  • This thing rocks and is worth 5 stars if you don't let a Windows Setting hold you back!
This thing rocks and I get the speed and reliability it advertises. It is also able to negotiate and work in areas other normal USB WIFI devices cannot. I usually do gaming with a hard wired connection but I decided to see how it would be if I just used wireless. It worked flawlessly and my experience was the same. Ran LAN tests and it ran with flying colors so if you have internet issues I wouldn't be too quick to blame the device. I have noticed a lot of complaints about it dropping out but this type of problem is not unique to this USB device. It can happen to almost all brands and it is not their fault. In almost all cases a Windows setting is to blame not the device. In Windows if you go to Device Manager > Network Adapter > TRENDnet TEW-809UB AC1900Wireless USB Adapter > Right Click > Select Properties > Power Management > and uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' > Hit OK and reboot you will be rocking steady for the life of the device. If you still have some issues I would investigate other things before being quick to blame this device. The Internet Modem or stability of the ISP network play a big factor as well. Another thing that is good to do is download an App and analyze the WIFI channels in your area to see if someone is saturating your signal and adjust your router accordingly. In summary I love this thing and would recommend it to others. In most cases you can achieve the 5 stars you desire with this device and others if you adjust the windows setting above. I even attached a Picture for reference. The guy who created and buried this setting in the Network Adapter and made it default is the one that should get some stars docked. I mean, who would ever want their network devices to be shut off by default and without their knowledge? Sure, if someone wants to shut off their adapter then by all means leave the option for them to go in and check the box, but don't force it on someone. My heart goes out to the Millions of poor souls who just want a stable wireless network and this little bright idea caused them to lose hair, scream profanities, and assume it was the device. I also feel sorry for the Companies that build rock solid equipment only to have a buried windows setting they don't control turn off their device and render it unstable and useless for their customers. That is not to say a Company wont have an occasional device break ranks and have issues or some accident we don't see that renders it useless in transit but that is what returns and a second chance is for. Don't let that windows setting ruin your dreams and hold you back from giving this thing 5 stars. ... show more

  • Device could not find any wireless networks, tech support not helpful
I ordered this to replace my Netgear wireless USB adapter and this device was recommended by a few sites and had pretty good reviews. The package arrived with no evidence of outer damage, and I don't suspect internal damage to the device. I followed the basic directions for installation and installed the driver via the included CD. My Windows 10 PC showed that the device was "working" in Device Manager, but the network settings showed that there were no available wifi networks in range. This is weird since I can generally see 4-6 other networks with other USB adapters. I uninstalled drivers manually, reinstalled, disabled/enabled the device, ran some console commands, turned my machine off and on again, etc etc etc but nothing ever got it past the issue of it just not seeing wifi networks. I called TRENDnet tech support, but the person I spoke with didn't really have the technical knowledge to troubleshoot this specific issue. One decent idea that came out of that call was to test the USB adapter on a different machine, which I completely missed in my own troubleshooting steps. It was a great idea until I realized that my other machine is a Macbook Pro and the driver doesn't support my newer MacOS. I think I've exhausted the reasonable steps a customer should take to get devices like this to work, so I think I'm just going to return it. This was my first impression of a TRENDnet product, and I will most likely avoid the brand completely going forward. ... show more

  • Cuts off and reconnects constantly
It has great range, sure, but it keeps doing as the title says. It's insanely annoying. I tried multiple drivers and it always does the same thing. The other cons are that it's ugly and huge. The only pro besides range is that, because it's connected via a cable, you can position is however you like or hide it. Where with other USB adapters or PCI-E it sticks out of your PC. If only it were reliable returning and sticking to a cheaper one I had. ... show more

  • Took a Nighthawk 1900 AC with bad connection and did a few things
Day 1: 4/5 stars. Simple, small, functional extender. OSX install requires a reboot and security elevation - but I can confirm it's still working on MacOS High Sierra. Also, I ordered at 11:50AM and had by 7PM - so one of these stars goes to Amazon Prime. Took a Nighthawk 1900 AC with bad connection and did a few things: 1. Allowed me to actually connect where my 2015 MBP wouldn't connect on 1300 Mbps 2. Raised my basement throughput from 30Mbps to 210Mbps (partially because of the hike in rate of the 5Ghz connection) 3. Gave me a secondary GUI for WiFi connection that is decent. Device is well sized... could probably put the 4 antenna in the elastic pen holders that's in travel backpacks -- they are dead simple to remove. Still want to connect it to my USB 3.0 hub and stress test during other heavy software developer conditions, but so far I'm golden. I'll update this if it gets better or worse - but it was worth video calls not having jitter for me. ... show more
