Features

  • TWO-PART, MARINE GRADE EXPANDING FOAM cures very hard and rigid, with high compressive strength ideal for a number of marine and residential applications, including structural reinforcement, architectural castings, art projects and flotation
  • 6 POUNDS PER CUBIC FOOT HIGH-DENSITY FORMULA is perfect for casting, carving, sculpture, plug making, sign making, flotation for boats and buoys, floating decoys, part fabrication, replicating wooden parts, rigidifying, structural support and more
  • FAST-SETTING, CURES TO A 94% CLOSED CELL FOAM, where each cell traps air and prevents liquids such as water, gas, and oil from penetrating; once fully cured, foam is compatible with epoxy, polyester or vinyl ester resins, and can be painted
  • IDEAL WORKING TEMPERATURE IS 75-85F. Proper temperature, mixing, timing and venting are critical for proper foam expansion; below 75F expansion decreases; the foam expands rapidly after mixing, so prep the surface in advance and be ready to pour
  • AVAILABLE IN A 2 QUART KIT AND A 2 GALLON KIT. Yield: 2-Quart Kit 3/4 cubic ft, 2-Gallon Kit 3 cubic ft; Flotation Range for 6lb foam: 23 lbs per mixed 2 quart kit and 92 lbs per mixed 2 gallon kit

Description

TotalBoat 6 Lb. density 2-Part Polyurethane Flotation Foam is a versatile, fast-setting expanding foam that cures rigid and strong, making it ideal for a number of structural and artistic applications, It's more than just a flotation foam for boats - use it for filling cavities to support heavy loads, casting, sculpting, making plugs for fiberglass molds, creating floating decoys, fabricating stage and stunt props and much more. This versatile foam can be finished and painted, once cured, and is very easy to cut or carve into shape. Cured marine foam is also compatible with epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester coatings. TotalBoat two part foam has a simple 1:1 mix ratio that makes it very easy to use, and it cures quickly at room temperature. Always have good ventilation, and wear proper gloves, eye, and clothing protection when you mix or pour foam. Warm conditions of 75-85°F are extremely critical for it to expand properly, as are accurate measuring and thorough mixing. Boat foam expands tremendously by volume, so proper venting is critical in the area where the foam is to be applied. Just mix one part resin and one part activator together, stir vigorously for about 25 seconds, pour immediately into the prepared cavity or mold, and leave undisturbed until cured. The foam hardens, with minimal shrinkage, and can be cut or carved to shape easily. For best results filling larger areas, pour in multiple layers to allow a proper cure and maximum strength bonding between layers. If consecutive pours are not possible, the polyurethane foam will still cure mechanically to itself. Compare to US Composites Expanding Urethane Foam, Fibre Glast Mix and Pour Foam, AeroMarine Pour Foam, and Iso-Pak IsoFoam. TotalBoat 2 Part Marine Foam sets up quickly, and has high compressive strength. All TotalBoat products are developed for boaters, by boaters. We know what works and what doesn't. 100% made in the USA.

  • Foams up surprisingly quickly
Size Name: 2 Quart Kit
This was the first time that I had used a 2-part foaming agent. Mixed up in a 1-to-1 ratio, it started foaming about 5 seconds after mixing in 80+ degree weather. (I glanced away for under a second, then glanced back and it had quickly started foaming in the mixing cup.) It's a good idea to mix small quantities at a time. I also learned the hard way that the foam in liquid form will get through any open cracks in the work area. This is definitely different from the spray on foam which I am used to. (I have been cleaning areas where I didn't intend the foam to go.) Also, it seems to bond to just about anything as it dries. The texture of this foam seems to have many more air bubbles than spray-on foam. This has been a learning experience for me while working on my boat. Question: Would I use this again? I am not sure. I am inclined not to. This is simply because of my lack of knowledge in using this product. ... show more

  • Foam structure is highly dependent on how you prep it
Size Name: 2 Quart Kit
I'm not actually using this foam for it's intended purpose. The mechanical properties of the foam are all I cared about. I ran some tests to see if the foam was strong enough and consistent enough for my purposes. What I found was... it can be. This will get a bit long, so you can move on if you're not interested in the structure and or mechanical properties of the foam. I can't imagine any of this would matter if you're actually going to pour this into the hull of a boat. Prep - mix very very well. It's stated clearly in the instructions that it should be mixed until there are no more streaks. Well, the difference is huge between well mixed and partially mixed product. No photos for this one, just follow the directions. Controlling for structure - The initial bubbles are always small, consistent, and tight. If your pour puts in enough material that it will have to grow vertically more than ~3 inches, that tight structure will vanish and you will get large irregular bubbles. I think this happens because the new bubbles are created at the bottom and must force their way upwards, which causes them to join with previous bubbles and create larger voids. I cross-sectioned two samples that I did in toilet paper tubes. One grew up through the tube, the other was capped on both ends and poured through a hole in the side of the tube so that it grew across the diameter of the tube (larger starting area, shorter height, same volume). You can clearly see that the sample with the shorter growing height has a much tighter and consistent structure. Strength - I used a mechanical test frame to calculate the crush strength of the foam. The crush strength is 550-600N (see chart image) while using a 3/4" diameter probe. That equates to roughly 74psi. If you have an irregular foam structure with larger voids (and thicker walls), it is actually 15-30% stronger, but it is much less predictable. ... show more

  • Wow! Easy to mix, makes tough hard foam
Size Name: 2 Quart Kit
Easy 1:1 mix. Read instructions, but for sure be ready to pour almost immediately. Expands at a somewhat surprising but manageable rate. Sets up hard! Not the fluffy can foam.

  • Inconsistent
Size Name: 2 Gallon Kit
I ordered four batches. Batch one worked perfectly. Batch two was mislabeled, one of the containers had a totally unrelated product label, but it worked perfectly. The third batch did not work. The product would look like it was going to work, bubble up, then the bubbles collapsed. That delivery looked damaged. One of the bottles was swollen before I even got started. I am waiting to receive my fourth batch. I expect it to work, hopefully it’s not mislabeled or damaged when it arrives. ... show more
