one was on me, and I am not returning my second triton because it's entirely worth having a backup. Love this product! ... show more
