  • Beautiful and functional but that price -- ouch!
Size: One Size Color: Raindrop
I have to admit I have never owned a totes umbrella until recently, I have a champion one which I love and has served me well so I had stuck with that brand. My recent experience with a totes umbrella convinced me to give this one a try. First of all, this umbrella is an Anniversary version which appears to mean the pricing is where it is. MSRP is $100, and the current listing is $75. For me that is a really pricey umbrella, my Champion was $25. This umbrella is truly gorgeous -- I love the black and white pattern. The umbrella is a sturdy build from the handle to the end of the shield. The handle is a curved J shape. At first I thought my handle was defective as it has a lot of "personality" -- dark and light spots -- but the listing says that it is made from real wood so that would explain the differences. The umbrella has good weight to it, which gives it a real quality feel, but I think if I were to hold it for long term (say at a track meet or at the pool for sun or rain protection) it would result in hand fatigue. The gold accents add to the appearance. The push button is gold and has a curve to fit your thumb or finger. Unlike some umbrellas that pop up fast enough to put an eye out, this one opens slow and smooth. To close it you need to pull the inside runner (the plastic thing that slides up and down) down. There is a thick leather strap to hold the umbrella closed with a snap. Unfortunately, the thickness causes the umbrella to droop a bit where it attaches when the umbrella is not strapped closed. I worry that will cause early wear but only time will tell. The bar of the umbrella is wide and sturdy and I have had no issues with it bending or warping. The canopy is not vented (my champion is) so you will have to watch that it doesn't blow inside out like other umbrellas. The fabric is thick and sturdy. The umbrella is large enough to keep me completely dry, but on the small side if trying to cover two people despite being advertised as sized for two people. We've had a fairly solid two weeks of rain so it has seen a lot of use, but I find that I reach for my other umbrella solely for the handle comfort and convenience. This would be a nice social umbrella, but for utility it has some shortcomings. There are a lot of nice tweaks to make this an "anniversary" version but some of the tweaks - like the leather strap and wood handle, actually seem to be negatives versus a benefit. • Stylish, nicely designed, well-crafted 50th Anniversary umbrella from totes
Size: One Size Color: Dark Plaid
The totes 50th Anniversary Auto-Open Stick Umbrella is a nicely designed and well-crafted umbrella. It's a delight to use, in a world in which well-made products seem to be a thing of the past. VINTAGE STYLE: The style is very classic, a vintage English style: - The canopy of the umbrella has more of a curve than many umbrellas, and is about 11 inches in height when opened. - The wooden J-shaped handle of this model is made from oak, according to the tag, and appears to be stained black. I find J handles to be easier to hold, and usefully able to hang off an arm or a bag when I don't have a hand free. - The gold accents (on the tip, ribs, tie strap snap and opening button) are tasteful. - The shaft has a very subtle black and gray pattern. - The tie strap, which holds the umbrella tightly closed when not in use, uses a snap and is about 7/8" wide, in a nice material that I'd guess to be a synthetic leather. - To me the umbrella seems light, given the size and sturdiness. On my scale, it measures 1.5 pounds. 16 RIBS: Around the inside of the umbrella are 16 fiberglass ribs, an impressive and sturdy structure, and an unusually nice feature. OPENS SMOOTHLY AND SLOWLY: The umbrella opens smoothly and slowly, rather than with an unwieldy snap. It's very satisfying. THE FABRIC IS A NICE TOUCH: I received the style that Amazon currently describes as "dark plaid." In fact, it is a fairly subtle, repeating geometric design across the fabric, perhaps a T or I repeated, printed or stenciled on the outside of the canopy in a slightly shiny material. (The pattern is not visible from the inside.) It's a nice touch, adding some interest without drawing too much attention. From a distance, the fabric merely looks black. The detail is seen with a closer look. (I'd post photos, but Amazon seems to have disabled that feature.) 43 INCH DIAMETER: The canopy is described as 50 inches in the tag attached to the umbrella, but it's important to realize that's the measured along the arc or the circumference (which is the standard, not terribly useful way to measure umbrellas). The diameter is more nearly 43 inches (measuring across the fabric, not to the tip of the ribs). And thank goodness, as it is quite large enough. LIFETIME WARRANTY: totes offers a limited lifetime warranty. Return the product with a $5.00 postage and handling fee. The handle is about 7 inches, and the overall length is about 36-3/4 inches. The umbrella I received was made in China. ... show more

  • You'll be well covered with this umbrella!
Size: One Size Color: Sprinkles
I only buy Totes umbrellas. We have them in the car, hanging near the front door, under a car seat, you name it. I always buy the small ones though that come with a cover that within a month, I lose it. Now, this is an umbrella! Look wise, it is just downright classy! It looks vintage but with a lot of class to it. No cover of course, I’d only lose it anyway. It has a beautiful strap that opens it and the one push button. When my daughter and I opened it, we just laughed. It is huge! There is no way we are going to get wet under this thing! It is almost 4 feet! We also laughed because the one we picked out has sprinkles all over it, we felt like a cupcake under it. We will be keeping this in the trunk of the car. It is perfect for trips to the store where you want to cover two or more people. There is no losing this umbrella, it is big enough. Honestly, you could use it as a weapon if needed. It has a sharp tip to it. The next two days we are getting a lot of rain here in NC and I hope we get to try it out. We are under stay home orders due to the virus but perhaps we can use it for making trips to the mailbox. It’s a lovely umbrella! ... show more
