Features

  • The Original Wood Finish provides a soft, warm, glowing finish and unparalled grain enhancement without masking the beauty or texture like a film finish would.
  • Made from 100% Renewable, natural, food & skin contact safe ingredients. Just linseed oil & beeswax. No need for PPE or ventilation while using. Petrochemical Free, Heavy Metal Free.
  • Beeswax is the best moisture barrier that nature has to offer so this is ideal for food contact applications, baby products, or pet's toys. It can also be used as a sealant over milk paint, penetrating oil-based stains, other natural oil finishes.
  • Excellent finish for cabinetry, butcher block, furniture, tool handles, raised garden beds, wooden doors and trim, friction polishing turned pieces and any other application where linseed oil and beeswax would have been traditionally used.
  • Tried & True products have infinite repairability and will last longer than a lifetime when properly maintained. No yellow plastic flakes as they age! These are 100% solids (no fillers, no solvents) so a little bit goes a very long way.

Description

Tried & True was first conceived around 1990 when a master cabinet maker in upstate New York became concerned over the amount of toxins that he was exposed to on a daily basis and thought, "How did people create pieces that last hundreds of years in a time when todays solvents and chemicals were unknown?" This question led to years of research centered around Shaker and early American woodworking and finishing, resulting in a line of products based on natural linseed (flax) oil and additives (beeswax, pine resin) that would have been available on an early American frontier with no modern processing. Every Tried & True product is made from 100% renewable ingredients and free from all solvents, has 0 VOCs, no synthetic compounds, no toxic heavy metal drying agents or anything else that could be harmful to humans, pets or planet.

  • Can’t say enough good things about this product!
Material Type: Other Size: Gallon
We’ve used polyurethanes and other sealer / protectants in the past. But for our current project (a food surface), we wanted something more natural. One of our sons recommended Tried and True. I’m so glad we tried this. It’s simple ingredients (no gnarly stuff) and gives a beautiful finish. (I’ve included before and after photos.) First, it’s all natural linseed oil (flaxseed oil) and beeswax. That’s it. No chemicals, no smelly fumes, no worry about getting it on your skin. In fact, it felt wonderful to rub it into our dry hands after working with the wood all day. It goes on super easy with an old tshirt cloth. Wait one hour, wipe off any excess, then rub with 0000 steel wool. Beautiful! It’s water resistant. (Not water proof). Feels lovely to the touch. Before applying the first coat, be sure to sand well. We found that wetting our maple slab after a 120-grit sand helped pull up the grain. Then we sanded again with 240. Then wet it again to pull up the grain, then sanded again with 320. Wet it again and sanded with 400. THEN we applied the first coat. We’ll likely do a second application in a few days. I highly recommend this product and will definitely be buying more for future projects. But lucky us, a little goes a long way. We bought a gallon to cover a 6-foot maple slab (2.5”thick), and we used maybe an eighth of the gallon for one application. ... show more

  • Great finish
Material Type: Other Size: Quart
The product is very easily applied to the wooden surface. It does take a bit long to dry and become workable. I am very satisfied with the finished product.

  • Feels great, was easy to apply
Material Type: Other Size: 8oz
Used it to finish a guitar speaker cabinet. I didn’t find it difficult to apply, just file the directions and use very sparingly. Feels great when dried, has a nice sheen to it, but not glossy. I did notice that a wipe down with a damp cloth caused it to haze, which buffed out with a dry cloth easily. It seems to have stopped the hazing several weeks after application. ... show more

  • Amazing Finish on Valuable Chair - and Review problems have been solved
Material Type: Other Size: Pint
Past reviews criticized the shipping of the T&T wood finish can. From the picture posted its obvious that the problem is solved. My can arrived two days ago with metal clamps on the lid, careful cushion packing around the can and a thick box. I used the contents to refinish a valuable Thomas Moser "Lolling" chair, ottoman and side table that have not been polished or finished since 2009 when they were made. The difference is AMAZING. Notice the picture of the arm where years of wet hands have stained the wood - then look at the same arm after 0000 steel wool and the T&T was applied. I'm sold. The side table top had faded in areas where the light hit around a box that was stored on top - and again with the 0000 steel wool and then the T&T finish the light area is gone and the top is restored. Recommend that you use the T&T process for refinishing wood - from their website: • Burnish with a soft cloth or 0000 steel wool BEFORE EVERY COAT (even the first and last.) The more you rub the better it will look. • Apply a very thin coat across entire piece with a lint-free cloth at room temperature. A color change from dry to wet should occur. DO NOT USE A BRUSH TO APPLY! • Allow finish to penetrate the wood for a minimum of 60 minutes. • Rub in briskly with a lint-free cloth until the surface is completely dry. DO THIS BEFORE YOU LET THE PIECE CURE! Drying/curing issues will occur if this step is ignored! • Allow the piece to cure for a minimum of 24 hours. • Additional coats will deepen the shine and increase protection. Do not attempt to apply more than three coats of the Original Wood Finish! • Care & Maintenance: Use a soft shammy cloth to polish any dull areas. • To repair any scratches, nicks, or water marks: Use 0000 grade steel wool to buff out as much of the affected area as possible. Then, use a lint-free cloth to apply a small amount of the Original Wood Finish to the damage wood. Follow the normal recommended application directions. For watermarks — if damage is severe, sand water mark away using fine grit sand paper until it is smooth and even with the surrounding surface. Reapply the Original Wood Finish to the water mark by following the normal recommended application directions. Remember to always protect the wood surface using coasters or anti-scalding devices. My chair, ottoman and side table look new! A few small scratches have all but disappeared. What is not to like? I'm sold. ... show more

  • 1st Time Stripping & Refinishing Anything!
Material Type: Other Size: Pint
I chose Tried & True Original wood finish to re-finish my dining table because it’s nontoxic and environmentally friendly. For a beginner, I’m pretty impressed with my results. I did all the sanding, stripping, and finishing in my small apartment, with a little help from some YouTube videos! Although I was hoping this finish wouldn’t alter the color of the grain too much, I’m still pretty impressed with the way it turned out. To strip my table, I used a portable Dremel sander with 80-220 grit sand paper, and since I live in Southern California, (where Mineral Spirits and paint thinners are banned), I used Citristrip to remove any paint that was impossible to sand off, and applied hot distilled vinegar, with a paint brush to remove the Citristrip residue using a putty knife, souring pads, and steel wool. Then I hand sanded it once more and used steel wool to dry-burnish the table. To finish it, I applied Tried & True with small pieces of an old tee-shirt. To increase the sheen, I used 0000 Steel Wool, and a clean microfiber cloth in between coats. Onec each coat was applied, I wiped off the residual finish with a 100% natural Chamois.
