  • Well done by a master!
I've studied with Tony Trischka years ago. A great teacher and very inspirational. As a bonus, he's a super guy. Many of these tabs come from years of Tony's exacting studies of many different players, including many of the early melodic players who preceded pickers who often get the lions share of credit for bringing about melodic style playing; for example Bill Keith and Bobby Thompson (note: neither of these players ever tried to take the credit for this). Several things I love about this collection including the fact that it's spiral bound and that makes page flipping a breeze. The tabs are large and clear. The song styles are broken into different genres such as 'Irish' etc. Two CDs featuring the playing of Tony make this a no-brainer for the intermediate to above player. ... show more

  • a powerful collection and value
this is the best value and collection of well tabbed banjo music in one volume that i have found in 30 years. i reluctantly paid $35 (2013) and it is well worth every penny twice over. it is obviously put together with heart and quality, and has a very brief but interesting description of each song's history and playing style. if you have played for a while, you probably already play some of these songs BUT it is worth the price alone to see some amazing and brilliant tabs on these old favorites. there are also a ton of songs id either never heard of, or hadn't heard of in years. it has an amazing amount of content and is a BIG book. it has some very basic stuff (which sounds fantastic) and tons also for the "lifer". i have used this book for countless hours and have not even tried the cds. that is how nicely this book is tabbed. i promise, i dont work for Trischka but this may be the best banjo tab compilation that exists! many (most) tab books seem cold and difficult to follow. this book is warm, inviting, easy to read, and obviously put together by someone who truly understands and loves the banjo. bravo oliver mullins; johnstown, colorado ... show more

  • Awesome book for intermediate banjo playing
A phenomenal find. I've been learning from a couple of different sources, but principally sticking to the Scruggs book. I had a few tunes from another book to begin working on melodic/single string. This book has been a great resource to work on my melodic/single style technique while learning some really beautiful tunes. Scruggs style is great, but these tunes are really opening my mind to what's possible on the banjo. The included audio is a pleasure. Trischka's playing has so much more nuance than the tabs can capture and has been a great resource. ... show more

  • Fiddle Tunes galore
Tony has collected most of the more common fiddle tunes, and some obscure ones, and presented melodic arrangements that are both attractive and, for the most part, accessible to the intermediate player. The physical presentation is excellent. The tabulature is clear, and (one of my key considerations) the book is spiral bound, which means it lies flat without having to break the binding. This is not a book for beginners. It is not intended to be. But, if nothing else, it is a good reference book when somebody at a jam calls a fiddle tune that you have never heard before. ... show more

  • Trishka Banjo Training
This book will really help me do a banjo "deep dive" into fiddle toons.

  • Great for the Advanced player
While not for the beginner, This book is a "must have" for any serious banjo picker. Intermediate pickers can learn new techniques, and even advanced players can benefit from this tome and 2 CDs. As before stated. Spiral bound and stands up on any page. You need to know how to read tab and have some basic experience in Scruggs, melodic, and single string to grasp it all. If it is too deep for you now, it will come in handy as you progress. I have ALL the 5 string banjo books available from 30+ years ago to today, even the original Scruggs book, and Tony's older instruction books... This is a Jewel!!!!! 5 stars for sure, and I have never met Tony. Regards,Terry ... show more

  • Love this book but wish it had a more durable cover
love the book, love the mp3 files online. i'm really a beginner so this will last me a long time. however, i can see the cover not lasting very long. maybe i'll cover it in something., wish it was more cardboard like..but great to have a spiral binding, an amazing selection of tunes. in any case, worth it!!! ... show more

  • Disappointed with Errors
I recently dived into this book and was disappointed to discover errors among the first few tunes including a tab error in Fiddler’s Hoedown and a text error in Big Sciota. Hope the rest of the book reflects more careful editing.
