🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Traxxas Rustler RC car leaves majority of its users impressed with its speed, versatility, and durability. Reviewers highlight its capability to handle various environments, from pavement racing to off-roading. However, they also note the need for potential upgrades as parts tend to break - though these breaks are attributed to the rigorous use that the car is subject to and is a common factor in RC cars overall. Additionally, the RC car doesn’t come with necessary elements like batteries and a charger, which add to the overall cost.

Pros

  • 🔥 Impressive speed and power
  • 🏞️ Versatile enough for off-roading and pavement racing
  • 🏎️ Good entry-level RC car for beginners
  • 💪 Durable and robust for the most part

Cons

  • ❗ Potential for parts to break with rigorous use
  • 💰 Additional costs for necessary parts/elements (batteries and charger)
  • ⚙️ Frequent need for upgrades and replacements
  • ☀️ Overheating issue with 3s battery

Should I Buy It?

If you're looking for an entry-level RC car that provides a mix of speed, durability and versatility, the Traxxas Rustler is an excellent choice. Keep in mind there will be additional costs for batteries and a charger, and possibly for upgrades and replacements, reflecting your usage level. However, if you're comfortable with this aspect and see it as part of the fun and learning experience, it's definitely worth the investment.

  • Lots of fun, but also be prepared for some immediate repairs/upgrades
So I've had the Rustler for a couple months now and I am happy with it overall. It's my first "real" RC car, and was hopeful to not have to dive into repairs right away, but that's just not reality. From the research I have done, that's just not the case for any RC car if you are playing hard - and this one is no different. You are going to have to be prepared for some upgrades/replacements, and after you get your head wrapped around that, you'll appreciate this is one heck of a cool car (but don't pay the price fluctuation that goes up and down on this - I've seen it anywhere from $399 to over $500 (as it is now of this posting). Don't pay a penny more than $399 - wait out the price to drop again - or buy direct from Traxxas - their all the time price is $419). So the first day out it's a slightly warmer winter day than usual (75ish) and I'm having some fun out back some light jumps, just getting the feel for it and it stops every 8-10 mins of use. I'm running a 3s battery and what was happening was it kept overheating (and this was still running in 50% training mode). I do a little research and this, unfortunately, is very typical. So, I had to run out to the hobby shop and get an ESC fan to deal with that issue. Easy install (about 30 seconds) and completely solved the problem, but $25 add on. If you are running 3s, don't even bother running this vehicle without getting an ESC fan. It's just a 100% necessity. So next issue (again on the first weekend) was I clipped a rock that was sticking out of the ground on the undercarriage causing it to get some air, but upon landing I lost steering. The cause was a tooth on one of the gears in the steering servo broke (baseline ones are plastic - for whatever reason). Not a terribly pricey repair (about $20 to get a metal gear replacement kit - and I have recently seen you can find some aftermarket complete servos that are cheaper than that), but the servo is buried underneath everything, so I was forced to get to know this car and the details pretty quick. If I knew my way around the RC car world I imagine I could have done the repair in about 20 mins or so, but it took me about 2 hours as I was slowly working my way through things. Second weekend out one of the differential yokes from the rear half shaft broke (I was playing pretty hard with it, kinda testing the limits). Like most everything else, it was plastic, and I had to do a repair. Rather than putting back a plastic yoke, I took the opportunity to upgrade the rear shafts to MIP aluminum in hopes I won't run into the issue anytime soon. Moving forward this will be my approach - I am not going to upgrade anything that isn't broke, but when it does break, I will upgrade it accordingly to a metal or better alternative pending availability. So that's all the issues I have had so far, but let me tell you I love this thing. Handles great, fast as heck, can take a beating generally and keep on going. 4WD is great - my son and I create off road challenges uphill through rough paths and the Rustler handles it quick well. At first I was a little upset about having to do repairs immediately, but it was not a bad thing and actually kinda fun and caused me to get to understand the car much more than I would have otherwise. So, in summary, as long as you understand that this vehicle is going to require some downtime for fixes occasionally, you will love it as I do. ... show more

  • Good RC
I nought a pos legendary and did homework. Traxxas is rated one of the highest of rc's. After purchasing it, did not know it didn't come with a battery, so there is another $100. Also, no charger, there is another $100. Then it needs upgrades because it is a beast, and the plastic parts won't last. So, the Rustler is like $$458, then after everything I just mentioned, your pushing $1000. I only bought this for my dog, but have become to like this way more than the pos legendary. If you have the money, not a bad buy, but expensive ... show more

  • Awesome all terrain car!
Absolutely love this thing, you can make it wicked fast for the pavement, or you can rip it thru some pretty tall grass with ease, loose rocky dirt, gravel, it does great everywhere I have taken it. I also put the Sledgehammer tires on it (Traxxas Part No. 6792) gives much more ground clearance and performs even better off road! This thing is a great in between for high speed pavement running and wild off roading. If you want both sides of an off-road monster truck, and a quick on-road racer this car is excellent for it. Make sure you educate yourself on the workings of gearing and motor temps. Putting in high speed gearing then ripping thru tall grass puts it into thermal shutdown pretty quickly, gear appropriately for your terrain and tires, invest in some motor and ESC cooling, and just have fun! Great car for someone who just wants some all around performance, this car is very adaptable to what you want to do with it! ... show more

  • THESE ARE AWESOME FUN!
Purchased for my son for Christmas, but we both have so much fun with it. Given how fast these are, you should start out with wide open space. Some of the plastic parts, including the gears in the steering servo, are cheap, so you will likely be replacing them. That is why i'm giving only 4 stars. But, upgrading to a better servo with metal gears, and other upgraded tougher components is kinda par for the course with RC vehicles.. planes, cars, boats, etc. It is actually just part of the fun. We bought some seriously upgraded batteries to go with it, so you might want to consider that and a charger capable of charging one battery at a time. ... show more

  • Update, long term review
Great car after some upgrades. I didnt wait around for stuff to break or really ever get too dirty. I replaced the shocks with gtr and the drive shafts with gpm metal ones. All together an upgrade of less than 140 bucks and now the truck is a monster. It keeps up with my xmaxx and when something breaks its much cheaper to fix. Only break ive had so far is the bead came off a tire but when running 3s with a 13 tooth pinion this will happen sometimes. Glued it back on and good as new. For those wanting a solid start into a great but expensive hobby i highly recommend this car. Then if you want to upgrade to an erevo or xmaxx they will feel like lumbering giants after learning how to drive this car. It is ridiculously fast even out of the box on 3s. 2s aint bad but 3s is where its at if you upgrade a bit ... show more

  • Rustler Runs great But
Got may rustler 3 weeks ago and broke something ever time I use it. Luck for me Robs hobby is around the corner from me. But its OK for me I like trashing it. So I know I am going to break it. Won't have any other way. It can kick up a lot of sand, so I clean after ever use, Wheelies tell it flies off the ground. Jumps tell it brakes. I am Using 5000 3 cell lipo from my Traxxas Aton Drone. When the 2 front shock blow out broke steering servo, arms, arms and shock tower and steering hubs. used auto flip 3rd time strip the gear Not recommending unless your on a track Use fans now, if it gets hot it just stops. which is good but normal you got to go chase it down. So if you can handle repair it as part of the fun. Rustler VXL is Great ... show more
