Timex Group B.V. is one of the best-known American watch companies. Timex's U.S. headquarters are located in Middlebury Connecticut and it has substantial operations in China, the Philippines and India and full scale sales companies in Canada, the UK, France and Mexico. The company began in 1854 as Waterbury Clock in Connecticut's Naugatuck Valley, known during the nineteenth century as the "Switzerland of America." Sister company Waterbury Watch manufactured the first inexpensive mechanical pocket watch in 1880. During World War I, Waterbury began making wristwatches, which had only just become popular, and in 1933 it made history by creating the first Mickey Mouse clock under license from Walt Disney, with Mickey's hands pointing the time.During World War II, Waterbury renamed itself U.S. Time Company. In 1950 the company introduced a wristwatch called the Timex. Over the next three decades, Timex was sold through a series of advertisements which emphasized its durability by putting the watch through "torture tests," such as falling over the Grand Coulee Dam or being strapped to the propeller of an outboard motor, with the slogan "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking." With the help of former Olympic broadcaster, spokesman John Cameron Swayze, sales took off. The company later became Timex Corporation, then Timex Group and, to date, has sold over one billion watches. The company has remained very competitive and the Timex brand continues its dominance through present day. Its primary market remains the United States and Canada, although the Timex brand is sold worldwide due to its ability to capitalize on its strong brand image and reputation for quality. One of the most successful and important features available on many Timex watches is the Indiglo backlight system. Indiglo is a brand name of Indiglo Corporation, solely owned by Timex for licensing purposes. Timex electroluminescent lamps, branded Indiglo, were introduced in 1992 in the Ironman watch line. They were an immediate success. The Indiglo lamp uniformly lights the surface of the Timex’s watch dials in a manner that makes the dial read very easily in many different light settings. In some newer watches the Indiglo backlight only lights up the numbers, rather than the entire LCD display, which is achieved by means of a specialized film that inverts the LCD transmissivity.Today, Timex Group products are manufactured in the Far East and in Switzerland often based on technology that continues to be developed in the United States and in Germany. With a large and varied line of watches, Timex has the style for everyone. From the locker room to the board room, there is a great Timex style time-piece for you. P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); Get off the grid and embark on an adventure. • Great outdoor/medical watch
Update, 2 years later: Still in love with this watch. Until this weekend, no scratches of the face. I was teaching an National Cave Rescue Commission Orientation to Cave Rescue class this past weekend, and when in the cave, one of the students who was supposed to be doing vital signs didn't have a watch so I loaned him mine. Unfortunately, I got separated from him and he wore it during the carryout, and unlike me didn't have cuffs that closed over the watch, so it got a few scratches. Nothing all that severe, and I guess this is about as bad a test as you can have of a watch face's durability, but I've decided to keep the existing one for rougher use and get a new one for everyday wear. I just got this to replace a 15-20 year old Timex Expedition watch that was supposed to be 100m water resistant but died after diving to just 5 meters. At first I chalked this up to seals getting old, but then I also realized that when I had the battery replaced, the watch place said that this would damage the waterproofing. There is no reason for a digital watch to be round, I thought (my old one was) so why not get a rectangular one? I wear a Time Expedition as my everyday watch unless I have to dress up. And "everyday" for me includes clearing trails, disaster response, and mountain and cave rescue. The important good things about this watch, to me, are as follows. (1) Easy to read in bad conditions (or if you have poor eyesight). From top to bottom this is the same size as a normal round watch, but it's half again as wide. The numbers are half again as big as on a round digital watch. The Indiglo makes it easy to see at night (press the center right small button to make it light up for a second or so). (2) Easy to set. Timex "Easy-Set" means no need for any manual. All four buttons are clearly labeled; just press and hold Set (top left) to get into Set Mode and just follow the instructions. (3) Comfortable on the wrist. I have small bones, and even on my wrist, this big watch is comfortable. For my old round Timex Expedition, I traded in the OEM wrist band for a nylon one. This has a great band on it. It's soft, wide (which means comfortable) and quite secure. It seems pretty tough. It has a free loop (free ring) that has a little tooth in it that will stick into one of the same holes that the buckle tongue goes into. This means you can slide it to the end of the strap and it will stay right there. Brilliant design! (4) The top left has a sort of digital second hand... enough to count in 15- or 30-second intervals for checking a pulse or respirations. (I'm a physician so that's important to me.) If there is anything to not like about this watch, there are two things that concern me. First, the crystal is acrylic (thanks to those who replied to my question about this) and easier to scratch than a "mineral glass" crystal. (I've yet to see a "vegetable glass" crystal, but an "animal glass" crystal of Gorilla Glass would be ideal.) Second, when I've taken similar watches to a local watch place to get a new battery put in, they say that it's not waterproof any more. I wonder if it would be worth it to send it back for a new crystal and new battery when the battery dies, or if it would be cheaper to just get a new watch. Addendum: I asked about keeping water resistance after changing the battery, and two people answered "take it to a jeweler" but after browsing online comments about this option, I disagree. When my battery dies, I emal [email protected] or call 1-800-448-4639 to send it back to Timex. I would like the seals to be replaced if damaged so it stays waterproof, and local jewelers don't have access to the seals for unusual watches like this. ... show more

  • I love this watch although the light quit at some point.
I like everything about the watch except the light quit at some point. I don't recall when but I haven't changed the battery yet and I've had it for about 5 years. Maybe the light will work again if I change the battery. I recall the light was really good and easy to turn on. I don't think it is possible to use a different band, although the band is durable, secure and comfortable. I like that I can read it easily without squinting or using my glasses - the main reason I bought it. It is low profile and doesn't get caught up and snag on anything. I wear it in the water all the time without worry. I have not used it scuba diving, so I cannot attest to its depth rating. I'll likely purchase this watch again. ... show more

  • Versatile sports-type watch that fits any wrist comfortably
Replaced a full-sized Ironman with this watch. Very, very pleased with it. My wrists are 6 1/2 inches, and I need to wear it snugly enough so that it doesn't move around. Wearing an Ironman that way was very uncomfortable; if the sharp edge of the buckle didn't attack me, the hard resin strap did. The buckle and strap on this watch wear much more comfortably. With holes from one end of the strap to the other it will fit any wrist except maybe Paul Bunyan's. My arms are also fairly long, and the big, oblong case is much better proportioned for such an arm than must other watches. It looks like it was designed for my arm. The watch itself is very easy to read and use, once you get used to it. Vibrator alerts and alarms and the Hydra tool, which acts as a second timer up to 60 minutes, are handy extras. The illuminator lights the characters rather than the backdrop, so that's a slight minus. Also unlike an Ironman, there is no button on the face, and the side buttons are almost flush with the sides of the case. That may be a minus for some people, but I don't use them that much. With no button on the face, I can wear it on the inside of my wrist, which I not only prefer but is also a consideration against the watch's only failing. That would be the design of the ace and crystal. Other reviewers have gone into it being glass that can be scuffed, scratched or broken. Besides that, it's almost flush with the case material that surrounds it rather than being recessed like on an Ironman. Other users suggested modifying a phone screen protector to fit it; not easily done anymore, as the ones easily available are glass that can't be cut. There are plastic film protectors that can be cut to fit, but the same klutziness that I could see bashing the crystal into something if the watch were on the outside of my wrist raises red flags about trying that. ... show more

  • Great watch
Great watch with large readout. The second one I’ve purchased. Last one the band broke and I could find a replacement band - watch still works. Cost a little more than most timex watches but I wear it daily.

  • A good watch, But
The watch was working just out of the box, and if you ever owned similar Timex watches it sets up just like all of the others. One big problem. The watch band can't be changed. It may have been somewhere in fine print, but I didn't see it. I don't like these resin watch bands and always change it. I won't buy one like this one again. I will buy a very less expensive one. ... show more
