The Trend Lapping Fluid is better than plain water for lubricating the surface of the stone, and other lubricants such as WD 40 are too thick, which results in your tool skating over the diamond surface. Using water or water-based products on your sharpening stone may result in rusting, since nickel (the bonding medium for the electroplating process) is porous.
