These are the only pencils I’ve purchased for many years. My most recent batch is very different. Softer, lighter wood. Softer lead. Doesn’t sharpen well. Now rationing my last few good ones. Photo exhibits old (good) pencil on the left, new (disappointing) pencil on the right.

    • How is Ticonderoga still in business?? World's WORST pencils!!

First, the pencils you see photographed are not the ones you will receive. The photo of the product that I purchased shows a medal on the front reading "100% American Cedar Wood." The package I got has a little medal saying "Celebrating Over 100 Years of Excellence." The number 100 is emphasized to fool people!! Lower down it says "Premium Wood." Further down, you find that these pencils are made in China. The pencil I tried didn't sharpen correctly--a problem I noted a few years ago when I stopped buying this brand of cheap pencil--they sharpen very roughly and unevenly. However, the lead seems to be fine--it holds a tip and writes fine. The eraser is okay. Anyway, I was giving Ticonderoga one more chance--hoping that their slightly more expensive pencils would be as good as their pencils used to be. If you're looking for a moderately priced pencil, I recommend Write Dudes USA Gold cedar pencils. ... show more

So, I am nowhere near a pencil snob but I like my pencils dark and with a little grit and sturdy. These Ticonderoga Black pencils are a little gritty, sturdy, but writes a little too light for me. I pictured other pencils I have so you can see what I mean. The top is the Ticonderoga at .23/pencil. The second is some cheap 15 cent Walmart pencil, and the last Is Staetdler at .25/pencil. While these are the worst out of my pencils, it’ll be an okay everyday pencil for my desk and in case anyone in my family needs one too. I hope this helps! ... show more

Ticonderoga used to make excellent, sturdy pencils. I have tried two different types recently and both have been very poor quality. The lead breaks after being sharpened, almost immediately. Upon close examination the pencil shows two very different types of wood have been used to make each pencil and on the seam where they join, it appears to create a weakness near the tip of the pencil as well as where the lead first emerges from the pencil. Add these pencils to the list of stuff I can no longer trust to get on Amazon. The pencils I received are not like the box pictured, they are missing the 100% American Cedar advert on the box, instead replaced with some "100 years of excellence" to mask the bait and switch. Says made in China on the bottom. Not sure if these are a plain old counterfeit item, or if they've just decided to not make them the same anymore. But the lead and wood definitely isn't the same as when I buy these in a real store. Buyer beware! And they were cheap enough that it's not worth the hassle of getting a refund.. instead I'll just share my negative experience. ... show more

Honestly, I usually buy these at Walmart but I think they are cheaper in here and save me a trip! I actually fell in love with this pencils 8 years ago and I've been loyal to them since, they're great for any use you could ever need a pencil for but i use them to sketch out idea before transferring them to my final paper and the eraser is fantastic (which is a big reason I love them) the graphite almost never breaks one of the most durable pencils ove ever owned but they still have that smooth buttery consistency on paper I love and dream of ♡ my husband always goes for the cheapest pencil he can find and he always tries to snag these from me lol so we are in agreement! ... show more

I spent extra money for these because I love this brand. I was surprised the pencils I got were crap! They were not even in the box when I got them and one was missing. The erasers are stale and they are much thinner than ones I've had in the past (last semester) . Maybe I got a dud box?

True story: BEST PENCILS OF ALL TIME!! Yup, apparently there’s a difference, and you’ll see the difference with these bad boys! At the risk of sounding like a nerd, totally worth the hype y’all!
