  • Maverick is one of the best looking 4k blurays I've seen and it's an excellent movie in general
Not all 4k blurays are created equally. There are some bad ones (Godzilla KotM) and some amazing ones (Tenet, Oppenheimer) and this is definitely one of the amazing ones. Also I love the movie. The story and acting is amazing. Impossible to not enjoy this movie and it's just awesome having fighter plane scenes at such high quality. I've been playing a lot of Ace Combat 7 so I decided to finally get this when I saw it on sale. The first movie is great and inspired a generation to join the airforce or at least see being a fighter pilot as a dream job (as I still do) but I've always felt that the romance angle bogs it down and kind of ruins the pacing. It's one of the opinions I had as a kid that I still agree with. I think they put that in just so women would have a reason to go see it because obviously the fighter pilot stuff is more of a guy thing but Top Gun Maverick showed how you can make it for everyone and never over did anything and focused on what you should focus on (the story line, characters, and subject matter AKA awesome jet fighter scenes) Though I also think they were heavily limited by technology and access to these amazing machines when they made the first one so that is another reason they spent a little too much time on the romance stuff. That's also why the first movie is a lot less accurate to real life than Maverick is (if you want to see great videos made by a retired fighter pilot covering how believable each are, I think the video on youtube is called "mover ruins top gun/top gun maverick" or something like that. he doesn't actually ruin the movies though, he just points out accuracies and inaccuracies) Though I'd also say you don't need a video to tell you how ridiculous the first scene of Maverick is LMAO the idea of surviving a plane breaking up at mach 10 is utterly hilarious. You don't just have to suspend disbelief but remove it from your mind permanently to get through that scene LOL ... show more

  • One of the best movies ever made
Flawless execution creates a masterpiece of filmmaking. Everything about this film works perfectly, and the different facets of artifice interlock together perfectly and their synergy produces a whole that is much more than the sum of its parts. This includes the acting, with particular distinction of Cruise in carrying the lead effortlessly, and honorable mentions to Miles Teller, Jennifer Connolly, Val Kilmer, and Glen Powell. It includes the score which blends in themes from the first movie while creating something new and engaging around the leitmotif of Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand”, which itself is sprinkled judiciously and is so well integrated almost like incidental music that when viewers hear the full song for the first time at the end of the movie it’s a revelation. The script is top notch, with excellent pacing and blending action and expertly deployed doses of humor, while hitting all the right beats along the way, and while some critics have complained that the unnamed enemy injures the verisimilitude, this is but a quibble, as the sense of realism is light years beyond any other blockbuster of this scale (I’m looking at you, MCU!). The technical aspects of the production are of course groundbreaking, with custom cameras and lenses and painstakingly choreographed aerial sequences blended with subtle and realistic special effects, to a custom-built model aircraft, and a cinematographic touch that ranges from golden sun-drenched palettes that evoke some sense of the original Tony Scott atmospherics, to crisp combination shots with actor closeups fronting mid-distance action against rolling landscapes in the background. Tom Cruise’s deep experience as a pilot enables him to convey an authenticity in the cockpit that stands out even amidst the sweat and heat from his helmet during the actual Gs being pulled in actual F/A-18s. But the secret weapon of the film may be its emotional punch, which travels far beyond simple nostalgia and comprises many of the core themes of the human condition, from aging both in your profession and in life, lasting friendships, regret, loss, parenting, and yes, mortality. Grown men will shed a tear at multiple points. We care about Maverick, and sympathize with his situation as he deals with significant losses, and as he finally realizes what he needs to hold tight to. Finally, it must be said that these are the best scenes of flying ever captured on film. The tour de force climax of the movie leaves viewers emotionally exhausted with giant grins and cheering for more. It ranks up there with the best action sequences in all of film. As for the 4K Blu-ray edition: The packaging is standard. The disc has a clean, dynamic, fresh-looking menu and 80 minutes of extras, including the music videos for the two new songs (Hold My Hand”, “I Ain’t Worried”), vignettes about the development of the story, the cinematography, the actor preparation, and an extended interview with Cruise at Cannes. Watching the 4K version at home even on a large screen is not like seeing this film on the big screen, where it is a quintessential movie-going experience. Nevertheless, the colors are good and the landscapes and other outdoor scenes are gorgeous. Can’t recommend this movie too highly. This is the apotheosis of what big screen cinema can be. The creative team behind this one has honed their craft and delivered possibly the best sequel ever made. ... show more
